This literacy project investigated the impact of small group reading instruction on the reading ability of first graders. During fall 2012, the teacher candidate conducted research in a first grade classroom in a rural East Texas elementary school three days a week for an eight-week period. One purpose of this literacy project was to enable teacher candidates to gain experience conducting reading assessments, planning age appropriate reading lessons, and implementing those lessons in a small group instructional setting. Another purpose was to administer pre and post assessments to monitor the reading development of a group of students.

This study investigated the impact of guided reading for 30 minutes three days a week for eight weeks on the reading achievement of three second grade students in a rural school district in East Texas during fall 2012. Within the investigation, the students were scored using three reading assessments. These assessments were used to inform the teacher candidate of the students' potential reading levels. The goal was to show an increase in the students' reading level with the assistance of guided reading instruction.

Poverty is an epidemic that is affecting millions of students in the United States. This literature review reports on issues pertaining to middle level students and how these students are affected by poverty. We examined 10 resources, including education books and empirical articles in academic journals, to report on findings and make recommendations for middle level educators about how to improve a child’s chances of rising above poverty.
