For years researchers have sought to better understand how children successfully acquire literacy skills. While much attention has been paid to children’s early reading development, less attention has been paid to children’s writing development (Clay, 2001). Writing is a complex and demanding task for children (Lienemann et al., 2006). It involves a great deal of cognitive effort, attentional control, and self-regulation (Graham & Harris, 2003) as children must use and integrate a variety of skills and processes, while also attempting to make their writing meaningful for the intended audience. The purpose of this mixed method study was to explore the potential impact of degree maps on facilitating student success. The concept grew out of quantitative evidence suggesting students using degree maps are more likely to enroll in our programs, continue in our programs, register for more classes per term, and have better graduation rates than those students who do not use a degree map. Our methodology included qualitative coding of focus group responses (n = 28) then using those emerging themes to inform a survey instrument to collect student perceptions about the degree map’s impact (n = 211). The authentic leadership framework was explored within the context of U.S. small business owners to determine whether interference between gender and leader identities was an antecedent to authentic leadership and whether owner gender functions as a moderator. Additionally, associates within these small businesses were assessed to determine whether their job satisfaction and performance was an outcome of authentic leadership and whether gender identity, work identity, and identity interference function as mediators within the authentic leadership framework. Despite concerns about the importance of teachers learning to care for their students, most teacher education programs do not utilize relational pedagogy and place little emphasis on caring. In the current study, the authors used conversational interviews with one kindergarten teacher and photo-elicitation interviews with her 22 kindergarten students to explore ways in which this teacher in a public, all-girls’ school employed caring and how her students viewed being cared for. Since writing ability has been found to be an important predictor of school success and college readiness, it is important for teachers to understand the connections between students’ attitudes toward writing, writing self-efficacy, and writing achievement. This article describes the findings from focus groups conducted with 81 students in grades K-5 during which participants discussed their attitudes and self-efficacy beliefs about writing. Focusing on the power of students’ voices, this study adds a unique perspective not often found in the affective domain of writing research. Five broad themes emerged related to students’ writing attitudes including: (1) feelings about writing, (2) …

Environmental issues are a shared human concern as communities in all nations and geographic regions are grappling with environmental degradation. Despite this concern, there are multiple different viewpoints on the current state of environmental issues and how to understand these problems. Understanding how different communities conceive of the environment and sustainability is paramount in efforts to increase the frequency of environmentally conscious choices. If an awareness of others’ perspectives of the environment is lacking, then the development of sustainable choices is placed at risk because of potentially competing views of what sustainability means in a particular context. Providing children with opportunities to share their writing with others is a vital part of establishing a successful writing community. Although sharing is most often viewed as a beneficial experience for children, it is important to acknowledge that sharing can also be uncomfortable and intimidating for many young authors. This article provides tips for establishing a respectful writing community, including strategies for whole-group sharing, as well as alternative experiences for children who are reluctant to share.

Efforts to conserve and preserve the environment in developing or marginalized locales frequently involve a one-way transfer of knowledge and materials from a source in a more developed location. This situation often degenerates into a short-term donor project which risks little to no long-term impacts on local or indigenous relationships with the environment. Standards based grading is a formal assessment mechanism that tests for student achievement of specified learning objectives, or standards. Standards-Based-Grading has been gaining in popularity in K-12 education, and also has been seeing increased use in higher education. With increased pressure from ABET to measure achievement of student outcomes, Standards-Based Grading provides a method to do that within the traditional course setting without having to generate a separate set of data outside the normal course grading. We plan to make a case for the necessity of GAISE-aligned college courses in order to prepare future teachers to teach in Common Core K-12 classrooms. Beginning with an overview of the parallel evolutions of Cobb/MAA suggestions - GAISE recommendations for teaching and NCTM process standards - Common Core mathematical practices, we will emphasize that we should be modeling what researchers continually conclude are best practices for teaching/learning across the K-16 continuum. This article challenges traditional modes of spelling instruction by offering theoretically based suggestions for effectively assessing and instructing students’ spelling progress. The importance of explicit spelling instruction is presented along with differentiated strategies for students along the developmental spelling continuum and an individualized way to monitor spelling progress for elementary school students. Furthermore, the article seeks to provide teachers with strategies that help students develop an understanding of orthographic patterns and phonemic awareness skills while simultaneously avoiding the traditional “Friday Spelling Test” that so often dominates the elementary spelling curriculum.

This document defines the overall strategy to ensure that the development and more importantly the continual management of the Urban Quarter are guided by best practice sustainable policy. The strategy develops sustainability aims and outlines the strategy for the individual specific projects to collectively meet these aims. The GDA wishes to encourage innovation in the design solutions and to promote this, the strategy has been kept at a high level. The sustainability aims and relevant targets will be required to be met by design teams, stakeholders, occupants and facility managers of the Grangegorman Urban Quarter.

Inquiry can be defined practically as “an active learning process in which students answer research questions through data analysis.”2 This simple definition of inquiry is based on the National Science Educational Standards and is easy for teachers to understand. The National Research Council (NRC) identifies the scientific practices that support inquiry and that students should be engaged in, including: question generation, experimental design, data analysis, creating explanations, argumentation, and communicating results.3 The investigations created encourage inquiry and require students to develop their scientific practices skills.

This chapter investigates faculty expectations for student writing, specifically L2 writers of English, across disciplines at a flagship university and an urban community college in the southwest. Drawing from a faculty survey and follow-up interviews with faculty from various disciplines, the authors argue that study participants tend to hold multilingual writers to a monolingual standard, but that they are conflicted and/or ambivalent about this practice. The survey and interview data show, first, that markers of nonnative speaker status or any features that depart from Standard American Academic English often discourage and even preclude engagement with higher order concerns like ideas …

Recently, there has been an increased interest in using behavioral experiments to study hypotheses on the governance of social-ecological systems. A diversity of software tools are used to implement such experiments. We evaluated various publicly available platforms that could be used in research and education on the governance of social-ecological systems. The aims of the various platforms are distinct, and this is noticeable in the differences in their user-friendliness and their adaptability to novel research questions. Two pivotal and interconnected claims are addressed in this article. First, strategy precedes program effectiveness. Second, graduation rates and rankings are insufficient in any account of academic progress for African American students. In this article, graduation is regarded as the floor and not the ceiling, as it were. The ideal situation in the promotion of strategy is the alignment of high graduation rates or rankings with high graduation cumulative grade point averages.
