Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge In Action: A Case Study Of A Middle School Digital Documentary Project, Mark J. Hofer, Kathleen Owings Swan

Mark Hofer

In recent years researchers in educational technology have begun to look closely at the complexity of integrating technology in K-12 classrooms. The development of the notion of Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPCK) provides a useful theoretical framework to explore the requisite forms of teacher knowledge required to effectively integrate technology in classroom work. This case study explores the three domains of teacher knowledge and their intersections in a sixth grade digital documentary project. On the surface, the setting for the work (particularly the skilled teachers with whom we worked) seemed to be the "best-case scenario" for technology integration, and yet, …

Teacher Attitudes Toward Technology Integration In A One-To-One Mobile Device Middle-School Classroom, Gary L. Mosley Aug 2019

Teacher Attitudes Toward Technology Integration In A One-To-One Mobile Device Middle-School Classroom, Gary L. Mosley

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

As the classroom climate transforms into a more technology-enhanced environment with increased device availability, there is a growing need to understand how attitudes among teachers may be influenced by the use of these devices in the classroom. Because of current technology trends, device integration is essential to meet education goals (Keengwe, Schnellert, & Mills, 2012). Research suggests that the use of mobile devices in the classroom along with the expectations for teachers to integrate these devices into their curriculum can have significant effects on attitudes and behaviors among teachers and therefore, should be studied (Sahin et al., 2017; Moore, 2016; …

Technology And Teacher Preparation In Exemplary Institutions: 1994 To 2003, Mark J. Hofer Jun 2019

Technology And Teacher Preparation In Exemplary Institutions: 1994 To 2003, Mark J. Hofer

Mark Hofer

In a 1994 study commissioned by the Congressional Office of Technology Assessment, Mergendoller, Johnston, Rockman, & Willis (1994) examined four exemplary institutions to identify their approaches to integrating technology into teacher education. A decade later, the field would benefit from a comparison of current approaches of infusing technology into teacher education to the 1994 findings. This study examines the approaches of the first seven teacher education programs to receive the ISTE NETS Distinguished Achievement Award. Current approaches to the process are outlined, including the identification of the key factors impacting their implementation. A comparison of the 1994 and the present …

The 2002 National Educational Technology Standards (NETS) Distinguished Achievement Awards, sponsored by the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE), were awarded to six teacher education programs across the United States. The awards recognize institutions that exemplify successful integration of the National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers (NETS[solid dot]T) into teacher education programs. Institutions across the country completed an extensive application process to be selected one of the first six recipients of the ISTE Distinguished Achievement award. This process included online documentation that demonstrated the program's implementation of the NETS[solid dot]T models and practices. This article provides a means of …

Grounded Tech Integration: An Effective Approach Based On Content, Pedagogy, And Teacher Planning, Judi Harris, Mark J. Hofer Jun 2019

Grounded Tech Integration: An Effective Approach Based On Content, Pedagogy, And Teacher Planning, Judi Harris, Mark J. Hofer

Mark Hofer

Successful technology integration must focus on standards-based, curriculum-related learning outcomes rather than on the technologies themselves. In the first installment of a seven-part series, we offer a grounded approach to technology integration based on content, pedagogy, and how teachers plan instruction.

Camera! Action! Collaborate With Digital Moviemaking, Kathleen Owings Swan, Mark J. Hofer, Linda S. Levstik Jun 2019

Camera! Action! Collaborate With Digital Moviemaking, Kathleen Owings Swan, Mark J. Hofer, Linda S. Levstik

Mark Hofer

Broadly defined, digital moviemaking integrates a variety of media (images, sound, text, video, narration) to communicate with an audience. There is near-ubiquitous access to the necessary software (MovieMaker and iMovie are bundled free with their respective operating systems) and hardware (computers with Internet access, digital cameras, etc.). This easy access, along with the open-ended nature of digital movies, presents powerful opportunities to design student-centered, inquiry-based history projects. Engaging students as digital directors can not only help them develop historical questions and select and evaluate sources relevant to those questions, but can frame (literally and figuratively) and present historical interpretations. In …

Conclusions: Based on …

A Phenomenological Study Of The Experiences Of Elementary Title I Teachers' Use Of Digital Technology In The Classroom, Rebecca S. Acosta Apr 2019

A Phenomenological Study Of The Experiences Of Elementary Title I Teachers' Use Of Digital Technology In The Classroom, Rebecca S. Acosta

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

If Title I elementary students are not given opportunities to learn how to utilize digital technology in their classrooms, a whole segment of the population will lack the knowledge and skills to become successful upon graduation and contribute to the betterment of society. The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to describe the experiences of Central Texas elementary teachers’ use of digital technology in their Title I classrooms. The central research question in this study was: how do Title I elementary teachers in Central Texas describe their experiences using digital technology in the classroom? Two theories framed this investigation. …

Middle School Teachers' Acceptance And Use Of Edmodo To Sustain Networked Collaboration, Howard Jehu Brent Jan 2019

Middle School Teachers' Acceptance And Use Of Edmodo To Sustain Networked Collaboration, Howard Jehu Brent

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Although some middle school teachers integrate social media platforms into instruction, they generally use traditional and teacher-centered strategies rather than those that are innovative and student-centered. A gap exists in the literature on how teachers could use social media tools such as Edmodo to engage middle school students for innovative online collaboration. This qualitative case study explored the factors that contributed to the acceptance and use of Edmodo by middle school teachers in a Mid-Atlantic urban school district. Specifically, the research explored how teachers leveraged Edmodo to initiate and sustain networked collaboration with their students. The Unified Theory of Acceptance …

Vocational High School Teachers' Perceptions Of Technology Integration At Their School, Darlene Sherry Morrison Jan 2019

Vocational High School Teachers' Perceptions Of Technology Integration At Their School, Darlene Sherry Morrison

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

In a suburban vocational high school in the northeastern United States, teachers revealed that professional development training in technology was not equipping teachers with the skills nor was it giving them the support needed to implement technology in their instructional practices. The purpose of this qualitative project study was to explore vocational high school teachers’ perceptions about participating in professional development that relate to technology integration in the classroom at a suburban vocational high school in the northeastern United States. The study was guided by Roger’s diffusion of innovation model/theory, which outlines how technology advances spread throughout a population, from …

Perceptions Of Community College Students And Instructors On Traditional And Technology-Based Learning, Lukishia Denise Washington Jan 2019

Perceptions Of Community College Students And Instructors On Traditional And Technology-Based Learning, Lukishia Denise Washington

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The college under study only requires instructors to use traditional resources to teach literacy content leading to a variation in the use of technology within literacy courses. In this college, technology is not being integrated well, too little or inconsistent exposure to technology depending on the instructor. The purpose of this study was to investigate the attitudes of faculty toward integration of technology into classroom instruction and students' perceptions of technology as a part of their learning. Dewey's theory of educative experience was the conceptual framework used in this study. Data collection for this qualitative study was based on semistructured …
