Duty Of Care And Risk Management For Institutions Of Higher Education, Jorge De La Torre
Duty Of Care And Risk Management For Institutions Of Higher Education, Jorge De La Torre
CUP Ed.D. Dissertations
Institutions of Higher Education (IHE) authority has evolved from nearly absolute power in the hands of colleges and universities to an approach more focused on individual students and their rights. Yet, while college authority over campus life and student conduct has diminished, the duty of care required in the form of additional student affairs services has increased. The history of the complicated relationship between students and IHE starts with the concept “in loco parentis,” which is Latin for “in place of parents.” A lack of proper and continued risk assessment and a lack of effective and manageable policies and procedures …

Navigating The Intersections Of Identity: The Shared Experiences Of Women Of Color Chief Student Affairs Officers, Nicole Caridad Ralston
Navigating The Intersections Of Identity: The Shared Experiences Of Women Of Color Chief Student Affairs Officers, Nicole Caridad Ralston
University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
There is a lack of equitable representation of women of color in upper-leadership roles on college campuses. The purpose of this dissertation was to explore how women of color who serve as Chief Student Affairs Officers (CSAO), navigated both their racial and gender identities in their professional role, how they were prepared for this identity navigation throughout their career, and how they mentor younger professional women of color. Women of color CSAOs only make up about 4% of the population, so it was important to learn from their experiences in order to improve as a field. A qualitative study using …

Factors Contributing To The Attrition Of New Student Affairs Professionals, Nicole Millar Allbee
Factors Contributing To The Attrition Of New Student Affairs Professionals, Nicole Millar Allbee
Dissertations
Alumni who graduated within the previous five years from student affairs master’s degree programs across the nation were surveyed to examine issues related to attrition. In total, 697 alumni responded, of which 588 (84.36%) were still in the field of student affairs and 109 (15.64%) had departed. Participants were surveyed regarding their levels of occupational commitment to student affairs and their satisfaction and burnout in their first postgraduate professional role in order to understand how these factors influenced their retention in the profession. These measures were assessed for all alumni as well as for both comparison groups and a logistic …

Other Scholarly Publications
Supervision is an essential part of the operation of a division of student affairs. However, staff who supervise often receive no formal training. While supervision is discussed in the literature, there is insufficient direction for supervisor behaviors based on an assessment of supervisee level of development and performance. This article outlines the rationale for a more in depth analysis of four possible supervisee levels with recommendations for appropriate supervisor behavior based on two guidelines: Task and Emotional Proximity.
Do Expectations And Reflection In A Master’S Level Education Course Contribute To Sense Of Belonging And Learning? A Peer Review Of Teaching Inquiry Project, Stephanie Bondi
UNL Faculty Course Portfolios
This poster describes a classroom inquiry project completed as part of the advanced peer review of teaching program at UNL in 2019. In this project, the course instructor wondered if some small interventions could lead to more sense of belonging and greater learning in the course. Literature suggests a lack of sense of belonging can negative affect a student’s engagement and learning. The intervention plan included (a) setting the expectation that students work to create an inclusive and affirming environment and (b) asking students three times during the term to reflect on the extent to which people have been doing …

From Collaborative To Collegial Communities: Transitioning From Student Affairs Practitioner To Faculty, Michelle Lea Boettcher, Dena Kniess, Mimi Benjamin
From Collaborative To Collegial Communities: Transitioning From Student Affairs Practitioner To Faculty, Michelle Lea Boettcher, Dena Kniess, Mimi Benjamin
Georgia Journal of College Student Affairs
While student affairs (SA) practitioner expertise can inform a faculty member’s knowledge in the classroom, the transition into a tenure-track faculty role from student affairs administrative roles is complex. One of the differences new faculty members with SA administrator backgrounds experience is a change in the work community and shift from collaborative to collegial cultures. While studies have examined the transition of student affairs professionals from graduate programs to full time student affairs practitioner roles and graduate students into the professoriate, there is limited scholarship on the transitional experiences of student affairs practitioners moving into faculty positions. This qualitative study …

Exploring The Relationship Between Fraternal Organizations And The University Of Michigan: An Organizational Analysis, Devin Berghorst
Exploring The Relationship Between Fraternal Organizations And The University Of Michigan: An Organizational Analysis, Devin Berghorst
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between fraternal organizations and the University of Michigan and the implications for student affairs. This study was conducted by analyzing three distinct eras (two eras of politicization and one era of quiescence). Each era featured conflict between fraternal organizations and institutional actors (faculty, staff), and was analyzed to determine what, if any, implications there were for student affairs at the University of Michigan. The conceptual framework applied concepts from areas pertaining to conflict and organizational theory. Additionally, these concepts were informed by research about political organizations. The research method used …
Racial Microaggressions And Alienation Among Hmong American College Students, Bruce Yang
Racial Microaggressions And Alienation Among Hmong American College Students, Bruce Yang
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Students of color continue to experience racism within institutions of higher education across the United States. These experiences often include racial microaggressions, which are evolved forms of racism that are subtle, difficult to detect, and harmful. Racial microaggressions have been found to be associated with several consequences including mental health, emotional, and physical problems (Dahlia & Lieberman, 2010; Connolly, 2011; Cheng, Tran, Miyake, & Kim, 2017). Furthermore, studies have also alluded to the potential relationship between racial microaggressions and the dimensions of alienation for student populations of color (Fissori, 2010; James, 1988; Lambert, Herman, Bynum, & Ialongo, 2009; Sauceda, 2010; …
