African American College Students’ Perspectives Of Academic Challenges To Graduation, Bobby Calvin Luckett
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Even though the enrollment numbers of African American students are comparable to other racial/ethnic groups at a university in the midwestern United States, the problem investigated through this study was that African American students were graduating at a slower rate compared to other groups. The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions of African American university students about the academic challenges they faced as they worked towards graduation as well as their experiences with and suggestions to improve institutional support to meet these challenges. The study was based on Tinto’s retention theory. For this basic qualitative study, data …
Periodic Skills Education To Improve Competency In New Nurses, Karen Broomes-James
Periodic Skills Education To Improve Competency In New Nurses, Karen Broomes-James
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
On entry into the nursing profession, new graduate nurses (NGNs) possess some knowledge and skills competency but self-report learning gaps in various areas. Experienced nurses have reported that new nurses do not always have knowledge and competency in essential nursing skills. Undergraduate nursing programs and organization orientation programs provide valuable foundational knowledge but are sometimes limited in providing multiple exposures to content. Lagging skills acquisition contributes to self-doubt, lack of confidence and high attrition among NGNs. There is little data in the literature about the provision of supplemental education to new nurses immediately after orientation, and this doctor of nursing …

Perceptions Of Urban School Principals On Urban Teacher Retention, Latonya Stredic
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Researchers have indicated that principals can play a crucial role in motivating teachers to stay or leave. Using transformational leadership theory as a framework to address research questions, data were collected from semistructured interviews with 12 principals. Instructional Leadership Practices Of K-12 School Principals Regarding Teachers' Burnout, Lakeva Lajune Winchester
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Teachers who experience burnout leave the teaching profession. School principals in a public school district located in the southern United States are inconsistently implementing instructional leadership practices to support teachers who experience burnout. The purpose of this basic qualitative research study was to understand the instructional leadership practices of school principals regarding teachersâ burnout. The conceptual framework was Vygotskyâs theory of zone of proximal development, which posits that people are more motivated to learn when they are supported and encouraged and is based on Malcolm Knowlesâ theory of andragogy, known as the adult leaning theory. The research question considered how …

Newly Hired Teachers' Perspectives On Factors That Influence Their Attrition Or Retention, Deaneth A. Brown Taylor
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Newly hired teacher attrition has increased across the nation and is one of the main contributors to the current teacher shortage. This study specifically addressed a suburban school district located in the Mid-Atlantic region that had experienced a high rate of attrition of newly hired teachers (NHTs). This issue is important because NHT attrition affects school budgets and student achievement. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore the professional experiences of NHTs, and how those experiences contributed to their decisions to leave or remain employed. The conceptual framework that grounded this study was Ingersoll’s concept of teacher …
Media’S Influence On Secondary Teachers’ Perceptions Of Their Roles And Attrition, Sophronia D. Beckford
Media’S Influence On Secondary Teachers’ Perceptions Of Their Roles And Attrition, Sophronia D. Beckford
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Past researchers have argued that teacher attrition rates result from burnout, job dissatisfaction, and lack of support, but they have not explored the possibility of the media’s ability to influence the perception teachers have regarding their roles. The purpose of this study was to gain insight into whether the media influenced secondary teachers’ self-perceptions and attrition in a public high school in the Midwest. Social influence theory served as the theoretical framework. The research questions focused on how the media’s portrayal of educators in print and film influenced how teachers perceived themselves and teacher attrition. For this qualitative case study, …
