Ouachita Baptist University students L.B. Hudson and Evan McKinnon were recently awarded first place in the university’s seventh annual OBU Business Plan Competition. A total of $9,000 in prizes was awarded to the top three teams and their faculty advisors.

Rachel Jones has been named director of career services at Ouachita Baptist University effective Dec. 1. She succeeds Rachel Roberts who had served in that role since 2014.
Jones previously served as marketing director for Sodexo on the Ouachita campus and as a hall director and assistant director of recreational life at Ouachita. She also has held staff positions at Midwestern State University and University of the Ozarks.
As director of career services, Jones will assist students in identifying personal strengths and areas of academic and vocational interest. She will counsel individuals about effective employment search strategies including resume and …

Ouachita Baptist University’s Department of Theatre Arts will host its annual One Act Play Festival on Dec. 10-11 at 7:30 p.m. in Verser Theatre. The performances are free and open to the public.
The One-Act Play Festival is a required part of a senior level course for theatre majors. These seniors choose a play of their choosing, cast the actors and direct the plays. Auditions for these plays are open to anyone on the campus, so students from all majors have the opportunity to participate in the festival. This year’s festival includes nine different performances.

Ouachita Baptist University’s School of Fine Arts will present its 19th annual A Service of Lessons and Carols on Tuesday, Dec. 8, at 7:30 p.m. in Mabee Fine Arts Center’s McBeth Recital Hall. The service is free and open to the public.
The service is an interpretation of a tradition made popular by the Chapel at King’s College in Cambridge, England, where a service of scripture readings and communal music helps to focus the participants on the advent of Christ.

Scholars extol the virtues of crafting effective mission statements and the importance of its frequent communication. Especially in nonprofit business settings, mission statements can be an important way to provide goals and purpose for an organization’s staff. Creating and conveying mission statements to unify a staff whose tasks span a broad range is a difficult but important part of visionary leadership. This study explored mission statement dissemination at a university to understand its impact on staff whose tasks included limited academic work with students. Connecting To Students: Self-Disclosure As A Motivational Tool For Collegiate Forensic Coaches, Ben Walker

Forensic coaches spend a large amount of time with their students and often struggle to find effective methods of motivation; however, studies have shown that teachers (Christophel, 1990) and athletic coaches (Turman, 2008) can use immediacy as a way to increase student/competitor motivation. This paper examines how forensic coaches can use a specific interpersonal tactic (self-disclosure) to potentially increase student motivation. The review of literature covers self-disclosure and the link between immediacy and motivation in both educational and competitive settings; next, Petronio’s Communication Privacy Management theory is contextualized with forensic coaches; finally, suggestions are offered to forensic coaches who wish …

The Influence Of Setting On Supreme Court Religious Expression Decisions, Joseph J. Hemmer Jr.

The First Amendment prohibits any establishment of religion, a dicta that has been applied in an apparently inconsistent manner by the Supreme Court when called upon to evaluate various forms of verbal and nonverbal religious communication. Court decisions have approved religious prayers and displays in government settings. When such exercises and displays were introduced to the public school academic setting, the Court chose to disallow the practice. An examination of judicial opinions reveals that justices recognize three factors inherent to the academic setting which justify the apparently contradictory decisions. Eight Ouachita Baptist University students were named finalists at the 40th annual Southern Region National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) conference held recently at the University of Louisiana at Monroe. Among the finalists, Esther Atkinson, a sophomore musical theatre student, earned two first place awards. Susan Monroe, OBU staff accompanist, also received the James Ronald Brothers Award for Outstanding Collaborative Pianist in the southern region of NATS.

Through the lens of a participatory action research platform that I founded called The BGreen Project (BGreen), my research explores networked political economic connections that were developed as a result of this academic-community initiative. BGreen was a participatory action research platform that connected urban high school, college, university youth in an assortment of participatory/deliberative activities in the fields of education and environment. Ouachita Baptist University’s Archives and Special Collections will contribute to “Arkansas’s Reel History: A Documentary Film Festival,” hosted by the Arkansas History Commission and State Archives on Saturday, Oct. 10. The free festival will feature rare historic footage from across the state and will be held from 1-6 p.m. at the Ron Robinson Theater at 100 River Market Avenue in Little Rock.

Editor’s Note: War Room, the No. 1 movie in the nation over Labor Day weekend, is the latest faith-based film by Kendrick Brothers Productions. Three recent Ouachita Baptist University graduates served as interns on the film that was shot in North Carolina in the summer of 2014. The following article about their War Room internships was published in the fall 2014 issue of The Ouachita Circle.
