Exploring Children's Literature With Authentic Representations Of Disability, Alicja Rieger, Ewa Mcgrail

Middle and Secondary Education Faculty Publications

Given the power of children’s literature to communicate authentic representations of disability and the potential of humor for nurturing social acceptance, teachers should know how to discuss this literature in the inclusive classroom. The authors analyze authentic children’s literature with elements of humor and provide strategies in support of such critical conversations.

Exploring Different Theoretical Frontiers – A Symposium, David W. Stinson, Erika Bullock, Eric Gutstein, Indigo Esmonde, Tesha Sengupta-Irving, Danny Martin, Niral Shah, Rochelle Gutiérrez

Middle and Secondary Education Faculty Publications

Providing for a praxis of uncertainty, theoretical traditions that undercover how knowledge, power, and identity are interwoven and constituted in and through socio-cultural and -political discourses characterize the sociopolitical-turn moment in mathematics education research. Researchers who work in the sociopolitical-turn moment pull from a variety of theoretical perspectives most often located in the emancipate and/or deconstruct paradigms of inquiry. In this symposium, panelists discuss how different theoretical traditions available to researchers in the sociopolitical-turn moment provide new productive ways to think and rethink mathematics teaching and learning.

Critical Postmodern Methodology In Mathematics Education Research: Promoting Another Way Of Thinking And Looking, David W. Stinson, Erika C. Bullock Jan 2015

Critical Postmodern Methodology In Mathematics Education Research: Promoting Another Way Of Thinking And Looking, David W. Stinson, Erika C. Bullock

Middle and Secondary Education Faculty Publications

Mathematics education research over the past half century can be understood as operating in four distinct yet overlapping and simultaneously operating historical moments: the process–product moment (1970s–), the interpretivist–constructivist moment (1980s–), the social-turn moment (mid 1980s–), and the sociopolitical-turn moment (2000s–). Each moment embraces unique theoretical perspectives as it critiques or rejects others. And given that methodology is inextricably linked to theory, each moment calls forth not only different theoretical possibilities but also different methodological possibilities. In this article, the authors briefly discuss and critique the methodologies that are “traditionally” found in each moment and explore some of the methodological …

A Heritage Language Learner’S Literacy Practices In A Korean Language Course In A U.S. University: From A Multiliteracies Perspective, Jayoung Choi Jan 2015

A Heritage Language Learner’S Literacy Practices In A Korean Language Course In A U.S. University: From A Multiliteracies Perspective, Jayoung Choi

Middle and Secondary Education Faculty Publications

Drawing on multiliteracies, the author examines how a multiliteracies curriculum in a 3rdyear Korean heritage language (HL) class at a southeastern U.S. university contributed to the development of a student’s HL literacy skills. Print-based and multimodal responses (i.e., a digital animation movie) to the readings of students’ choices and language logs were aligned with the four components of a multiliteracies pedagogy (i.e., situated practice, overt instruction, critical framing, and transformative practice). The qualitative data analysis suggests that a multiliteracies curriculum helped an HL learner develop motivation to read in Korean, adopt an agentive take on Korean language learning, and form …

Teacher Education Nepantlera Work: Connecting Cracks-Between-Worlds With Mormon University Students, G. Sue Kasun Jan 2015

Teacher Education Nepantlera Work: Connecting Cracks-Between-Worlds With Mormon University Students, G. Sue Kasun

Middle and Secondary Education Faculty Publications

Teacher educators work with students of various backgrounds, often distinct from their own. This paper explores how one teacher educator examines her positionality in relation to Mormon students and how, despite not sharing their faith, she is able to work the “cracks-between-worlds” of difference and commonality toward understanding and learning. Through Anzaldúa’s concept of autohistoria-teoria, theorizing through one’s biography, the author explores and theorizes her experiences. She encourages educators to consider how they engage students, learn from other nepantleras (bridge-builders), and create more opportunities toward shared understanding while also complicating and letting go of a dogged sense of teaching students …

Exploring Web-Based University Policy Statements On Plagiarism By Research-Intensive Higher Education Institutions, Ewa Mcgrail, J. Patrick Mcgrail Jan 2015

Exploring Web-Based University Policy Statements On Plagiarism By Research-Intensive Higher Education Institutions, Ewa Mcgrail, J. Patrick Mcgrail

Middle and Secondary Education Faculty Publications

Plagiarism may distress universities in the US, but there is little agreement as to exactly what constitutes plagiarism. While there is ample research on plagiarism, there is scant literature on the content of university policies regarding it. Using a systematic sample, we qualitatively analyzed 20 Carnegie-classified universities that are “Very High in Research.” This included 15 public state universities and five high-profile private universities. We uncovered highly varied and even contradictory policies at these institutions. Notable policy variations existed for verbatim plagiarism, intentional plagiarism and unauthorized student collaboration at the studied institutions. We conclude by advising that the American Association …

Utilizing narrative inquiry, this study documents the experiences of one middle level mathematics teacher (Andrew) as he works to design mathematics lessons focused on student empowerment and power-sharing. We share snapshots of Andrew’s three-year story—a story focused on engagement, push-back, collaboration, and Andrew’s decision leave his school after three years. Implications for teacher education and support programs are shared.
