On Matters Of Feedback: Supporting The Online Grading Feedback Process With Web-Based, Collaborative Comment Banks, Jennifer Schneider

Theses and Dissertations

This action research study describes how a web-based, feedback comment bank impacts online instructor efficacy as well as attitudes and perceptions associated with the online grading feedback process. Bandura’s work on individual self-efficacy, Tschannen-Moran and Hoy’s work on instructor efficacy, and Hattie’s work on collective efficacy, along with Wiggins and Hattie and Clarke’s work on grading feedback represent the core of the study’s theoretical framework. The study adopted a mixed-methods action research design to examine three research questions: “How does the use of a web-based grading feedback comment bank impact online instructor’s teaching efficacy?,” “How does the use of a …

The Challenge Of Counseling Research In Developing A Signature Pedagogy For Quantitative Methods, Richard S. Balkin Sep 2020

The Challenge Of Counseling Research In Developing A Signature Pedagogy For Quantitative Methods, Richard S. Balkin

Teaching and Supervision in Counseling

Research in counseling is at risk of becoming impertinent, if not irrelevant, with an over-emphasis on perceptions of counselors or counselors in-training, and a lack of evidence supporting client-centered outcomes and community needs. Students seeking doctoral degrees in training may have limited interest in research, and research courses are typically taught outside of the discipline by individuals unaffiliated with the counseling profession. Research courses may not be aligned with the needs of counseling researchers who focus on individuals and small groups. Developing a signature pedagogy emphasizing tools and methods consistent with the needs of emerging counseling researchers may be important …

Exploring The Association Of Academic Psychological Capital And Experiential Learning With Academic Performance, Diane Kutz

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This research study expands upon the body of research seeking to define the effect of Academic Psychological Capital (Academic PsyCap) and student Participation in Experiential Learning on one success measure of students, Academic Performance, as measured by grade point average (GPA). It also seeks to investigate the moderating effect of Experiential Learning on the relationship between Academic PsyCap and Academic Performance. The study argues that Social Cognitive Theory and Broaden and Build Theory supported a reciprocal relationship between Academic PsyCap and Participation in Experiential Learning Activities and the positive relationship between both constructs and Academic Performance.

The study was conducted …

A Comparison Of The Efficacy And Beliefs Of Middle School Math Teachers And Science Teachers Towards Stem Education, Kenneth Lamar Deal Jr Mar 2020

A Comparison Of The Efficacy And Beliefs Of Middle School Math Teachers And Science Teachers Towards Stem Education, Kenneth Lamar Deal Jr

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Little research exists in the attitudes and efficacy of middle school math teachers and science teachers toward Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education. STEM education refers to an integrated approach to teaching math and science that incorporates problem solving, problem-based learning, and discovery rather than teaching these disciplines in isolation. Teachers’ efficacy and beliefs, outcome expectancy beliefs, and the use of STEM instructional strategies may vary by discipline. Each of these aspects are important in designing professional learning to meet the teachers’ needs as well as their capacity to implement integrated, problem-based learning into the classroom. Research suggests teacher …

Exploring Perceptions Of Experiences That Promote Self-Efficacy In Foster Care Youth: A Phenomenological Study, Keishea Allen Jan 2020

Exploring Perceptions Of Experiences That Promote Self-Efficacy In Foster Care Youth: A Phenomenological Study, Keishea Allen

Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-

Society expects foster care youth who age out of the system to be independent and autonomous directly, yet this is rarely the case. Many of these youth, unlike children that grew up with familial support, are ill-equipped to overcome the challenges of young adulthood or employ problem-solving skills. Thus, these foster care youth are a potential risk and prone to become a part of a vulnerable population. Foster care youth are less likely to graduate high school, go on to college or trade school, or successfully graduate from an academic program. Despite these challenges, however, some foster care youth become …

Mindfulness, And Workplace Outcomes For Secondary Teachers, Jonathan Erickson Jan 2020

Mindfulness, And Workplace Outcomes For Secondary Teachers, Jonathan Erickson

CGU Theses & Dissertations

For teachers to most effectively teach and support students in their classrooms, we want them to feel good about the work they do and burnout from emotional exhaustion. This study investigates how mindfulness, as measured by a comprehensive questionnaire, may play an important role in supporting teachers’ well-being, and specifically asks how mindfulness and other demographic factors may affect the key workplace outcomes of job satisfaction, efficacy, burnout, and resilience. Analyses were performed on data collected from 86 participants, of 330 who were contacted, and who were all secondary teachers in the Los Angeles area at total of five urban …

A Comparison Study Of Teacher Efficacy And Principal Leadership Behaviors At The Elementary And Middle School Levels, Keith Ezell Jan 2020

A Comparison Study Of Teacher Efficacy And Principal Leadership Behaviors At The Elementary And Middle School Levels, Keith Ezell

Doctor of Education Dissertations

The single most important factor for the success of a student in school is the teacher, yet many factors impact the teacher’s ability to do the job as effectively as possible. Data exists regarding the multiple influences that affect the teacher’s sense of self-efficacy, however, specific data regarding leadership behaviors is limited. Research shows that student achievement is affected by the teacher, therefore it is imperative to determine what leadership behaviors impact teacher efficacy the most. The purpose of this quantitative study was to explore the impact of principal behaviors on teacher efficacy. Also, the study sought to compare the …

Correlation Between Teacher Efficacy And Effective Professional Learning Communities, David Glen Gilliam Jan 2020

Correlation Between Teacher Efficacy And Effective Professional Learning Communities, David Glen Gilliam

Online Theses and Dissertations

High levels of teacher efficacy are consistently identified as having a strong impact on student achievement. This is reasoned by Donohoo (2016) as “If educators’ realities are filtered through the belief that they can do very little to influence student achievement, then it is very likely these beliefs will be manifested in their practice” (p. 7). Conversely, when educators believe they influence student achievement the results are very positive. Hattie (2016) indicates that a strong collective efficacy is the greatest single factor that influences student achievement.

The questions addressed by this study examine the relationships between teachers’ collective-efficacy and professional …

Guiding Students To Success: A Systematic Review Of Research On Guided Notes As An Instructional Strategy From 2009-2019, Bryan Biggers, Tian Luo

STEMPS Faculty Publications

Guided notes were introduced decades ago, but there is still debate over their efficacy in improving student outcomes. The purpose of this study is to examine peer-reviewed research on guided notes for adult learners in general populations since 2009, understanding the effects of guided notes on student learning, the knowledge and content areas supported by guided notes, and the impact of modality. Results of the 22 included studies indicate that students perceive guided notes in a positive light, and guided notes improve results in certain knowledge domains especially with complex content. However, modality does not influence the efficacy of guided …
