Throughout the past few years, we have attended every large national fire and rescue conference as exhibitors promoting Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s (ERAU) Bachelor degree in Emergency Services. At every event, no matter the geographical location of the conference, the gender, age, or professional status as career or volunteer, one theme was ever present in conversations: “What will I actually gain from taking academic classes?”

In collaboration with the Tax Academy of Singapore, and with the support of the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore, the Singapore Management University has launched the SMU-TA Centre for Excellence in Taxation (SMU-TA CET) today. The SMU-TA CET represents a major new initiative in research addressing international and regional tax issues and taxation policies. It is the first research centre of its kind in Singapore. The aim of the Centre is to produce highly robust research in international and regional tax issues for policy-development and engagement of the international tax community.

Hernandez, an Honors student, is the first Dominican undergraduate to receive this fellowship and one of only a few non-UC Berkeley students to be accepted into the program. The award, she said, will help her decide whether she will pursue a research-based career or medical-based career in the future. Paper from the 121st ASEE Annual Conference, Indianapolis. The George E. Brown, Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering Summation (NEES) completes its tenth year of operation in September 2014. The NEES Center consists of a network of 14 large-scale experimental laboratories that collaborate and share resources in support of research to inform civil engineering practice and reduce losses from future earthquakes. The Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) and the Singapore Management University (SMU) will establish a Centre for Technology and Social-Behavioural Insights (CTSBI) to tap on high performance computing technology, big data analytics and behavioural sciences to study people-centric issues and human behaviour including how people think, feel and act in different settings. Comparison Of Two Word Learning Techniques And The Effect Of Neighborhood Density For Late Talkers, Shari L. Deveney, Cynthia J. Cress, Robert Reid

The investigators compared two techniques for teaching expressive vocabulary to late talkers: modeling with an expectant pause and modeling with an evoked child production. They also explored the influence of neighborhood density on children’s real word learning. Three late talkers (ages 25–33 months) received two alternating vocabulary treatments (expectant pause and evoked production) in the home. Two participants were identified as having an expressive language delay, and one participant was identified as having an expressive and receptive language delay. For the past 18 months, Anita Hin, Monica Fernandez and Chelsea Prado met with first responders and focus groups and coded and analyzed data from fall incident reports. They also worked with an evaluation consultant who was hired by the Novato Fire Department supported by a grant through the County of Marin Mental Health Services Act to look at the link between depression and falls. Falls are the number one call that firefighters respond to, and the numbers are expected to rise with an increase in the elderly population.

Through The Camera Lens Of Development: An Exploration Of Ngos' Representations Of Africa, Sebastian Lindstrom

The purpose if this qualitative research is to acquire new knowledge in the African visual representational landscape, a digital space carefully filmed and edited by some of the most celebrated and acknowledged, mostly Western, NGOs in the world. The most watched Africa-related video from 50 NGOs were selected, downloaded and analyzed. After continuous re-watching of a 3.5 hour long set of visual data tree themes emerged. One segment relates around the NGOs intervention, another about the term or statement ‘help’, and the last theme is HIV/AIDS.
