Bonding Theatre And Chemistry: An Educational Exploration, Matthew Gurniak

This paper analyzes the educational aspects of theatre and music and the impact that they have on an audience. The goal was to begin a new conversation about science and theatre and how the two can learn and gain unique insight from each other. To examine how these two antithetical fields can interact, I composed a new, innovative musical that tells the love story between two professors through the use of concepts from general chemistry. The results and responses from the performance of the play were overwhelmingly positive from members of both disciplines. They have inspired continued interest in this …

Vidigal Nights: Big Dreams In A Small Favela, Christina Thornell

This 14-minute documentary follows Tatiane and Rafa, two aspiring actors in Rio de Janeiro's favela of Vidigal in Brazil. They are both performing in “Noites de Vidigal” (Nights of Vidigal) a community play about their favela and the challenges it has faced in the last decades. As we follow Tatiane and Rafa while they rehearse and perform, viewers are offered a window into their lives and the world around them.

Tatiane and Rafa aren't just aspiring actors but community members who experience firsthand the joys and hardships of living in a favela.

While devising Suit My Heart, I relied upon my training in the ‘three A’s’ of performance studies conceived by my late mentor Dwight Conquergood as “artistry, analysis and activism” (2002: 152). With these ‘three A’s’ in mind, I set out to facilitate a devising process and create an artistic product that would positively serve all communities involved. The Ouachita Baptist University Department of Theatre Arts will present the fall play The Learned Ladies on Nov. 3-5 and 7-8 at 7:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 6.

The French comedy, written by Molière, is a satire on academic pretention, female education and precociousness. The Ouachita Baptist University and Henderson State University theatre programs are partnering to produce and perform To Kill a Mockingbird. The play is adapted by Christopher Sergel from the classic novel by Harper Lee. The show will be performed Sept. 29-Oct. 1 at 7:30 p.m. and Oct. 2 at 2:30 p.m. in OBU’s Verser Theatre and Oct. 6-8 and Oct. 10 at 7:30 p.m. in HSU’s Arkansas Hall Studio Theatre.

Changing Through Laughter With “Laughter For A Change”, Laurel J. Felt, Ed Greenberg

This paper describes systematic observation, research, and analysis of Laughter for a Change (L4C)’s 2011–2012 after-school improv workshop, revealing the program’s multiple impacts. Our data suggest that improvising creates a “safe space,” a supportive context in which participants feel empowered to take risks and play freely.

Ouachita Baptist University’s Department of Theatre Arts will host its student-directed One-Act Play Festival on Thursday and Friday, May 5-6, at in Verser Theatre. Thursday’s performances will begin at 8 p.m., and Friday’s performances will begin at 7 p.m. The festival is free and open to the public.

The One-Acts are a project for students enrolled in a directing course who are working to complete a theatre degree. Ten one-act plays will be performed over the two-day festival.

Becca and Howie had the perfect life—a great marriage, a beautiful house, and a lovely son.
