Students On The Edge: Evaluating An Academic Support Group, Benjamin P. Heinisch, Nicole M. Smith
Students On The Edge: Evaluating An Academic Support Group, Benjamin P. Heinisch, Nicole M. Smith
The Nebraska Educator: A Student-Led Journal
This qualitative case study evaluated the effectiveness of the Academic Skills Discussion Group, a new retention intervention targeting undergraduate students on academic probation. This intervention utilized a support group structure to provide social and academic supports to academically-poor students. These supports incorporated didactic educational presentations and interpersonal discussions relating to life change and college expectations. The case comprised one pilot administration of the intervention for three student group members. Data was collected from pre/post-intervention resiliency surveys, grade point average comparisons, journal-entry analysis and semi-structured exit interviews. The researcher conducted inductive data analysis by coding participant statements for meaning, calculating and …
The History Books Tell It? Collective Bargaining In Higher Education In The 1940s, William A. Herbert
The History Books Tell It? Collective Bargaining In Higher Education In The 1940s, William A. Herbert
Publications and Research
This article presents a history of collective bargaining in higher education during and just after World War II, decades before the establishment of applicable statutory frameworks for labor representation. It examines the collective bargaining program adopted by the University of Illinois in 1945, along with contracts negotiated at other institutions. The article also examines the role of United Public Workers of America (UPWA) and its predecessor unions in organizing and negotiating on behalf of faculty, teachers, and instructors. The first known collective agreements applicable to faculty, teachers and instructors, were negotiated by those unions before UPWA was destroyed during the …

Barriers To Higher Education: Underrepresented Minorities' Access To Uci, Kimberly Dennin
Pell Scholars and Senior Theses
Ever since the removal of Affirmative Action in California from Proposition 209, the UC system has struggled with increasing the enrollment numbers of underrepresented minorities on their campuses. In response to this, many of the UC schools are adopting different policies to help counteract the negative effects of Proposition 209. This paper examines the effects of Proposition 209 on the underrepresented minority population in the UC system, specifically focusing on the University of California, Irvine (UCI). The areas of focus for addressing the issues of Proposition 209 at UCI are outreach programs, admissions policies, and recruitment programs. This paper examines …

Olivet Nazarene University Academic Advising Assessment: Phase One, Sue Rattin
Scholarship – Academic Affairs Office
Retaining college students has emerged as a top priority for colleges and university administrators; therefore, post-secondary institutions have invested heavily in student success initiatives. Unfortunately colleges and universities fail to view academic advising as key to student success. The comprehensive academic advising assessment at ONU identified key stakeholders and collected information related to the nature and scope of advising sessions, evaluations of academic advisors and student advisor satisfaction with advising activities. Results from the academic advising assessment suggested that Olivet administrators should develop a comprehensive advising program consistent with the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS) …

Why Not Us? Counselor To Professor To Chair, Janna L. Scarborough
ETSU Faculty Works
Academia is facing a shortage of administrators. Because the foundation of counseling is in its counselor education prep programs, the future of counseling is impacted by issues in higher education. Counselor educators have an opportunity to make a broad systemic impact on the future of the counseling profession through success as a leader in higher education institutions. We will examine the characteristics, knowledge, and skills of counselors against those of successful department chairs.

The Relentless Pursuit Of University Rankings Is Creating A Two-Track System, Eng Fong Pang, Linda Lim
The Relentless Pursuit Of University Rankings Is Creating A Two-Track System, Eng Fong Pang, Linda Lim
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Global university rankings constructed mainly by Western commercial media outlets, like this week’s Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Asia University Rankings, seem to be a perennial sourceof interest in Singapore.Yet, rankings have well-known limitations. The Ministry of Education (MOE) and university leaders frequently deny that they motivate policy orare a basis for institutional evaluation. But they do provide a convenient way to ascertain ifuniversities meet our aspirations for world-class status. At the same time, because rankings tend to emphasise research publications of global significance, there is some skepticism among academics and the general public everywhere of their value to localcommunities.
A Rationale For Requiring Philosophy Of Education In Preservice Teacher Programs, Jeffrey Labelle, Gabrielle Belknap
A Rationale For Requiring Philosophy Of Education In Preservice Teacher Programs, Jeffrey Labelle, Gabrielle Belknap
College of Education Faculty Research and Publications
To develop a rationale for requiring a free-standing philosophy of education course in preservice teacher programs, the researchers reviewed prior literature to construct a framework to establish such a requirement. A review of required course content in non-Catholic (private and public) colleges and universities with preservice teacher programs in five Midwestern states in the United States revealed that most do not require such a course, hence the need for programs to reconsider how licensure candidates develop their teaching philosophies and review program articulation and course content. This study proposes a fourfold theoretical rationale for requiring philosophy of education of preservice …

