Assessment Strategies To Promote Peer Learning In An Online Course, Pauline Rooney, Caitríona Ní Shé
Assessment Strategies To Promote Peer Learning In An Online Course, Pauline Rooney, Caitríona Ní Shé
Conference papers
The value of peer learning in higher education is now well recognised. Just as we continually learn from eachother in our everyday lives, so our students also learn from eachother as part of informal and formal learning experiences. Within educational programmes, peer learning is facilitated through a variety of pedagogical strategies which promote active participation, collaboration and the sharing of knowledge and ideas. With the increasing ubiquity of social networking and online learning platforms, new opportunities for facilitating peer learning, have emerged. Within online courses – where students often study at geographically disparate locations – peer learning strategies assume arguably …
Scaffolded Discourse Within A Comprehensive Literacy Model, Kimberlee Wagner
Scaffolded Discourse Within A Comprehensive Literacy Model, Kimberlee Wagner
Dissertations
Research has shown that successful models of school change have several common features: a balance of teacher autonomy and accountability, high-quality professional development, quality leadership, and the support of an outside partner. One model that has these features is the comprehensive literacy model within the Partnership of Comprehensive Literacy model. This mixed methods study examined the language of scaffolding that occurred in three settings within the model: grade level meetings, coaching and mentoring, and small group instruction. Participants in this study included the literacy coaches, interventionists and first-grade teachers at two schools within the PCL network. Three levels of scaffolding …
Scaffolding For Optimal Challenge In K–12 Problem-Based Learning, Nam Ju Kim, Brian R. Belland, Daryl Axelrod
Scaffolding For Optimal Challenge In K–12 Problem-Based Learning, Nam Ju Kim, Brian R. Belland, Daryl Axelrod
Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning
Establishing optimal challenge enhances intrinsic motivation, interest, and the probability of success in the learning activity. In K–12 problem-based learning (PBL), students may struggle to address associated tasks that are beyond their current ability levels. This paper suggested learner-centered scaffolding systems (LSS) to improve K–12 students’ perception of optimal challenge by addressing their learning issues in PBL. LSS enhances students’ experience in autonomy and competence by providing multiple types of scaffolding in accordance with students’ different needs and difficulties in PBL. Students can control the nature and frequency of scaffolding by themselves according to their needs and ability, and it …
Research And Writing In The Disciplines: A Model For Faculty-Librarian Collaboration, Erika Scheurer, Talia Nadir
Research And Writing In The Disciplines: A Model For Faculty-Librarian Collaboration, Erika Scheurer, Talia Nadir
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
In our collaborative faculty-librarian presentation, we will offer a model for institutionalizing information literacy (IL) instruction through our university’s Writing in the Disciplines courses. In this model, developed through primary and secondary research, we facilitate and support faculty-librarian collaborations, guiding pairs to maximize the potential for IL instruction as a means of supporting student writing.
As the extensive literature on faculty-librarian collaboration suggests, the "one shot" approach to IL instruction is not ideal for several reasons. Chief among them is that without shared understandings of the role of librarians and of what IL is (and is not), IL can become …
Libguides ~ Ways To Engage Students In First Year Seminars, Carol Wittig
Libguides ~ Ways To Engage Students In First Year Seminars, Carol Wittig
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
The University of Richmond offers students an array of First Year Seminars to choose from during the fall and spring of their freshman year. All seminars provide opportunities for critical reading and thinking and establish a foundation for effective written and oral communications skills, information literacy, and library research skills. As a common student experience and taught in lieu of a freshman composition sequence, First Year Seminars offer ways for librarians to collaborate with faculty through Library Research Sessions. The overall goals of the FYS Library Research Sessions are to introduce students to fundamental library resources and services, while developing …

