Dietary and physical activity habits are developed early in life and are influenced by family environments. We describe and evaluate an intervention for low-income families to encourage healthy habits. The RD Parent Empowerment Program (http://www.eatright.org/programs/kidseatright/activities/content.aspx?id=6442477891) consists of four workshops centered on the 8 Habits of Healthy Children and Families (Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation). Registered dietitian nutritionists conduct the workshops in school and community settings using a structured leader guide and tailor the communication and interactive activities to the audience. Participants are parents of young children. Our goals were to use a phenomenologic approach to elicit participant …

Exploring Differences In Practicing Teachers’ Valuing Of Pedagogical Knowledge Based On Teaching Ability Beliefs, Helenrose Fives, Michelle M. Buehl Nov 2014

Exploring Differences In Practicing Teachers’ Valuing Of Pedagogical Knowledge Based On Teaching Ability Beliefs, Helenrose Fives, Michelle M. Buehl

Department of Educational Foundations Scholarship and Creative Works

In this investigation, we assessed 443 teachers’ beliefs with the Teaching Ability Belief Scale (TABS) and the Importance of Teaching Knowledge Scale (ITKS). Using cluster analysis, we identified four groups of teachers based on their responses to the TABS reflecting Innate, Learned, Hybrid, and Requires Polish perspectives on the ability to teach. A comparative analysis, using the identified clusters, indicated differences in teachers’ valuing of teaching knowledge across the clusters. Teachers in the Learned cluster valued knowledge of theory significantly more so than other groups.

Academic Identity Formation And Motivation Among Ethnic Minority Adolescents: The Role Of The "Self" Between Internal And External Perceptions Of Identity, Jamaal Matthews, Meeta Banerjee, Fani Lauermann Nov 2014

Academic Identity Formation And Motivation Among Ethnic Minority Adolescents: The Role Of The "Self" Between Internal And External Perceptions Of Identity, Jamaal Matthews, Meeta Banerjee, Fani Lauermann

Department of Educational Foundations Scholarship and Creative Works

Identity is often studied as a motivational construct within research on adolescent development and education. However, differential dimensions of identity, as a set of internal values versus external perceptions of social belonging, may relate to motivation in distinct ways. Utilizing a sample of 600 African American and Latino adolescents (43% female; mean age = 13.9), the present study examines whether self-regulated learning (SRL) mediates two distinct dimensions of academic identity (i.e., value and belonging) and mastery orientation. This study also examines whether self-efficacy moderates the mediating role of SRL between identity and mastery. Results show evidence for moderated mediation between …

Vicarious Posttraumatic Growth And Attachment Style In Mental Health Professionals, Claire J. Wooloff Aug 2014

Vicarious Posttraumatic Growth And Attachment Style In Mental Health Professionals, Claire J. Wooloff

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Mental health professionals treating clients who are trauma survivors spend many hours listening to traumatic material. The impact of this material may affect the individual in different ways. Some of the negative effects are documented in the literature as vicarious traumatization (Pearlman & Saakvitne, 1995), compassion fatigue (Figley, 1995, 2002) and burnout (Baird & Jenkins, 2003). However, mental health professionals also attest to the positive side of their work including posttraumatic growth (Arnold, Calhoun, Tedeschi & Calhoun, 2005) and compassion satisfaction (Stamm, 2010). Little is known about why some individuals may be impacted negatively, but others experience psychological growth. Attachment …

Developing A Measure Of Scientific Literacy For Middle School Students, Helenrose Fives, Mark Nicolich, Amanda Birnbaum, Wendy Huber

