A Fireworks Display Of Library Instruction, Terri M. Rickel
A Fireworks Display Of Library Instruction, Terri M. Rickel
Kansas Library Association College and University Libraries Section Proceedings
Instructing students on how to use the library and the databases in one setting, especially when there is only 50 minutes, can be extremely overwhelming for the students and instructor. This session covered tips that can be used in the interview process with the professor, creating a flipped classroom or blended instruction opportunities to enhance the learning process ( including pre or post-session), as well as demonstrating guides for assisting students in database searching techniques. Finally, the session ended with ways to get buy-in from professors about tutorials and guides used outside the lessons.

Bridging The Communication Gap Successfully For Library/It Projects, Amanda Harlan, Dhanushka Samarakoon
Kansas Library Association College and University Libraries Section Proceedings
Have you ever had a difficult time describing a concept for a project? This can be especially true with collaborative projects between library and IT staff. Library and IT staff have historically been at odds concerning communication due to the use of jargon specific to their area, different working environments and styles, and conflicting best practices and standards that each follow. K-State Libraries and their internal IT department will share the communication issues with solutions from a librarian’s and developer’s perspective. We will also discuss how has influenced processes and methodologies used for collaborative projects between library and IT staff …

Transcending Institutions And Borders: 21st Century Digital Scholarship At K-State, Rebel Cummings-Sauls, Rachel Miles, Ryan Otto, Charlene N. Simser
Kansas Library Association College and University Libraries Section Proceedings
Digital scholarship of the 21st century transcends institutions and borders with its freedom from print and physical locations. This case study reviews aspects of establishing a sustainable digital scholarship center, supporting open access through the institutional repository (K-State Research Exchange - K-REx) and an open access publishing platform (New Prairie Press – NPP) along with other outreach efforts. The Center for the Advancement of Digital Scholarship (CADS) at K-State Libraries serves our campus community, but digital scholarship extends K-State's impact far beyond Manhattan, Kansas. Highlighting the scholarship at our campus is only one small piece of the landscape. Collaboration …

Can Library Research Be Fun? Using Games For Information Literacy Instruction In Higher Education, Jennifer Young
Can Library Research Be Fun? Using Games For Information Literacy Instruction In Higher Education, Jennifer Young
Georgia Library Quarterly
Collectively, the world's population spends about 3 billion hours a week playing video games. To reach game-playing audiences of all ages, educators, including library instructors, are embracing game-based learning to engage and motivate students the same way that games do. In looking at the collective wisdom on what makes a good game, and providing concrete examples of library gaming projects, this paper discusses the best practices for creating virtual and virtual-reality hybrid games for bibliographic instruction. The author explores the literature on gamification and games used for teaching information literacy in higher education, and provides recommendations gleaned from existing research …

Rethinking Assessment: Information Literacy Instruction And The Acrl Framework, Melissa J. Anderson
Rethinking Assessment: Information Literacy Instruction And The Acrl Framework, Melissa J. Anderson
School of Information Student Research Journal
Most information literacy instruction (ILI) done in academic libraries today is based on the ACRL’s Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education, but with the replacement of these standards by the new Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education, there is a need to re-evaluate current teaching strategies and instructional techniques so that they can better serve the Framework’s goals. This paper explores current trends in ILI instruction and in the area of assessment in particular, since ILI assessment provides an opportunity not only to evaluate teaching effectiveness but also to reinforce the learning goals of the new Framework …

Leveraging Our Trust: Taking Action In Support Of Our Democracy, Lori Bowen Ayre
Leveraging Our Trust: Taking Action In Support Of Our Democracy, Lori Bowen Ayre
Collaborative Librarianship
Librarians need to build on their trusted status to be more actively engaged in activities that support our democratic system whose success relies on having an informed citizenry. These activities including teaching media literacy skills to patrons in the library as well as in the schools in partnership with teachers. In addition, libraries should be facilitating community conversations and promoting a wide variety of community collaborations that get people engaged and out of their isolated bubbles.

Using Library Events And Programs To Reach Out To Patrons, Robert Lee Burgess
The Christian Librarian
"In the 2014-2015 academic year, Southwestern Libraries had significant changes in faculty and staff. We decided that our librarians would take the initiative to reach out to the students in order for the library to be more welcoming. Our ultimate goal was try to get students to see the library as a place of learning and community, and not just a place to pick up books."

Struggling Libraries Survey, The Tcl Editorial Team
The Christian Librarian
In January of 2016, the editorial team of The Christian Librarian (TCL)asked ACL members to participate in a survey entitled, “Survey on Struggling Libraries.” The intention of this survey was twofold: first, to provide an opportunity for members to share wisdom and insight with their colleagues regarding how they have made it through the challenges, and secondly, to know how we can pray for our colleagues.
Why The Acrl Framework For Information Literacy For Higher Education Enhances Information Literacy Instruction, Kathy Kempa
Why The Acrl Framework For Information Literacy For Higher Education Enhances Information Literacy Instruction, Kathy Kempa
The Christian Librarian
This article attempts to clarify what the ACRL Framework is designed to do for teaching librarians. The article looks briefly at the need for change from the Competency Standards based on librarian concerns about their own teaching effectiveness. The short description of two of the foundational books, on which the Framework was based, are introduced so that instruction librarians can do their own research into the foundational concepts of the Framework for a deeper understanding of the value of this new approach to library teaching. Links to teaching resources are included.
Using Your Library’S Objectives As The Organizational Framework For Library Documentation In Planning, Assessment, And Accreditation, Jennifer S. Ewing, Ruth E. Martin
Using Your Library’S Objectives As The Organizational Framework For Library Documentation In Planning, Assessment, And Accreditation, Jennifer S. Ewing, Ruth E. Martin
The Christian Librarian
The San Diego Christian/Southern California Seminary Library1 uses its objectives as the organizational framework for its strategic plan, annual report, assessment plan, and policies and procedures manual. This article describes how the library’s objectives compare to the Association of College and Research Libraries’ Standards (to ensure best practices), relate to the areas covered in the library strategic plan, annual report, and operations manual, and correspond to the standards and criteria from their respective accrediting agencies, showing how easy it is to identify supporting evidence for a program review or self-study when using this organizing method.
