The purpose of this transcendental, phenomenological study was to explore experiences of using a total communication system with preschoolers diagnosed with autism as explained by their parents and teachers. The research focused on the experience specifically relating to functional communication and social interactions. Determining resources that parents and teachers need that may have made the employment of the strategies more successful, was of importance to this study in order to determine implications, or future needed research. Long Term Conditions (LTCs) are increasing in prevalence and cost in Western healthcare. Patients with such conditions are often classed as “disabled”, because of impacts of self-care on “activities of daily life” or secondary consequences of conditions (impairments) affecting factors such as mobility, concentration and communications. Disability needs are often ignored in the design of services and treatment of individuals. Recent Federal education reform and legislation (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, 1997, 2004; No Child Left Behind Act, 2001) have shifted to emphasize the inclusion of all students in mainstream social and academic settings within the public schools. Despite the shift towards inclusion and the benefits of peer interaction experiences, recent observational studies have revealed that, for students with disabilities, social interactions are often limited. This study evaluated the effect of a collaboratively developed, peer mediated intervention on the social communication of students with complex communication needs in inclusive classroom settings.