Department of Public Health Scholarship and Creative Works

Scientific literacy reflects “a broad and functional understanding of science for general education purposes” (DeBoer, 2000, p. 594). Herein, we present the ongoing development of the Scientific Literacy Assessment (SLA), a work‐in‐progress measure to assess middle school students' (ages 11–14) scientific literacy. The SLA includes a selected response measure of students’ demonstrated scientific literacy (SLA‐D) and a motivation and beliefs scale based on existing measures of self‐efficacy, subjective task value, and personal epistemology for science (SLA‐MB). Our theoretical conceptualization of scientific literacy guided the development of our measure. We provide details from three studies: Pilot Study 1 (n = …

Best Practices In Clinical Supervision: Evolution Of A Counseling Specialty, Harriet L. Glosoff, L. Dianne Borders, Laura E. Welfare, Danica G. Hays, Lorraine Dekruyf, Delini M. Fernando, Betsy Page

Department of Counseling Scholarship and Creative Works

A number of developments have marked the evolution of clinical supervision as a separate specialty since publication of the Standards for Counseling Supervisors in 1990, including accreditation and counselor licensure standards, supervisor credentials, and research on supervision practice and supervisor training, nationally and internationally. Such developments culminated in the development of a statement of Supervision Best Practices Guidelines. The Guidelines are described, followed by suggestions for their implementation and further evolution through research.

Pregnant Teens In Foster Care: Concepts, Issues, And Challenges In Conducting Research On Vulnerable Populations, Lisa D. Lieberman, Linda L. Bryant, Kenece Boyce, Patricia Beresford

Department of Public Health Scholarship and Creative Works

Teens in foster care give birth at over twice the rate of other teens. Unique challenges exist for these vulnerable teens and babies, yet research on such populations, particularly within the systems that serve them, is limited. A demonstration project at Inwood House, a residential foster care agency in New York City, from 2000 to 2005, at the same time that the Administration for Children's Services was exploring policy and practice changes for this population, is described. Research design and implementation issues, descriptive data, and experiences provide lessons for improving the evidence base to meet the needs of pregnant teens …

De-Territorializing The Child : Towards A Theory Of Affect In Educational Philosophy And Research, Marta Pires May 2014

De-Territorializing The Child : Towards A Theory Of Affect In Educational Philosophy And Research, Marta Pires

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

This dissertation explores the paradox between the normalizing and equalizing purpose of public education, stated in the rhetoric of policy and politics, and the social gaps it actually produces and perpetuates. The purpose of the study is to deterritorialize the ideal rational child of formal education and policy texts by juxtaposing it with the affective child found at the margin, outside of the rational regime of perception that permeates policy, and political discourse. I discuss what I believe are instances of children’s deterritorialized/ing experiences often missed, not only by formal education, but also by policy writers across the board, and …

College Students' Perceived And Personal Mental Health Stigma : The Influence On Help-Seeking Attitudes And Intentions, Alyson M. Pompeo May 2014

College Students' Perceived And Personal Mental Health Stigma : The Influence On Help-Seeking Attitudes And Intentions, Alyson M. Pompeo

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Despite being vulnerable to mental health problems, college students are a population that is especially influenced by perceptions of peer mental health stigmatization (Quinn, Wilson, MacIntyre, & Tinklin, 2009), a known barrier to seeking mental health services (Corrigan, 2004a; Komiya, Good, & Sherrod, 2000; Vogel, Wade, & Haake, 2006), and the greatest barrier to college students (Evans, et al., 2007; Hepworth & Paxton, 2007; Martin, 2010). This paper begins with a thorough discussion of the participant population—undergraduate college students, including well established theories of college student development, and developmental challenges and issues that are faced. Mental health stigma is also …

Becoming-Teacher : The Negotiation Of Teaching Practice Of First-Year Secondary Science Teachers Prepared In A Hybrid Urban Teacher Education Program, Kathryn Jill Strom May 2014

Becoming-Teacher : The Negotiation Of Teaching Practice Of First-Year Secondary Science Teachers Prepared In A Hybrid Urban Teacher Education Program, Kathryn Jill Strom

