Freemont graduated from the Maine State College of Agricultural and Mechanical Arts (now the University of Maine) as a member of the Class of 1885 and earned a Doctor of Veterinary Science at John Hopkins University. He served as professor of Bacteriology & Veterinary Science at the University of Maine from 1889-1932. The Nelson B. Jones Stein Collection is on display in the Oakes Room at Raymond H. Fogler Library. The theme of steins is inspired by the popularity of the Maine Stein song made famous by the singer Rudy Vallee.

In May of 1962, the Governing Board of the Memorial Union, with the urging of Nelson B. Jones, the first director of the Memorial Union, formally authorized the creation of the permanent stein collection, which in 1977 was renamed the Nelson B. Jones Stein Collection. The collection was originally housed in the Memorial Union before being relocated to Fogler Library.

The University of Maine saw approximately 1,000 students and alumni serve in World War I and 3,900 serve in World War II. Both wars had a strong effect on the university and its students; the desire to honor those who had served and to memorialize those who had died led to various activities on campus. After the end of World War I, funds were raised to erect the Memorial Gymnasium and Armory and after World War II, those who had died were honored in a volume titled "University of Maine, World War II: In Memoriam." James Norris Hart was dean emeritus of the University of Maine and professor emeritus of mathematics and astronomy. He was born in Willimantic, Maine, in 1861 and died in 1959. He received a B.C.E. degree from the Maine State College in 1885 and a C.E. in 1890. In 1897 he earned a M.S. degree from the University of Chicago.

Hart was an instructor in mathematics at the University of Maine starting in 1887 and dean of the University in 1903. Hart was awarded for his service to the University of Maine with a degree of doctor of science in 1908. …

White, who would later be appointed associate provost and dean of the Division. The University of Maine Honors Program began in 1935 and transitioned into the Honors College in 2002. In 2002, the Honors College relocated from the original Robert Thomson Honors Center, constructed in 1975, to the newly renovated Center on the first floor of Colvin Hall. The Center had been named in honor of Robert B. Thomson in 1983. Thomson was the director of the Honors Program from 1962-1977. Howard Paul Segal was born on July 15, 1948, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He received a B.A. from Franklin & Marshall College and an M.A. and Ph.D. in History from Princeton University. Segal first came to the University of Maine in 1986 as an assistant professor of history and also the associate director of the Technology and Society Project in the College of Engineering. In 2020, Segal was awarded emeritus status by the University of Maine.

Following a pilot project in Aroostook County, Maine in 1992, the Maine Center for Student Journalism was established in 1993 to stimulate and assist the study and practice of journalism in Maine secondary schools. The Center provided students with an opportunity to work with, speak to, and learn from professionals in the field of journalism. The Center hosted an annual student journalism conference and regional roundtables that supported high school teachers and students journalism projects. The Center also organized an annual statewide newspaper conference and published a quarterly newsletter.

The University of Maine Department of Chemistry offers both undergraduate and graduate programs in chemistry, including a Ph.D. program, the establishment of which is documented in these records. The Department is housed in Aubert Hall which was constructed in 1914 and named in honor of the first University of Maine chemistry professor, Professor Albert Aubert, who came to the University of Maine in 1874, and departed in 1909.

Cecil John Reynolds (1903-1998) was born in Chelsea, Massachusetts. In 1927, he won a Rhodes Scholarship to attend Oxford University where he earned Bachelor of Arts and Literature degrees in 1930. In 1935, Reynolds began teaching at the University of Maine and in the 1940s, founded an English honors program.

Marie Christiansen Mengers was born in 1905 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and died in Orono, Maine. She was a professor of French at the University of Maine from 1947 until her death in 1965. Mengers was educated at the University of Nebraska, Wellesley College, Columbia University, and the University of Toulouse, France. She attended summer sessions at Harvard and Chicago Universities. Her doctoral dissertation was on the life of French symbolist poet Henri de Régnier. Before coming to UMaine, she taught at the University of Nebraska, the University of Wisconsin, and Queens College in Flushing, N.Y.

The Delta Kappa Gamma Society was founded on May 11, 1929, in Austin, Texas, by Dr. Annie Webb Blanton, with eleven other key women educators. Many new chapters in many states were formed in the following years.

In 1942, Nellie I. Gale, Grace Faulkingham Gilmore, Virginia D. Marston, Louise B. Miller, Carrie H. Rowe, and Dr. Edith M. Patch were initiated into Delta Kappa Gamma as National Members.
