Instructional Designers As Leaders In Professional Learning Communities: Catalysts For Transformative Change, Shari Smith
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal
When it comes to gifted and talented education, once a student has been identified as gifted, educators make it a priority to push them to higher levels of thinking. Higher thinking is one of the desires of these gifted students, however the emotional needs of gifted students can often be lost as they are driven to focus on their academic abilities (Johnson, 2001). Often times the assumption about gifted students is that they come from a two parent home and that they will make good grades no matter what. The following modified verbatim examples will show the impact of not …

Incorporating Case Studies Into An Undergraduate Genetics Course, Marlene Murray
Faculty Publications
Genetics is considered one of the most challenging courses in the biology curricula at both the secondary and post secondary levels. Case based teaching has been shown to improve student perception and performance outcomes in both non-science and science courses. Thus in an effort to improve outcomes, case studies were integrated into an undergraduate genetics course as a supplement to lecture and replacement to recitation. Student perception and performance when case studies were used was compared to two previous years before the incorporation of case studies. Student course evaluations, pre and post surveys of student knowledge, and exam scores indicated …

Participation, as a social and political movement, continues to gain momentum, and the legal and sociological frameworks supporting the rights of children and young people to participate in various aspects of social life are now well established. Yet, there are gaps and silences behind the rhetoric of participation that beg closer scrutiny. The current status of educational reform issues related to general education and special education provides the opportunity for the creation of a system that encompasses the goals of both groups in a cohesive manner. Previously, these issues have been addressed separately; however, recent research identifies a progression of change in the focus of ideas in both general education and special education. The first two phases of school reform focused initially on raising standards and then on teacher empowerment and site-based management. The current phase of school reform focuses on the instructional needs of the individual student and rejects the premise …

Student Problem Solving Communication Processes While Completing Multimedia Case Studies: A Look Into The Relationship Among Levels Of Collaboration, Problem Solving Processes, And Problem Solving Performance On Individual And Group Levels, Jan Elizabeth Broussard
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In an effort to better prepare students to become productive members of the work force, educators must grant students the opportunities to become critical thinkers. Students need to be able to learn to inquire, create, and think critically in order to obtain meaningful information from the abundance of knowledge that is accessible to them through the Internet and the World Wide Web. This quasi-experimental study examined the effects of online collaborative problem solving processes during a multimedia case study. Sixty-one students in two undergraduate management information systems classes agreed to participate. The experimental class, section 01, was required to use …