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

While research suggests that new teachers work to put into practice the pedagogy learned from their preservice preparation programs during their first year of teaching, they often resort to traditional, teacher-centered pedagogies even when prepared to use innovative practices, particularly in urban schools. Relatively little is known, however, about how this process of perpetuating traditional teaching occurs. Using a theoretical framework informed by equity-minded pedagogy and rhizomatics, this study investigates the question, “Given their common experiences of preservice preparation in a hybrid urban teacher education program, how do three first-year teachers negotiate their preprofessional learning within their new environments as …

The Relationship Between Perceived Career Barriers And Career Decision Self-Efficacy On The Certainty Of Initial Career Choice Among Educational Opportunity Fund Program Students, Nicole Pacheco Pulliam

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

This study was an investigation of the predictive value of perceived career barriers and career decision self-efficacy on the certainty of initial career choice among Educational Opportunity Fund Program (EOF) pre-freshman college students, an under-studied college population with respect to career development (Winograd & Shick Tryon, 2009). The moderating effects of certain cultural characteristics (race, gender and college generational status) on the certainty of initial career choice were also examined. A nonexperimental correlational research design was utilized, along with a multiple linear regression analysis, to investigate the predictability of perceived career barriers and career decision self-efficacy, directly and as moderated …

The Impact Of Academic Advising Using A Learning Centered Model On The College Experience And Advisor/Advisee Relationships Among Traditional-Aged College Freshmen, Sarah Vandermark

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Academic advising is becoming an increasingly important resource on college campuses for purposes of retention, persistence, and student satisfaction. Researchers have found that an academic advisor can play a key role in the academic and personal lives of undergraduate students. If engagement with students matters for learning and persisting towards graduation, then there is a need to identify and evaluate quality academic services, including academic advising, and what are effective methods to enhance student learning and acclimating to a university. In this study, I focused on academic advising using the learning centered approach to advising, which was implemented through a …

Multiple Pathways To Identification: Exploring The Multidimensionality Of Academic Identity Formation In Ethnic Minority Males, Jamaal Matthews Apr 2014

Multiple Pathways To Identification: Exploring The Multidimensionality Of Academic Identity Formation In Ethnic Minority Males, Jamaal Matthews

Department of Educational Foundations Scholarship and Creative Works

Empirical trends denote the academic underachievement of ethnic minority males across various academic domains. Identity-based explanations for this persistent phenomenon describe ethnic minority males as disidentified with academics, alienated, and oppositional. The present work interrogates these theoretical explanations and empirically substantiates a multidimensional lens for discussing academic identity formation within 330 African American and Latino early-adolescent males. Both hierarchical and iterative person-centered methods were utilized and reveal 5 distinct profiles derived from 6 dimensions of academic identity. These profiles predict self-reported classroom grades, mastery orientation, and self-handicapping in meaningful and varied ways. The results demonstrate multiple pathways to motivation and …

The majority of questions asked about sexuality and sexual behavior, or anatomy and physiology, with fewer questions about pregnancy and pregnancy prevention, sexually transmitted infections, and condoms. Overall, a notable mix was found of questions implying exposure to or awareness of a wide range of sexual activities, together with questions demonstrating fundamental misunderstandings or confusion about some of the most basic aspects of sex and sexuality. Gender differences emerged across topics, subtopics, and question …

Neoteny, Dialogic Education And An Emergent Psychoculture: Notes On Theory And Practice, David Kennedy Feb 2014

Neoteny, Dialogic Education And An Emergent Psychoculture: Notes On Theory And Practice, David Kennedy

Department of Educational Foundations Scholarship and Creative Works

This article argues that children represent one vanguard of an emergent shift in Western subjectivity, and that adult-child dialogue, especially in the context of schooling, is a key locus for the epistemological change that implies. Following Herbert Marcuse's invocation of a 'new sensibility', the author argues that the evolutionary phenomenon of neoteny-the long formative period of human childhood and the pedomorphic character of humans across the life cycle-makes of the adult-collective of school a primary site for the reconstruction of belief. After exploring child-adult dialogue more broadly as a form of dialectical interaction between what Dewey called 'impulse' and 'habit', …

Recommendations for counseling, including an illustrative case example, are provided.

