In 2005, over 100,000 e-Learning courses were offered in over half of all U.S. postsecondary education institutions with nearly 90% of all community colleges and four year institutions offering online education. E-learning is gaining momentum throughout the world thanks to the widespread use of the web and the sophisticated course management systems that are affordable and available in other major languages besides English. The level of comfort with technology among young people and the expectations for wider access to higher education are factors that are forcing college dministrators to explore more opportunities to make courses available to students regardless of their proximity to campus. With more than 4.6 million people, mostly undergraduates, enrolling in at least one online course in fall of 2008, students are showing that they are comfortable with the concept of technology in education. Many students in online classes, however still have to deal with the high cost of textbooks and supplemental materials. Online technologies, however, can provide other alternatives to costly coursepacks and textbooks. Faculty and students may be able to replace or supplement coursepacks and textbooks with social bookmarking sites. This article provides a summary of the goals, processes, products, evaluation outcomes and lessons learnt from Learn@Work, a pan-European research project that involved four higher education providers and one private partner. The project aimed to develop and test online or personal computer (PC)-based materials for induction and support of worker-learners using pilots in the partner countries, as well as to generate usable case studies and theoretical models. Canada is characterised by a large geographic area, rugged terrain, and many rural communities whose schools cannot offer the same educational opportunities as their urban counterparts. The province of British Columbia exemplifi es this situation. Since 1919, British Columbia has embraced open and distance learning to provide education opportunities across the vast province. British Columbia now has over 50 public and independent (i.e., private) schools offering distributed learning to almost 60,000 students in primary and secondary education.

This study sought to explore if a relationship exists between cognitive load and student satisfaction with learning online. The study separates academic performance (a.k.a., 'learning') from cognitive load and satisfaction to better distinguish influences on cognition (from cognitive load) and motivation (from satisfaction). Considerations that remain critical to the field of instructional design, as they apply to learning online, were described and used to guide a review of the literature to find directions to fulfill the goal of this study.
