Many Mississippi economic developers firmly believe that education could be the answer to the economic development of a community. However, there is a relatively small amount of research published on how the connection between education and economic development works. This is a case study of the Greater Hattiesburg Area of Mississippi which seeks to explore and to begin to understand how to better the relationship between education and economic development.

This study provides a historical analysis and review of the contemporary development of career choice orientations among Chinese college students in light of recent economic reform policies. Specifically, it describes the changes in, and developing trends of, career choice orientations in the past, present, and future among college students. This analysis reveals that with the profound transition from a centralized planned economy to a market economy in recent China, students’ career orientation has experienced a transformation from a societal standard to an individualistic standard; personal goals have changed from idealism to realism; and ideologies have developed from a unilateral structure …

The Upjohn Institute will oversee a multi-faceted research initiative assessing the impact of place-based scholarships on post-secondary attainment and local economic development. The project involves the development of an integrated database covering post-secondary enrollment and attainment in five Promise communities, a series of working papers based on this data by researchers in five Promise communities using a common analytical framework, and the development of a Web-based clearinghouse of promising practices for Promise communities that includes best-practices information on how to track the impact of Promise programs.