Gender Processes In School Functioning And The Mediating Role Of Cognitive Self-Regulation, Jamaal Matthews, Loren M. Marulis, Amanda P. Williford Jan 2014

Gender Processes In School Functioning And The Mediating Role Of Cognitive Self-Regulation, Jamaal Matthews, Loren M. Marulis, Amanda P. Williford

Department of Educational Foundations Scholarship and Creative Works

The catalysts for gender discrepancies across developmental outcomes are widely debated. This study examines cognitive self-regulation (CSR) as a mechanism for understanding gender differences in scholastic performance-both subjective school functioning and objective standardized achievement. Utilizing a national sample from the NICHD SECCYD (n= 1364), not only does CSR (i.e., attention and executive function) in 3rd grade mediate the relation between early mother-child interactions (at 54. months) and scholastic outcomes (in 5th grade), but it also predicts gender discrepancies favoring girls in grades, work persistence and socio-emotional development. Additional exploratory evidence suggests quality mother-child interactions may be more meaningful for girls' …

There was het-erogeneity in the school transition patterns of African American boys, with many showing stability frompreschool to kindergarten. Family income and parenting …

The Procedurally Directive Approach To Teaching Controversial Issues, Maughn Gregory Jan 2014

The Procedurally Directive Approach To Teaching Controversial Issues, Maughn Gregory

Department of Educational Foundations Scholarship and Creative Works

Recent articles on teaching controversial topics in schools have employed Michael Hand's distinction between "directive teaching," in which teachers attempt to persuade students of correct positions on topics that are not rationally controversial, and "nondirective teaching," in which teachers avoid persuading students on topics that are rationally controversial. However, the four methods of directive teaching discussed in the literature - explicit directive teaching, "steering," "soft-directive teaching," and "school ethos endorsement" - make rational persuasion problematic, if not self-defeating. In this essay, Maughn Rollins Gregory argues that "procedurally directive teaching" offers an alternative to such approaches because it derives from the …

Using A Table Of Specifications To Improve Teacher-Constructed Traditional Tests: An Experimental Design, Nicole Barnes, Helenrose Fives, Emily S. Krause Jan 2014

Using A Table Of Specifications To Improve Teacher-Constructed Traditional Tests: An Experimental Design, Nicole Barnes, Helenrose Fives, Emily S. Krause

Department of Educational Foundations Scholarship and Creative Works

We investigated if instruction on a Table of Specifications (TOS) would influence the quality of classroom test construction. Results should prove informative for educational researchers, teacher educators, and practising teachers interested in evidenced-based strategies that may improve assessment-related practices. Fifty-three college undergraduates were randomly assigned to an experimental (exposed to the TOS strategy) and a comparison condition (no specific strategy support) and given materials for an instructional unit to use to construct a classroom test. Results of a multivariate analysis of covariance suggested that students exposed to the TOS strategy constructed a test with higher test content evidence but not …

Abc Analysis For Inventory Management: Bridging The Gap Between Research And Classroom, Handanhal Ravinder, Ram B. Misra Jan 2014

Abc Analysis For Inventory Management: Bridging The Gap Between Research And Classroom, Handanhal Ravinder, Ram B. Misra

Department of Management Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

ABC analysis is a well-established categorization technique based on the Pareto Principle for determining which items should get priority in the management of a company's inventory. In discussing this topic, today's operations management and supply chain textbooks focus on dollar volume as the sole criterion for performing the categorization. The authors argue that today's businesses and supply chains operate in a world where the ability to deliver the right products rapidly to very specific markets is key to survival. With suppliers, intermediaries, and customers all over the globe, and product lives decreasing rapidly, this focus on a single criterion is …
