At the University of Massachusetts Amherst, instructors are increasingly utilizing active,group, and participatory teaching methods and are offering students opportunities to opt into more creative assignments requiring the use of advanced technologies in support of multimedia projects. Traditionally, video projects would be expected from discourses such as Film Studies, Journalism and Communications students; the insurgence of this type of multimedia project has come to subjects from Anthropology to History, and the incoming required Freshman Writing course now has a built-in unit which specifically invites writing and research in a variety of technological media outside of the traditional research paper. Umass-Amherst Open Education Initative: A Grant Incentive Program For Faculty To Create Free Textbooks, Matthew Sheridan, Sarah Hutton, Charles Schweik

To combat the rising cost of textbooks, the University Libraries and Provost funded ten $1,000 grants for faculty who would replace their current textbook with one that would be openly accessible and free. The end result of this program will see nearly 700 students affected by these new textbooks for a recurring savings of over $72,000. In this session the challenges and opportunities of using open educational resources and library materials to replace traditional print textbooks will be discussed from a faculty point of view, as well as this program’s impact on the student learning experience. Sarah and Rachel will discuss the broad range of techniques utilized to gather data for the development of student learning spaces in the W.E.B. Du Bois Library. While libraries have been becoming more adept at gathering qualitative and quantitative data, an abundance of information can be challenging when it comes to the application of the results. Supporting the active learning process of the 21st century student is one of the main goals of the Learning Commons at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Building and maintaining effective student learning spaces and academic services requires proactive assessment of University climate, pedagogical direction, and curriculum development.
