Background: Andrews University’s administration acknowledges the university’s obligation to seek higher levels of community engagement. The relatively recent adoption of the motto—Seek knowledge, Affirm faith, Change the world—speaks to the intent of the organization to become an agent for positive change. Consequently, educators are encouraged to understand and support community engagement efforts to mold students into World Changers. It is with this backdrop that Andrews University embarked on a pilot project with the School of Nursing to see the effect of empathy development on a service-learning program at Benton Harbor High School.

The purpose of this literature review is to address how internalized and externalized behaviors in adolescents impact academic achievement in faith-based institutions. This research intends to bring awareness to the prevalence of mental health concerns faced by adolescents, as well as the need for mental health services in the education system. This research will also identify the relationship between internalizing and externalizing behaviors, and academic achievement. Facilitating change in learning organizations must be approached from a multitude of perspectives. Students are often ignored and uninvolved in improvement efforts. As key participants in schooling practices, students should be involved in change processes. Students can take an active role in developing skills and knowledge to help them thrive in learning environments.
