Young children with disabilities have better outcomes when their families and caregivers receive the necessary resources and supports to implement high quality practices. This session will set the framework for how adults learn and how they can learn to implement new practices and modify current ones to have the greatest impact on young children.
In this 90 minute interactive webinar session participants will:
- Discover a systematic way to develop and present new information to effect change in practice, whether in “coaching” sessions with families or professional development sessions with colleagues.
- Learn how to implement new practices or modify current practices …
Perspectives On Numeracy: Reflections From International Assessments, Dave Tout, Iddo Gal
Perspectives On Numeracy: Reflections From International Assessments, Dave Tout, Iddo Gal
David (Dave) Tout
This paper examines perspectives regarding the mathematical skills expected of adults and school graduates, comparing ideas developed as part of two major multinational comparative assessments of skills: the Programme for International Student Assessment and the Programme for International Assessment of Adult Competencies (also known as the OECD Survey of Adult Skills). The paper reflects on the conceptual and assessment frameworks developed for these two programmes, aiming to shed light on the commonalities and differences between the constructs of numeracy and mathematical literacy and to inform current debate about directions for developing mathematical skills in the 21st Century.

Apprentice retention and completion focus of new study
The completion rates of Ontario’s apprentices remain a point of concern, prompting growing interest in programs to improve retention and completion. A new study from the Higher Education Quality Council of Ontario examines the development, implementation and efficacy of the Apprentice Retention Program (ARP).
Project description
ARP was developed in a partnership with Western University, Fanshawe College, the local Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities’ (MTCU) Employment Ontario office, the Apprenticeship Network and the Elgin Middlesex Oxford Workplace Planning and Development Board. The program consisted of nine hands-on and two online workshops …

Diverse Perspectives On Adult Education And Lifelong Learning, Catharine Dishke Hondzel
Catharine Dishke Hondzel
Adult learning is a broad field of inquiry spanning a diverse range of topics, issues, and applications. As part of the course work for the graduate class in adult education and lifelong learning at Western University the contributing authors were asked to pick a topic related to adult learning that they found personally meaningful and write a chapter on that topic so that others could learn about it and use the knowledge to improve their practice. Within this volume you will find a number of different perspectives on adult education and lifelong learning. Unifying each chapter is a connection to …

Pre-publication version of a chapter about the assistive technology tools and resources available for free in Windows OS and Mac OS. Introducing higher education faculty to free resources, features and programs which they can recommend to their students or perhaps use for themselves (for instance for fading eyesight or hearing). In addition, the chapter briefly shares strategies and examples of how they might be used. The book will have an entire chapter dedicated to assistive technology as well. This is a popularized assistive technology chapter for generalist, NON special education, faculty to become acquainted with readily available and free resources. …

Inclusion Of Numeracy In Adult Basic Education, Dave Tout, Mary Schmitt
Inclusion Of Numeracy In Adult Basic Education, Dave Tout, Mary Schmitt
David (Dave) Tout
In their chapter on numeracy, the authors begin by exploring the many terms used to describe the learning of mathematics by adults. They discuss the relationship between the terms "mathematics" and "numeracy" and explain why numeracy--making meaning with numbers and mathematical processes--is the term they chose for their overview. Moving on to examine adult numeracy education in the U.S, the authors find that little attention is paid to the development of math skills among adults in Adult Basic Education (ABE) research but that adult numeracy education is prominent in practice. They highlight the development of practitioner groups that share ideas, …

By utilising on-line communication technology, The ANAMOL project aimed to address the problems of numeracy teachers who often work in isolated situations. Teachers from four states communicated both on a weekly basis using 'chat' technology, and irregularly via web- based discussion forum. Through these discussions, teaching materials were written, trialled, refined and published on a newly- developed website. This report documents the action research methodology used, the project outcomes and implications and recommendations for further on-line professional development.
