The Leadership Orientations And Effectiveness Of College And University Career Services Directors, Jacob A. Livengood
The Leadership Orientations And Effectiveness Of College And University Career Services Directors, Jacob A. Livengood
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Career service directors lead the third most common division within student affairs departments, but the leadership of a collegiate career services office has not been represented in higher education research. Obtaining a "good job" has consistently been noted as a main reason to attend college (Pryor, Hurtado, Saenz, Santos & Korn, 2007). The rising costs of higher education have also yielded the question, "What can college do for me?" financially and with future career opportunities (Baum & Payea, 2005; Moretti, 2004; Pryor, Hurtado, Saenz, Santos & Korn, 2007; Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education, 2009). The functions of career services …
The Importance Of Incorporating Personal Finance Objectives In The College Classroom, Teri G. Allen
The Importance Of Incorporating Personal Finance Objectives In The College Classroom, Teri G. Allen
Administrative Issues Journal
It has been well documented that many college students have an alarmingly low level of financial literacy. These students have insufficient knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors relating to personal financial management. The recent economic crisis further illustrated that many young adults are not financially prepared to cope with the financial reality of being selfsufficient. Many states have implemented requirements for personal finance education in high school, and some colleges have included personal finance as a general-education requirement. However, studies have shown that levels of awareness of personal finance issues still vary greatly by major, student motivation, and financial background. This paper …

All Dissertations
High-risk drinking is an endemic health and safety issue for college campuses in the United States (U.S.). While public health officials have recommended various models for campus alcohol prevention efforts, in 2008 a group of college presidents recommended a controversial strategy: reconsidering the U.S. minimum legal drinking age (MLDA). The primary purpose of this study was to explore how Chief Student Affairs Officers (CSAOs) describe the impact of the Minimum Legal Drinking Age (MLDA) on high-risk drinking and alcohol-related issues on college and university campuses. The secondary purpose was to describe the impact of the Amethyst Initiative (AI), the aforementioned …

Generativity In Young Adults: Comparing And Explaining The Impact Of Mentoring, Lindsay J. Hastings

Parental Involvement In The Lives Of College Students: Impact On Student Independence, Self-Direction, And Critical Thinking, Patrick Thomas Spence

Recent studies have noted the increasing communication between parents and students while students are in college (College Parent, 2007; Hofer & Moore, 2010). The most recent study noted that the interaction between parent and student during the last year of college averages over 13 times a week (Hofer & Moore, 2010). While many articles in the popular press have offered conjecture as to the developmental impact of this new data, very little has been done to understand the nature of the contact between parents and students as it relates to developmental outcomes (Carroll, 2005; Hoover, 2008). This study provides insight …

An Investigation Of The Feasability Of A Writing Center At Olivet Nazarene University: The Implementation Of A Pilot Program, Kristy Ingram, Beth Olney, Sue Rattin, Sue Williams
An Investigation Of The Feasability Of A Writing Center At Olivet Nazarene University: The Implementation Of A Pilot Program, Kristy Ingram, Beth Olney, Sue Rattin, Sue Williams
Scholarship – Academic Affairs Office
The implementation of an on-campus Writing Center is an extension of the holistic approach to student success and retention. Previous attempts to provide an online resource at Olivet Nazarene University (ONU) failed to meet the need of providing one-on-one tutorials. Research proves that this approach does not teach the student how to identify and correct gaps in writing thought, organization, and voice. An ONU Writing Center must be more than an editing center, serving more students than those with remedial writing skills. It should serve as a consistent presence on campus as a facilitator of quality writing across the disciplines. …
