Mathematical Interactions Between Teachers And Students In The Finnish Mathematics Classroom, Paula Jeffery Prestwich
Mathematical Interactions Between Teachers And Students In The Finnish Mathematics Classroom, Paula Jeffery Prestwich
Theses and Dissertations
The Finnish school system has figured prominently in the PISA international assessments for over 10 years. Many reasons are given for Finnish success yet few of them focus on what is happening in the mathematics classroom. This study addresses the question of “What does mathematics instruction in the Finnish mathematics classroom look like?” Eight Finnish mathematics classes, from 6th – 9th grade were recorded, translated, and analyzed using the Mathematical Quality of Instruction (MQI) 2013 video coding protocol. Other aspects and observations of these classes also are discussed. Although the study is small, this study gives a view into the …

Learning To Become: An Exploration Of Transformative Faculty Development, Elizabeth Wilkins
Learning To Become: An Exploration Of Transformative Faculty Development, Elizabeth Wilkins
Theses and Dissertations
This multi-article dissertation explores the experience of becoming a professor who effectively facilitates students' identity formation. While the growing body of literature on student transformation suggests that faculty must transform themselves to authentically invite change in others, little research has been done on helping professors become mentors who facilitate students' movement toward their potential for meaningful contribution. To address this gap, this dissertation suggests a framework to facilitate transformative faculty development based on a review of the literature on learning as a process of becoming (Article #1). The major components of this framework are (a) facilitating meaningful engagement in communities …
Using Social Validity To Examine Teacher Perspectives Of Positive Behavior Intervention Support Programs: A Quasi-Replication Study, Jason Leonard Wright
Using Social Validity To Examine Teacher Perspectives Of Positive Behavior Intervention Support Programs: A Quasi-Replication Study, Jason Leonard Wright
Theses and Dissertations
This study represents a quasi-replication of Lane et al. (2009) investigation into the psychometric properties of the Primary Intervention Rating Scale (PIRS). This rating scale was designed to assess the social validity of primary to high school level Positive Behavior Support intervention plans completed by academic staff. Lane's results indicated the PIRS was a one- factor measure with strong reliability and structural validity. To substantiate these findings an adapted version of the PIRS was distributed to teachers from one Utah school district.Quantitative data and additional comments were collected from elementary and middle school teachers. The results were computed using a …
The Nature And Function Of Professional Support Networks For Teachers Of English Language Learners, Betsy Lynn Ferguson
The Nature And Function Of Professional Support Networks For Teachers Of English Language Learners, Betsy Lynn Ferguson
Theses and Dissertations
The English learner (EL) population in the United States continues to grow. To improve their pedagogy in working with this population, many educators have received training in English as a Second Language (ESL), but the gap between ELs and their native English speaking peers persists. When teachers engage as members of professional support networks, they are more likely to successfully implement the strategies learned in their ESL professional development (Echevarria, Richards-Tutor, Chinn, & Ratleff, 2011). This study considered the nature and function of the professional support network of a district's ESL-endorsed teachers. Using network theory methods, 257 teachers and other …

This study describes factor analysis approach to examine the TOSCA-3 subscales guilt, shame, and the DNA instrument of innovativeness. It also describes the measurement invariance across …
How The Hispanic Perception Of Brigham Young University Affects Its Multicultural Student Body, Jorge Encinas, Clifford Mayes
How The Hispanic Perception Of Brigham Young University Affects Its Multicultural Student Body, Jorge Encinas, Clifford Mayes
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The purpose of this project was to investigate potential for the small amount of Hispanic students that attend BYU. I noticed this when I noticed that the percentage of the student body that is of Hispanic has been lower lately. Meanwhile similar educational institutions in Utah have had an increasing percent of their student body be from Hispanic consent. Dr. Mayes and I believed that the perception that Hispanic students have of BYU might be a primary reason for why Hispanic students are not attend BYU.
Some Big Questions About Design In Educational Technology, Andrew S. Gibbons Iii
Some Big Questions About Design In Educational Technology, Andrew S. Gibbons Iii
Faculty Publications
This article asks five questions that lead us to the foundations of design practice. Design processes structure time, space, place, activity, role, goal and resource. For educational technology to advance in its understanding of design practice, it must question whether we have clear conceptions of how abstract conceptions are turned into physical artifacts capable of inspiring the intellect and the emotions to facilitate learning. These five questions hopefully supply topics for design conversations.
Academic And Peer Status In The Mathematical Life Stories Of Students, Carol Ann Wise
Academic And Peer Status In The Mathematical Life Stories Of Students, Carol Ann Wise
Theses and Dissertations
Mathematics students often define themselves by their grades, test scores, how they compare to other people, how comfortable they feel in mathematics class, and so on. These experiences are all part of a student's mathematical life story. Students assume positions with particular rights and duties for themselves and for the actors in the stories they tell. Those positions reflect certain types and levels of status. Those types and levels of status have been shown to either inhibit or open a student's access to learning mathematics. Thus, a student's status in mathematics education is an issue of equity. Mathematics educators and …

Student Evaluation Of Mathematical Explanations In Aninquiry-Based Mathematics Classroom, Ashley Burgess Hulet
Student Evaluation Of Mathematical Explanations In Aninquiry-Based Mathematics Classroom, Ashley Burgess Hulet
Theses and Dissertations
Students do not always evaluate explanations based on the mathematics despite their teacher's effort to be the guide-on-the-side and delegate evaluation to the students. This case study examined how the use of three features of the Discourse—authority, sociomathematical norms, and classroom mathematical practices—impacted students' evaluation and contributed to students' failure to evaluate. By studying three pre-service elementary school students' evaluation methods, it was found that the students applied different types of each of the features of the Discourse and employed them at different times. The way that the features of the Discourse were used contributed to some of the difficulties …

The LOOK is a viewing time measure that seeks to assess sexual interest patterns and is currently in development at Brigham Young University. This instrument is intended to aid current efforts to prevent child sexual abuse by identifying deviant sexual interests. A recently presented study on a similar viewing time measure has raised concerns regarding individuals' ability to falsify sexual interest patterns on average. This study seeks to extend this falsification research to the LOOK in order to assess if falsification of this measure is possible by means of speed or pretense. Participants were exclusively heterosexual non-pedophilic males and females. …
Principal Learning-Centered Leadership And Faculty Trust In The Principal, Shane Justin Farnsworth
Principal Learning-Centered Leadership And Faculty Trust In The Principal, Shane Justin Farnsworth
Theses and Dissertations
Principals are increasingly held accountable for student achievement outcomes. Existing research has found principal leadership indirectly affects student achievement (Leithwood, Louis, Anderson, & Wahlstrom, 2004). Principals face a problem when they are accountable for achievement outcomes and are dependent upon others and other variables to achieve those outcomes. Consequently, principals will benefit from a richer understanding of how their leadership indirectly affects student achievement. Using the Vanderbilt Assessment of Leadership in Education (VAL-ED) measurement of principal learning-centered leadership (Goldring, Porter, Murphy, Elliot, & Cravens, 2009) and the Omnibus T-Scale measurement of faculty trust in the principal (Hoy & Tschannen-Moran, 2003), …
