The Impact Of Collaboration On Clinical Practice In Teacher Education: A Pilot Study, Christina L. Wilcoxen

This article shares one university’s work with two metropolitan districts to support preservice teachers during clinical practice through the use of a common language. The pilot merged the concept of co-teaching and coaching to the clinical practice experience. The study was completed over a year’s time and connected preservice teachers’ last methods class placement to their clinical practice placement. Preservice teachers participating in this pilot were paired with a cooperating teacher for an entire year as opposed to a semester experience. Preliminary findings yielded a positive outcome.

Fathers Speak: The Lived Experiences Of Fathers Of Adolescents With Autism Regarding Transition Planning For Their Children, Stathene Varvisotis

This phenomenological interview study was an examination of the lived experiences of seven fathers of adolescent sons with autism spectrum disorders as they transitioned out of school and into the postsecondary environment. The study was not created to deal only with fathers of sons; this population was coincidental. The purpose of the study was to gain insight into the fathers’ experiences and to determine whether commonalities existed within each father’s unique circumstances. Speech-language pathology (SLP) graduate programs offer coursework and clinical training experiences for a wide variety of communication disorder areas. Voice disorders are one area in which many practicing clinicians, particularly school-based practicing clinicians, reportedly feel a lack of professional competency. Many SLP graduate programs offer only limited coursework in voice disorders and limited or no clinical practicum experiences prior to degree completion. Semiotics: Notes On English To Mathematical Language Translation, Elliott Ostler

The manuscript at hand is a presentation relating the processes and notation of mathematics to the processes and notation of standard written English. Semiotics is introduced as a way to describe the similarities in the processes and goals of both systems as methods of communication. The discussion of semiotics falls within three categories: 1) examining the parallel structures of written language and mathematics, 2) defining the language based nature of mathematical symbols, notation, and processes, and 3) exploring misconceptions between mathematical versus standard written vocabulary and notation.

Engineering education in Nebraska schools would benefit state and national goals to educate and equip students with the critical thinking skills necessary to support, and advance, ever-growing technology-based careers. The major industries of any state rely on a knowledgeable and skilled workforce. Engineering education, as engineering itself, is the interdisciplinary use of science, mathematics, and technology. Engineering education can fully and effectively utilize the collaboration of industry and education for the purpose of developing productive citizens through a defined and supported set of standards for all students in Nebraska schools.

This is a qualitative study of beginning science and mathematics teachers involved in a comprehensive teacher induction program. The teacher induction program was striving to encourage and increase the reflection of the beginning teachers in their program. A formal reflection instrument (Plus/Delta) was used to assist the beginning science and mathematics teachers reflect on specific lessons and compare their Plus/Delta results with those of their mentors. This study compares and where appropriate, quantifies the results of both the beginning teachers and their mentors. At a time of high college student attrition rates, faculty who work in higher education settings are being challenged more than ever before with accountability for student learning. The purpose of this article is to share insights relative to a multi-year professional development initiative that provided college faculty with an opportunity to explore changes in their teaching. Over the course of three years, faculty members honed their knowledge, skills, and dispositions relative to a specific instructional strategy for their own classrooms: differentiated instruction. One of the biggest challenges facing junior faculty members at colleges and universities throughout the country is the pressure to combine teaching with service, and advising and academic research and publication. Beginning writers/researchers are faced with a delicate balancing act which contains the requirement that they not only teach and serve the community, but also that they have x amount of research completed and published each year to maintain employment and/or seek promotion and tenure at their institution. The ability for a novice teacher to confidently address inappropriate behavior has a substantial impact on student achievement, teacher attrition, and the reduction of bullying instances (Allen, 2010; Marzano, 2003).