A Scaffolding Approach Using Interviews And Narrative Inquiry, Sharon Heilmann
A Scaffolding Approach Using Interviews And Narrative Inquiry, Sharon Heilmann
Networks: An Online Journal for Teacher Research
This article examines how educational scaffolding was used in a graduate research methods course to encourage student mastery of two qualitative research concepts, interviews and narrative inquiry. Findings suggest that scaffolding resulted in students’ mastery of both concepts as well as students’ increased attention to quality of interview questions and outcomes. Further implications suggest scaffolding would be useful in combining other qualitative topics such as integrating content analysis skills with research designs such as phenomenology, grounded theory, and case studies.
Scaffolding The Implementation Of The Engineering Design Process Within Stem Based Projects, Jeffrey Kohoutek, Chris Lyons
Scaffolding The Implementation Of The Engineering Design Process Within Stem Based Projects, Jeffrey Kohoutek, Chris Lyons
Masters of Arts in Education Action Research Papers
The purpose of this research was to improve student understanding and use of the engineering design process by scaffolding instruction of implementation during STEM project-based learning. The study was conducted in a fifth-grade engineering class and a seventh and eighth grade technology class with a total of 79 participants. The researchers collected data through pre and post student questionnaires, student checklists, researcher observations and reflection journals. Findings indicated that scaffolding instruction improved student understanding and implementation of the engineering design process. Further research could indicate the effectiveness of teaching best practices within each step of the process and further understanding …
Design Scaffolding For Computational Making In The Visual Programming Tool Aris, Whitney E. Lewis
Design Scaffolding For Computational Making In The Visual Programming Tool Aris, Whitney E. Lewis
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In this thesis, I explore how design scaffolds, or (i.e., intellectual supports) can assist learners engaging with computational making processes. Computational making combines programming with artifact production. Due to the complexity of tasks involved in computational making, there is an increasing need to explore and develop support systems for learners engaging with computational making.
With $3,000 funding from Utah State University’s College of Education and Human Services, an undergraduate researcher and I, who both have experience with youth and computational making research, explored how design scaffolds impact youth engaging with computational making processes. To do so, we held a workshop …
Scaffolding Writing Assignments In Introductory Art History, Monique Kerman
Scaffolding Writing Assignments In Introductory Art History, Monique Kerman
Backward by Design Mini-Studies
As a result of my participation in WWU’s Backward by Design retreat in 2017, I sought to modify the written assignments of my introductory Art History course for pre-majors in order to better prepare students working towards a lengthy research paper. In course evaluations and anecdotally, students reported being intimidated by the size and scope of the final paper, and asked for more writing practice. I decided that instead of requiring a high stakes research paper as the culmination of the coursework, I would scaffold assignments throughout the course that would eventually lead students to composing a thesis around which …
Alternating Treatments For Idiom Interpretation By Children With Specific Language Impairments, Monique S. Kaye
Alternating Treatments For Idiom Interpretation By Children With Specific Language Impairments, Monique S. Kaye
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine the effect of two idiom interventions by students with Specific Language Impairment (SLI). Idioms are linguistic expressions that have figurative meanings other than their literal interpretation. There is a strong correlation between idiom interpretation and academic success (Nippold & Martin, 1989). Students are exposed to idioms in media, in school, literature, and in daily interactions with peers and adults (Nippold, Moran, & Schwarz, 2001).Method: Three school-aged students (n=3) with SLI ages 11;9–13;8 (mean age = 12;8) were provided a language intervention for idioms embedded in stories with pictures (n=10) …

Middle School Natural Disaster Inquiry Unit With Scaffolding, Megan Mali Ireson-Janke
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Inquiry based learning is complex and challenging. In order to maximize its benefits, it is vital to understand what teaching methods and scaffolds best support different student populations as they are introduced to inquiry-based learning in different contexts. One major challenge of inquiry is organizational: planning the process and organizing the information. This project studied the effectiveness of using a particular scaffolding tool, an advanced organizer template, to support seventh grade science students in an introductory inquiry-based unit. One group of seventh grade students used the advanced organizer template and one group did not. Students chose the type of project …

Theses and Dissertations
This work is dedicated to some incredibly important people in my life. First, to my students everywhere, you have challenged me to become a better curriculum leader and a better historian. Many of you have inspired me beyond anything that you can imagine. Second, to my colleagues, you have helped create a drive inside of me to seek the best in my students and myself. You have also put up with my seemingly unending impromptu lectures about the newest thought I had on pedagogy.
Finally and most importantly, to my family, it is you that I owe an indescribable debt. …
Examining Parental Scaffolding In Computer Based Contexts As A Function Of Task Difficulty And Mobility Of Computer Device, Domenica De Pasquale
Examining Parental Scaffolding In Computer Based Contexts As A Function Of Task Difficulty And Mobility Of Computer Device, Domenica De Pasquale
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Technology is part of everyday life for most adults and children. Digital technologies allow children to engage with technology and the digital world earlier in their development than previously experienced (Orlando, 2011; Plowman, Stevenson, Stephen, & McPake, 2012). Two studies were conducted to explore joint media-based interactions of parents and their children. Parental views, age, gender, experience and familiarity with technology were considered in conjunction with parent-child interactions when engaged with stationary and mobile computers and when engaged with easy and difficult to navigate software. Study 1 employed self-report measures consistent with the wider body of literature available regarding early …
