2019 Diversity Climate Survey, Illinois Mathematics And Science Academy

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: Resources

In April 2019, a survey regarding diversity and school climate was administered by the Office of Equity and Excellence. This survey was adapted from the National Climate Survey developed by the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN). There were a total of 529students that took the survey. Those students that had incomplete surveys (n = 15) or who marked all possible choices for sexual orientation (n = 8), race/ethnicity (n = 2), or reasons for being unsafe (n = 3)were excluded from the data analysis. As a poet, artist and organizer, Reyes performs internationally and facilitates educational performances and workshops by merging creative expression and critical thought. His mission is to provide a participatory educational environment through poetry and hip-hop to address issues of social justice and cultural identity.

His work has been featured on HBO, CNN, PBS, The Chicago Tribunes Hoy Noticias, Latin Nation, Chicago Public Radio, National Public Radio, Pacifica, WBAI, and Democracy Now.

This has been a year of transition, moving from the 2014 Board Approved Diversity Plan to the development of its’ next rendition, the Equity and Excellence plan, as directed by the 2018 Board Approved Equity and Excellence policy. During this year of transition, the shift in who is driving this work has moved from a voluntary Diversity committee to the Senior Leadership Team (SLT). To ensure that previous Diversity initiatives continued, there were focused Project Teams who implemented aspects of the diversity plan throughout the year, but not at the same magnitude as in previous years.
