The Effects Of Schema On Reading Comprehension At Coleman Elementary, Celeste Mills Dec 2019

The Effects Of Schema On Reading Comprehension At Coleman Elementary, Celeste Mills

Masters of Arts in Education Action Research Papers

Schema is a framework that helps us organize and interpret information. Developing schema is essential in the comprehension of text. Strong readers can make sense of what they read by seeing how it fits with what they already know. Teachers must help students make connections before, during, and after reading.

Without schema students are unable to infer because making inferences involves creating meaning that is not explicitly stated by the author. Readers use clues in the text plus their personal insights and experiences to make meaning of the text (Roit, 2014). My school is a Title 1 school with a …

Teachers’ Perceptions Of Reading Wonders: Is It Really A Wonder? A Program Evaluation, Myra A. Richardson Dec 2019

Teachers’ Perceptions Of Reading Wonders: Is It Really A Wonder? A Program Evaluation, Myra A. Richardson

Dissertations

Reading programs are essential tools for leaders to use while building literacy. The transfer from instructional delivery to student knowledge should be easily recognizable in the end-of-year assessment data. As the principal analyzing the end-of-year data, I discovered a problem when I struggled to see this transfer in my data. The purpose of this program evaluation was to determine whether teachers perceived Reading Wonders to be an effective reading program for the school district as well as whether the assessment data aligned with teachers’ perceptions. A survey was used to collect responses from the participants and an Excel spreadsheet was …

The Effectiveness Of Cooperative Learning In The Reading Classroom, Amelia Tankersley, Joshua A. Cuevas

Perspectives In Learning

This research examined the effectiveness of specific methods of cooperative learning on reading comprehension, motivation, and attitudes. The study implemented Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) and the Jigsaw method in a rural public elementary school and included 60 participants from 3rd grade reading classes. One group used the CSR method to read information on four different topics while the other group read information on the same topics using the Jigsaw method. After controlling for initial attitudes, motivation, and global reading comprehension, the results indicated that neither of these methods led to greater gains in these areas than the other. However, when …

A Mini-Meta-Analysis Of The Efficacy Of Dialogic Reading On Silent Reading Efficiency And Comprehension In First Graders, Deborah A. Carroll, Garett Masocco, Joshua Fraser, Mary Spodnick Oct 2019

A Mini-Meta-Analysis Of The Efficacy Of Dialogic Reading On Silent Reading Efficiency And Comprehension In First Graders, Deborah A. Carroll, Garett Masocco, Joshua Fraser, Mary Spodnick

NERA Conference Proceedings 2019

We trained undergraduate student interns to conduct standardized assessments and one-on-one dialogic reading interventions with first graders. The challenges in working in local elementary schools include: small sample sizes, diverse and potentially non-normal samples, and variable testing and intervention conditions. Despite the challenges, we found significant improvements in silent reading efficiency and comprehension and a narrowing of the gap between skilled and non-skilled readers. We report on a mini-meta-analysis of the efficacy of dialogic reading on silent reading comprehension and efficiency, in multiple samples of first graders between 2013 and 2018.

Oral Reading Fluency Scores As An Indicator Of Reading Comprehension In Title I Schools, Carrie Barr Mott Aug 2019

Oral Reading Fluency Scores As An Indicator Of Reading Comprehension In Title I Schools, Carrie Barr Mott

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This study investigated the relationship between second grade students’ oral reading fluency scores as an indicator of reading comprehension achievement. A correlational design was used with a sample of 302 students from three South Carolina Title I schools. The students’ oral reading fluency (DORF) and overall, informational, and literary comprehension scores (MAP) were recorded. The researcher completed three bivariate linear regression analyses to determine if overall, informational, and literary comprehension could be predicted by students’ oral reading fluency rates. The researcher found that that there is a significant predictive relationship between the predictor and criterion variables. The statistical method used …

The Relationship Between Reading Level And Standardized Achievement Results, Monifa Johnson

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations

This quantitative study examined the relationship between eighth grade ELA MAAP achievement and DRP score in lowest performing students. Navigating Award-Winning Nonfiction Children's Literature, Jennifer M. Smith, Marla K. Robertson

Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications

Nonfiction children's literature has changed in recent years, including an increase in organizational, design, and text features. The authors conducted a content analysis of 112 nonfiction award-winning and honor books from 2000 to 2018 to examine how the books have changed over time. The authors discuss the patterns, changes, and complexities found in nonfiction children's literature and provide text sets and guiding questions for classroom instruction and exploration of three features that appear in books in a variety of ways and may be challenging for students: atypical text, graphics with information, and supplemental expository information.

The Impact Of Individualized Structured Reading Intervention On High School Students In Special Education: An Action Research Study, Nikki Clark Apr 2019

The Impact Of Individualized Structured Reading Intervention On High School Students In Special Education: An Action Research Study, Nikki Clark

Theses and Dissertations

Reading skills comprise the following three categories: decoding, fluency, and comprehension. All three of these skills are necessary for students to become successful readers in and out of academic settings. Many students in special education read far below their grade level; difficulty reading is particularly challenging for such students because, in addition to limiting academic success, under-developed reading skills compromise students’ academic and functional independence. This study aimed to examine how a structured, individualized reading intervention may help high school students in special education – students who have been diagnosed with one specific disability or a combination of approved disabilities …

The Impact Of A Teacher’S Implementation Of The Readworks Digital Reading Program On Second Graders’ Reading Fluency And Comprehension Test Scores, Cynthia Molina

Teaching & Learning Theses & Dissertations

Since elementary school student performance on the end-of-year summative Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) Standards of Learning (SOL) reading test is vital in impacting school accreditation, computer-assisted instruction has become popular. Online reading programs have existed in many elementary schools in Norfolk Public School district since 1996, such as Breakthrough to Literacy (McGraw-Hill Companies, 2002), Istation in 2014 (Mathes, Torgesen, & Herron, 2015), and the i-Ready program from 2015 to 2017 (Curriculum Associates, 2014). The problem is that there is insufficient empirical research supporting the use of the ReadWorks program at several Norfolk, Virginia’s elementary schools.

The purpose of this …
