Ouachita Baptist University senior Jason Potts was named this year’s winner of the W. Francis and Mary McBeth Wind and Percussion Concerto Competition on Dec. 9. He also took home first place in the competition last year. The competition is sponsored by Mary McBeth in honor of her late husband, W. Francis McBeth, former Arkansas composer laureate and Ouachita faculty member.

Ouachita Baptist University will host Tiger Steel in concert in Mabee Fine Art’s McBeth Recital Hall on Monday, Dec. 5, at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.

Dr. Ryan Lewis, assistant professor of music, directs the steel drum ensemble. He said he seeks to celebrate the instruments’ history by ensuring that the ensemble “performs at least 50 percent Trinidadian calypso and soca as a way to honor the nation from which the instruments originated.”

Ouachita Baptist University’s School of Fine Arts will host Ouachita alumna Deborah Caldwell in a guest trumpet recital Sunday, Nov. 20, at 8 p.m. The recital, which is free and open to the public, will be held in Mabee Fine Arts Center’s McBeth Recital Hall on Ouachita’s campus.

Caldwell graduated from Ouachita with a Bachelor of Music Education degree and studied trumpet under Dr. Craig Hamilton, Ouachita’s Lena Goodwin Trimble Professor of Music and director of bands. She has since earned her master’s degree in trumpet and currently is completing her doctorate in trumpet at the University of Georgia.

Ouachita Baptist University’s Division of Music will present “Billy Blythe,” a modern folk opera featuring music written by Bonnie Montgomery and libretto by Britt Barber, both Ouachita alumni. “Jazz is America's music. It was created here and has had an impact on both classical and popular music styles,” said Dr. Craig Hamilton, Ouachita’s Lena Goodwin Trimble Professor of Music and director of bands. “The Jazz Band at Ouachita is a lab for students to learn different styles of jazz and popular music as well as experiment with improvisation.”

Ouachita Baptist University’s Rosemary Adams Department of Visual Arts will host Lauren Teague in her senior art exhibit, “Converge.” The exhibit will be on display in Moses-Provine Hall’s Rosemary Gossett Adams Gallery from Nov. 1-15. A reception will be held Saturday, Nov. 5 at 3 p.m.

Teague is a senior graphic design major from Jonesboro, Ark. She describes her work as either bright and full of color or dark and twisted. For her senior show, Teague wanted to portray the two extremes as a spectrum.

Calvert is professor of art and the director of the Russell Fine Arts Gallery at Henderson State University. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Kent State University and his Master of Fine Arts degree in ceramics from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania.

The French comedy, written by Molière, is a satire on academic pretention, female education and precociousness. Dr. Kim, an acclaimed pianist, is a specialist in American contemporary piano music. Currently an assistant professor of piano at Ohio University, she holds a Master of Music degree from Ewha Womans University in Seoul, South Korea; a Master of Music degree from Indiana University; and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in piano performance from Ohio State University.

Ouachita Baptist University will host Arnold Rawls, a Metropolitan Opera tenor, in concert Thursday, Nov. 10, at 7:30 p.m. The concert will be held in Jones Performing Arts Center in conjunction with the Southern Region National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) conference. Tickets for guests not attending the conference are $12 each.

Rawls is an internationally known singer with a reputation of entertaining audiences through his mix of vocal and dramatic skills. His Metropolitan Opera debut as Radamès in Aida captivated the audience in 2011.

Dr. Ben Elrod, who served as Ouachita Baptist University’s 13th president from 1988 to 1998, recently was honored with the release of a biography titled Giving Until It Feels Good – Ben M. Elrod: Arkansas Educator and Fundraiser.

The 82-page biography, written by Rex Nelson and Ian Cosh, was published by WestBow Press, a division of Thomas Nelson and Zondervan. A book signing by Dr. Elrod will be held Saturday, Oct. 15, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at the Ben M. Elrod Center for Family and Community on the Ouachita campus in conjunction with Homecoming activities.

Ouachita Baptist University’s annual Ouachita Singers and Women’s Chorus fall concert will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 18, at 7:30 p.m. in Mabee Fine Arts Center’s McBeth Recital Hall located on OBU’s campus. The concert is free and open to the public. The two groups also will release their new CD, “City Called Heaven,” for sale at the concert for $15 each.

Women’s Chorus meets to practice three times a week. In addition to performing in the fall concert, the Women’s Chorus travels to local churches to sing.

Ouachita Baptist University’s Department of Theatre Arts will host its student-directed One-Act Play Festival on Thursday and Friday, May 5-6, at in Verser Theatre. Thursday’s performances will begin at 8 p.m., and Friday’s performances will begin at 7 p.m. The festival is free and open to the public.

The One-Acts are a project for students enrolled in a directing course who are working to complete a theatre degree. Ten one-act plays will be performed over the two-day festival.
