Let’S Talk Fluency: Elementary Educators’ Perceptions Of The Impact And Implementation Of Fluency Instruction Within The Leveled Literacy Intervention Framework, Megan L. Michalczak

Dissertations

This study was warranted to thoroughly understand general and special education teachers’ perceptions of the implementation of Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI) within Tier II and Tier III of a Multi-tiered System of Support (MTSS) while focusing on reading fluency instruction. Using a mixed methods approach, this study described the impact of LLI on student outcomes in reading fluency, as well as examined the integrity of LLI implementation within Tier II and Tier III through descriptive statistical analysis of student achievement data and a document review of intervention records. In addition, through the use of inductive thematic analysis of observations and …

Exploring The Effectiveness Of Using Guided Reading Approach On Promoting Arab Eighth Graders’ English Reading Fluency, Rasha Moustafa Mohamed Afandy Nov 2020

Exploring The Effectiveness Of Using Guided Reading Approach On Promoting Arab Eighth Graders’ English Reading Fluency, Rasha Moustafa Mohamed Afandy

Theses

This study aimed at exploring the effect of the guided reading approach on promoting reading fluency skills for middle school students. An explanatory mixed-method design was employed to achieve the purpose of this study. The quantitative phase of the study featured a pre and post-test after the implementation of a guided reading program for six weeks. The qualitative phase of the study featured by a collection of documents of evaluations which were conducted biweekly during the implementation of the program. These evaluative checklists were used to measure the students’ progress in reading fluency skills. The participants of this study were …

Investigating The Relationship Between Perceptions Of A “Good Reader” And Reading Performance Among Elementary And Middle School Students: An Exploration Study, Jamie A. Smith Aug 2020

Investigating The Relationship Between Perceptions Of A “Good Reader” And Reading Performance Among Elementary And Middle School Students: An Exploration Study, Jamie A. Smith

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to examine the relationships between student perceptions of a “good reader” and their reading performance. The study employed a causal-comparative and correlational design. Participants, elementary and middle school (grades 1-8) students (N= 100) attending an after-school program in the Southeastern United States, were administered the Student Perceptions of a Good Reader Scale (SPGRS) which includes two subscales: Perceptions-Decoding Efficiency (PerDE), and Perceptions-Comprehension (PerC). Additional measures included Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) Growth Reading (MAP Growth, 2020) to determine reading comprehension and a curriculum-based measure of oral reading fluency (ORF) which determines words …

Using Choral Reading To Improve Reading Fluency Of Students With Exceptionalities, Harriet J. Bessette Apr 2020

Using Choral Reading To Improve Reading Fluency Of Students With Exceptionalities, Harriet J. Bessette

Georgia Journal of Literacy

Despite the existence of a continuum of modeling reading methods (e.g., sustained silent reading, paired reading, repeated reading, and others), the goal of modeling strategies continues to be to prepare learners to read with ease and enjoyment, while gaining content knowledge for academic success. Moving to increasingly more reading independence on the part of the student is a critical goal for emergent readers, and those with exceptionalities. Reducing modeling by the teacher and increasing modeling by other students may lead to greater reading fluency and overall reading achievement and satisfaction. In this paper, the author suggests that choral reading, a …

Teachers’ Perspectives On Instructional Teaching Practices, Dr Brenda M. Heslip Jan 2020

Teachers’ Perspectives On Instructional Teaching Practices, Dr Brenda M. Heslip

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

A problem exists with students’ reading achievement at an elementary school in the southcentral area of the United States. A high proportion of students had unsatisfactory scores on their reading achievement tests between 2016 and 2019. A possible contributing factor is that teachers have struggled to provide effective efforts, strategies, and interventions to improve the reading performance of the students over this span of time. The purpose of this basic qualitative exploratory study was to examine teachers’ perspectives on how instructional teaching practices were used to help students read at grade level at the elementary school under study. The conceptual …

Effects Of The Helping Early Literacy With Practice Strategies (Helps) Program On Reading Fluency With English Language Learners, Heeyeon Chung Jan 2020

Effects Of The Helping Early Literacy With Practice Strategies (Helps) Program On Reading Fluency With English Language Learners, Heeyeon Chung

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the HELPS Program on the reading fluency skills of English Learners (ELs) using a multiple-baseline single case design methodology. Participants in this study included five ELs attending a public elementary school in northern New York State. Students were identified for participation through a review of available records indicating below-average reading fluency skills and/or teacher recommendations based on reading fluency performance in the classroom. Visual analysis and Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM) were used to evaluate Words Correct Per Minute (WCPM) scores from the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills …

© 2020 Eskisehir Osmangazi University. Students native to the Arabian Gulf region often struggle with reading skills. The purpose of this study was to explore the reading habits and reading culture of Emirati undergraduate students and to investigate the use of a particular reading strategy (Listening While Reading) on undergraduate Emirati students reading rate and comprehension. This case study was conducted through a mixed method research design. It was carried out with sixty-one SLL (second language learners) undergraduate students. By assigning them into two groups, the experimental group (28 students) was given books with an auditory component, while the control …