In 1969, President Richard Nixon formally declared
a “war on drugs” that would be directed to combat the
use of illicit drugs in the U.S. This and other “wars,”
such as the “war on gangs” or “war on cancer” have
come to signify major efforts by the federal government
against something they perceive as a threat.
In past articles in this column I have written about
concerted efforts by some groups and conservative
media to diminish funding for higher education, defame
college education as a passport to better standards
of living, portray colleges and universities as “liberal
nests” out of …

Donald J. Trump has a degree from an Ivy League university—my alma mater, in fact—but he is not one of the Ivies’ admirers. “We must embrace new and effective job-training approaches, including online courses, high school curricula, and private-sector investment that prepare people for trade, manufacturing, technology and other really well-paying jobs and careers,” the president declared in March. “These kinds of options can be a positive alternative to a four-year degree.”
If ever an issue seemed assured of bipartisan support, you’d think it would be an initiative that helps connect workers with work. But up went the howls of …

The importance of leadership in this shift from a theoretical plan to actual implementation cannot be underestimated. Change agents from a variety of institutional types—community college, public institution, and private institution—will discuss strategies used to inspire and guide others toward the achievement of shared objectives while managing institutional complexities. You will learn about issues leaders must successfully address to implement a meaningful strategic planning process.

During the last few years, media have inundated us with bad news about higher education. Whether it is student debt, sexual assaults, or decreased enrollments, colleges and universities seem to be under siege. Add to that the bad press from op-ed writers about political correctness, uselessness of certain degrees, and the fascination with techno- logical fads such as MOOCs, and one can see how controversial higher education has become.
Apparently, someone forgot to ask students what they think.
Now a new national study seems to take care of that. According to a survey conducted with Gallup and Strada Educational Network …

The goal of this effort is to make plain any overlap between Post-Secondary Mechanical Technician Standards and Plumbing Apprenticeship Curriculum Standards. We'll investigate whether the overlap is significant enough to create a modern and updated classroom learning template. Mechanical Technician programs are generally 56 weeks in length. A Plumbing Apprenticeship is significantly longer. The essential question is: What portion of Technician Education equates to the first 100 to 200 weeks of Apprenticeship Training. If enough meaningful and actionable overlaps do exist there may be opportunities to strengthen real-world-connections to in-school lectures and labs.
The two key Standards that will be …

This article explores the possible impact of lecture duration on the quality of teaching and learning in higher education. It does so based on the notion that human attention span has boundaries and limitations, therefore, the concern is: what is the best length of lecture duration for effective teaching and learning in higher education. Based on Capacity Theories of Attention and Bottleneck Attention theory which express that people have limited attention span as well as natural mental filter, this paper interrogates the three hours lecture duration per session as a risk factor that may impact on effective teaching and learning. …

Wolf, Lawmakers Shouldn't Cut Grants To Private Colleges, Janet M. Riggs
From the Desk of President Riggs
Earlier this week, students from private colleges and universities across the Commonwealth gathered in Harrisburg to meet with legislators and make the case for the importance of the state's commitment to higher education.
More specifically, for state grant programs that help to make college affordable for low- and moderate-income students and their families.
I have a keen interest in making sure that talented students of all income levels have the opportunity to attain a high quality education. [excerpt]

Beyond Greening: The Challenges To Adopting Sustainability In Higher Education., Catherine Hooey, Alicia Mason, James Triplett

It is common for colleges and universities to include sustainability in their mission statements and strategic plans. On many campuses, however, sustainability is associated with green practices only, rather than the comprehensive integration of social equity, economic, and environmental principles on which the concept was founded. Here, Hooey et al examine the obstacles to the comprehensive adoption of sustainability in institutions of higher education, in general, and to suggest a conceptual framework of a sustainability culture as one most appropriate for the more effective incorporation of comprehensive practices.
