Mental Health Research Productivity Of Nasp-Approved School Psychology Programs: 2010-2015, Mala Nash

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

With the evident need for mental health support of children and adolescents, there are identified professionals prepared to provide services within the school setting. The school psychologist is considered a key resource for providing mental health services such as preventive and crisis response (Dwyer, 2004; Armistead, 2008). Based on our country’s mental health needs and the significant role that schools can make in meeting those needs, it is pertinent to take a closer look at the literature specifically related to mental health. This review focused specifically on the field of school psychology’s contribution to mental health literature and established a …

Using Subitizing As A Math Lesson Warm-Up To Improve Automaticity Scores, Meagan Ferris May 2018

Using Subitizing As A Math Lesson Warm-Up To Improve Automaticity Scores, Meagan Ferris

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of implementing 10-minute warm-ups before math lessons that included the structuring of numbers to 10 through the use of imaging with fingers, dots, 10-frames, bead, and dice flashes. The end result being an improvement in students’ abilities to compose and decompose numbers in addition or subtraction math facts. The study addressed the questions:

  1. Can subitizing increase addition and subtraction automaticity?
  2. How does the FastBridge Assessment Tool enable teachers to document how students use numbers flexibly (combining numbers to make another number)?
  3. Can subitizing interventions be effective in helping students develop …

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to determine whether the effect of using small group reading intervention activities in an after-school program with second grade students can increase their foundational reading skills and oral reading fluency. The students selected for the study were already enrolled in the after-school program. The study evaluated the reading skills of 12 of the 17 second grade students at Circle of Life Academy. The assessments used were the AIMS-web Plus assessment and Assessing Reading Multiple Measures assessments. The results of the AIMS-web fluency scores showed that those students who received interventions in reading fluency …

Interventions To Reduce Self-Injurious Behaviors In Youth With Autism, Joshua Sasse May 2018

Interventions To Reduce Self-Injurious Behaviors In Youth With Autism, Joshua Sasse

Culminating Projects in Special Education

The high prevalence rate of individuals with autism who display self-injurious behaviors, coupled with the growing number of youth with an autism diagnosis, has created a need for an expanded array of assistive options. This starred paper examines, through literature review, the effectiveness of interventions on self-injurious behaviors in individuals with autism. Behavior, and non-behavior, based interventions are considered from domestic and international sources. Behavior based interventions continue to be an effective option that can be applied to a wide spectrum of students, however there was significant effective use of alternative intervention strategies for specific individual applications. This holds true …

Teaching Social Skills Or Play: The Importance Of Foundational Skills, Elizabeth Ann Bauman Jan 2018

Teaching Social Skills Or Play: The Importance Of Foundational Skills, Elizabeth Ann Bauman

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to conduct a thorough examination of the current literature related to the background, benefit and implementation of play in teaching social skills to children with autism spectrum disorders. The ability to demonstrate joint attention, demonstrate join attention and participate in functional and pretend play continues to show a correlation with children’s language, cognitive and social skills. Functional and symbolic play provide children an opportunity to practice new vocabulary, experiment with scenarios they have observed, and have social interaction. Children with autism spectrum disorders do not develop these skills easily and naturally as their typically-developing …

Finding The Gold Standard Intervention For Social Skills Deficits In Autism Spectrum Disorders, Molly Delia Hunholz

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This literature review focuses on finding research supported techniques to teach social skills to students with autism and to compare each curriculum in terms of generalization of skills, acquisition of new skills, ease of parent use, and student enjoyment. The goal of this review is to discover whether there really is a “gold standard” for social skill curriculum for students with autism or if there are many different curricula that are “gold standards” in specific skill areas. This literature review answers many questions about the way social skills are taught to students with ASD. The results lead one to ask …

Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)

The purpose of this systematic review was to investigate professional learning models (length, mode, content) offered as part of objectively measured physical childcare-based interventions. A systematic review of eight electronic databases was conducted to June 2017. Only English, peer-reviewed studies that evaluated childcare-based physical activity interventions, incorporated professional learning and reported objectively measured physical activity were included. Study designs included randomized controlled trails, cluster randomized trials, experimental or pilot studies. The search identified 11 studies. Ten studies objectively measured physical activity using accelerometers; five studies used both accelerometer and direct observation tools and one study measured physical activity using direct …

Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)

Background In sub-Saharan Africa, there is growing interest in the use of cash transfer (CT) programs for HIV treatment and prevention. However, there is limited evidence of the consequences related to CT provision to adolescents in low-resourced urban settings. We explored the experiences of adolescents receiving CTs to assess the acceptability and unintended consequences of CT strategies in urban Johannesburg, South Africa. Methods We collected qualitative data during a pilot randomized controlled trial of three CT strategies (monthly payments unconditional vs. conditional on school attendance vs. a once-off payment conditional on a clinic visit) involving 120 adolescents aged 16-18 years …

Response To Intervention Program Implementation In A Suburban Elementary School Setting, Danielle M. Kovach

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Response to Intervention (RTI) programs are designed to support students at risk of failing in school due to academic or behavioral problems. When RTI programs are applied inconsistently due to teachers' resources or knowledge, students may be wrongly identified for special education services. The purpose of this qualitative bounded descriptive case study was to explore K-4 general education teachers' experiences with RTI program implementation and the extent teachers used the RTI program in their classrooms. This study was guided by Gagné's conditions of learning theory. A purposeful sampling of 10 K-4 general education teachers, who taught an RTI program, volunteered …

The Effectiveness Of Reading Interventions For Middle School Students With Learning Disabilities, Jennifer Hicks Jan 2018

The Effectiveness Of Reading Interventions For Middle School Students With Learning Disabilities, Jennifer Hicks

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Students with learning disabilities are often unable to master reading comprehension and often fail to acquire reading comprehension skills at basic levels as measured on reading achievement assessments. Reading intervention programs Compass Learning and SRA Corrective Reading teach students how to apply strategies to their reading to improve their understanding of written text. The purpose of this quantitative ex-post facto research design was to determine the extent to which the reading intervention programs implemented at the research school improved reading achievement scores for seventh grade students with learning disabilities in reading, and to determine how much scores changed from the …
