Postsecondary Online Students' Preferences For Instructor Feedback, Joseph John Gredler Jan 2016

Postsecondary Online Students' Preferences For Instructor Feedback, Joseph John Gredler

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Misalignment between student preferences and instructor assumptions regarding feedback may impede student learning. Researchers have investigated postsecondary students' preferences for types of instructor feedback including written, audio, and video. However, postsecondary online students' preferences have not been explored in a large-sample study. This sequential explanatory mixed-methods study was conducted to describe postsecondary online students' preferences and the reasons for those preferences. Vygotsky's social-constructivist theory was used to frame instructor feedback as a scaffolding tool to promote self-regulation in student writing. A survey containing quantitative and qualitative questions was used to collect 93 responses from undergraduate and graduate students attending a …

Promoting Effective Assessment For Learning Methods To Increase Student Motivation In Schools In India, Sunddip Panesar-Aguilar, Erick Aguilar Jan 2016

Promoting Effective Assessment For Learning Methods To Increase Student Motivation In Schools In India, Sunddip Panesar-Aguilar, Erick Aguilar

Walden Faculty and Staff Publications

This qualitative study explored how using effective assessment can engage learners and motivate student learning in the Dehradun, Noida, Delhi, and Trivandrum regions in India. The study randomly sampled 26 teachers from six private schools. Private schools were used in this study since such schools allot substantial funds to support ongoing professional development. Four core themes were identified from this study. The implications derived from this study suggest that educational leaders, stakeholders, and teachers can help improve student motivation in the classroom if they involve students in assessment practices. This study provides a clear understanding of reasons why assessment can …

The Influence Of Written Formative Feedback On Student Learning In Elementary Mathematics, Sharon Faye Shrum Jan 2016

The Influence Of Written Formative Feedback On Student Learning In Elementary Mathematics, Sharon Faye Shrum

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Research has shown that giving quality feedback to students, which is an aspect of formative assessment, is a high-yield strategy that educators can use to advance academic achievement and support students in their learning process. The study took place in a Virginia school division where formative assessment was not a division-wide initiative used to increase student achievement. Therefore, the purpose of this qualitative case study was to identify the perceptions of teachers and students concerning formative feedback and distinguish the types of written feedback that may influence student learning. Bandura's social cognitive theory of self-efficacy and motivation provided the conceptual …

Maximizing Feedback For Self-Regulated Learning, Jodie Maria Hemerda Jan 2016

Maximizing Feedback For Self-Regulated Learning, Jodie Maria Hemerda

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Application of clearly defined feedback types, which have been correlated with improved student performance, has great potential for maximizing instructor use of feedback and its effect on a learner's self-regulatory learning (SRL) for optimized learning. Within SRL, where learner performance is influenced by a recursive internal process, instructional feedback plays a critical role. Yet, the characteristics of external feedback that influence SRL to improve performance are unclear in the literature. Within a theoretical framework where feedback catalyzes self-regulation, this quantitative study sought to integrate feedback type research to expand the SRL model. Data were graded assignments from 23 undergraduate level …
