A review of 10 recent studies that reported on the effects of raising a child with a severe disability. The paper examines the effects of stress on parents raising a child with a severe disability, as well as outcomes for siblings being raised in the same households. Mothers reported higher daily parenting hassles and stress than did fathers. Maladaptive behaviors were the biggest contributing factor to increased stress in the family. Positive coping strategies and increased service utilization lead to decrease in stress and increase in positive outcomes.

The Effects Of Read 180 On Reading Outcomes For Secondary Students, Jessica M. Niemand

Culminating Projects in Special Education

In this starred paper, I examine the effectiveness of Read 180 on struggling readers in grades 6-12. The literature review is based on quantitative studies that were published between 2009 and 2015. Although Scholastic has published a number of studies that examine Read 180 outcomes, I did not incorporate any of these studies in Chapter 2 due to potential bias. The only information taken from Scholastic consisted of the overall structure of Read 180. All studies used in the literature review are from peer-reviewed journals or published dissertations.

The majority of the studies summarized in this paper were generated …

Cognitive Bias Modification Approaches For Adolescents With Anxiety, Catherine Trennepohl

Culminating Projects in Special Education

The question that guided this review of literature was: Are cognitive bias modification approaches effective in reducing anxiety symptoms of adolescents? Anxiety is a typical reaction to stress, but some people suffer from excessive anxiety that affect their day-to-day life. Finding an intervention that is effective in a school setting without needing trained professionals would be beneficial. Cognitive bias modification focuses on interpretive or attention biases. CBM aims to modify those biases in order to help reduce anxiety in individuals.

The Efficacy Of Restorative Practices On Reducing And Preventing Problem Behaviors In Adolescents, Zachary P. Fjelstad

Culminating Projects in Special Education

For decades, schools and juvenile detention systems in the United States and abroad have used punitive disciplinary practices such as detention, suspension, expulsion, and jail sentences to address adolescent misbehavior. These practices are considered to be retributive in that they serve as repayment to society in the case of detention and to act as “desertion” of society in the cases of suspension or incarceration” (Flanders, 2014, p. 328). Zero tolerance practices, touted by both educational and juvenile justice systems, have escalated the use of such practices. However, little evidence exists to support that these retributive practices have reduced the number …
