The Role Of Dialect Words In Children’S Social Decisions, Madison Rose Myers-Burg
The Role Of Dialect Words In Children’S Social Decisions, Madison Rose Myers-Burg
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Recent research suggests that young children are capable of distinguishing between phonetically dissimilar spoken accents, yet have difficulty distinguishing between phonetically similar accents (Wagner, Clopper, & Pate, 2013). The present study aimed to determine whether the presence of dialect-specific vocabulary enhances young children’s ability to categorize speakers. Participants completed four training trials in which they were familiarized with photos of two children: one of whom used American English labels for test objects and one of whom used British English labels. After training trials, participants completed eight test trials in which they were asked to infer which target child would use …

How Does The Language Used In Literacy Coaching Conversations Impact Teacher Self-Efficacy?, Nicole Cahill
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations
This action research study explored the language used by the researcher during literacy coaching sessions with six elementary school teachers. The research question addressed in this capstone is, how does the language used in literacy coaching conversations impact teacher self-efficacy? The author reviewed relevant research regarding self-efficacy, the components of effective coaching conversations, and a social constructivist view of language. Key findings from the literature review were used to develop a list of language prompts in order to increase teacher self-efficacy during coaching dialogues. Each research participant engaged in an individual coaching cycle that included a modeling session, two sessions …

How Language Policies And Practices Affect Classrooms In Schools And Colleges, Gwendolyn F. Stanley
How Language Policies And Practices Affect Classrooms In Schools And Colleges, Gwendolyn F. Stanley
Master's Theses
To understand the origin of this documentation pertaining to How Language Policies and Practices Affect Classrooms in Schools and Colleges goes all the way back in time to the 1800s. The year of 1890 was the time, when the so-called minority generation in the United States came to realize that, injustice was going to be at a standstill unless some action would take place. This country was set on uncertain written standards that were bound to have been noted as constitutional. The constitution says this, and the constitution states that, “While the 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution …
Breaking The Language Barrier: Equitable Assessment In General Chemistry, Eshani Lee
Breaking The Language Barrier: Equitable Assessment In General Chemistry, Eshani Lee
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Because language provides the framework through which knowledge is constructed, it is crucial to consider the ways in which students with limited English proficiencies are able to express their understanding. English language learners (ELLs) make up a significant portion of the student body in the education system and represent many ethnic and racial minorities in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) fields (Burke & Mattis, 2007). Despite the national push to build a more diversified, STEM-ready workforce, there is little research that considers the way ELLs are assessed in STEM courses at the postsecondary level. Literature reports that science tests …

The Application Of The Specific Learning Disability Exclusionary Clause As Practiced By Virginia School Psychologists, Kaitlynn Carter
Educational Specialist, 2009-2019
When special education eligibility is being determined under Specific Learning Disability, the exclusionary clause needs to be carefully considered. The current study was concerned with the exclusions of cultural factors, environmental or economic disadvantage, and limited English proficiency. The study used a semi-structured interview to explore when and how the exclusionary clause is considered by school psychologists in Virginia and what type of impact it has on eligibility decisions. Ten school psychologists were contacted via the email database of the Virginia Department of Education and completed a phone interview. Grounded theory was used to investigate the themes and ideas regarding …

Values, Mushfaking, And Literacy In Disability: Applying James Paul Gee’S Discourse Theory To The Deaf And Mental Health Communities, Adrienne Griffiths
Values, Mushfaking, And Literacy In Disability: Applying James Paul Gee’S Discourse Theory To The Deaf And Mental Health Communities, Adrienne Griffiths
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
The disability community has been a historically marginalized group and continues to be. Many advocates for inclusive language feel uncomfortable around the disability community because they are uncertain how to act and speak. There are two forms of language syntaxes that people primarily use to refer to someone with a disability: People-first language and Identity-first language. People-first language identifies someone first, then refers to their disability, such as “person with autism.” The second framework, Identity-first language, includes referring to someone’s disability first, then by another attribute. In other words, “autistic person.”
Both forms of language syntaxes have many reasons as …
How Do We Teach All Students In Monolingual Classrooms? A Study Of Transfer And Translingualism, Norma Denae Dibrell
How Do We Teach All Students In Monolingual Classrooms? A Study Of Transfer And Translingualism, Norma Denae Dibrell
Theses and Dissertations
I take the work of Lorimer and Nowacek in “Transfer and Translingualism,” as a starting point to address these questions. In “Transfer and Translingualism” they argue that transfer and translingualism “both index movement among contexts, practices, or meaning” while “neither suggests a neutral carrying over of knowledge from one context or language to another” (260) and thus acknowledge prior knowledge and prior experience. Lorimer and Nowacek call for transfer researchers to look at language diversity “beyond recognition of difference to the matrices of power that regulate that difference” and to ask questions about how to measure transfer (261-262). Consequently, in …

Friendship And Language: How Kindergarteners Talk About Making Friends In A Two-Way Immersion School, Sionelle Nicole Beller
Theses and Dissertations
Research on adolescents sense of belonging in schools is plentiful; however, there is an obvious lack of research conducted in early childhood years. Friendship groups have been shown to be impactful in helping students feel like they belong in school. This study explores how kindergarteners talk about friendship in the context of belonging in a two-way immersion school. I pay particular attention to the role primary language plays in developing a sense of belonging and friendships at school. The 19 kindergarteners in this study were interviewed in small linguistically homogenous groups of 2 or 3 students. Each focus group was …

Les Femmes Et L'Éducation Dans Le Théâtre Du Grand Siècle:, Hayley E. Jayson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to conduct a thorough examination of the current literature related to the background, benefit and implementation of play in teaching social skills to children with autism spectrum disorders. The ability to demonstrate joint attention, demonstrate join attention and participate in functional and pretend play continues to show a correlation with children’s language, cognitive and social skills. Functional and symbolic play provide children an opportunity to practice new vocabulary, experiment with scenarios they have observed, and have social interaction. Children with autism spectrum disorders do not develop these skills easily and naturally as their typically-developing …
¿Puedes Anagramar?: A Game That Helps Heritage Speakers Master Spanish Accentuation, José Alexander Iii
¿Puedes Anagramar?: A Game That Helps Heritage Speakers Master Spanish Accentuation, José Alexander Iii
Senior Projects Spring 2018
Sometimes the best way to learn a new topic isn’t through traditional means but by way of a game. Research has shown that games are especially helpful for learning a new language. Spanish heritage speakers grow up “knowing” Spanish, but do not have full oral or written fluency. The purpose of this project is to create a game that aids Spanish heritage speakers in understanding the rules of accent placement. Heritage speakers grow up in a home where Spanish is spoken, and are bilingual (English/Spanish) with respect to comprehension. The skill level of each heritage speaker varies but a number …

Relationship Between English Proficiency And Academic Achievement Of Nigerian Secondary School Students, Goldlyn Ugonna Ozowuba
Relationship Between English Proficiency And Academic Achievement Of Nigerian Secondary School Students, Goldlyn Ugonna Ozowuba
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Nigerian stakeholders are concerned with the continuous low scores of final-year senior secondary school students (FYSSS) in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). Studies have shown that limited proficiency in English among FYSSS is the cause of low scores on the WASSCE. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to investigate the relationship between English proficiency and academic achievement among FYSSS as measured by the WASSCE. The theoretical framework for the study was Cummins's theory of second language acquisition to address the distinction between conversational language and academic language. Archival data from 225 FYSSS were collected from …
