Examination Of Self-Determination Within The Sport Education Model, Dana Perlman

The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of the Sport Education Model (SEM) on students’ self-determined motivation and underlying psychological need(s) in physical education. A total of 182 Year-9 students were engaged in 20 lesson units of volleyball, using either the SEM or a traditional approach. Data was collected using a pretest/posttest design measuring self-determined motivation and perceptions of the psycho-social climate. Analysis of data utilized four separate repeated measures ANOVAs for self-determination and basic psychological needs. Results indicated significant change in self-determination and relatedness for students engaged in the SEM. As such, implementation of the SEM …

Although self-concept is now recognised as a multidimensional construct, unidimensional measurement is still common practice for adults with mild intellectual disabilities. For this study, two groups of adults with intellectual disabilities were chosen from two institutions. One group were being prepared to move to community living (Movers) and the other group were staying at their residential service (Stayers). All of the participants had an IQ within the range of 56-75 for those with mild intellectual disability and within the range of 45- 56 for those with mild-moderate intellectual disability. Research has found that when people with intellectual disabilities are moved from institutions into smaller community-based services, positive outcomes have been recorded. However, positive outcomes have not been inevitable. It is now recognised that mere placement in the community is not always sufficient. Individual characteristics of clients and the nature of services received in the community may be very significant to maintaining normalisation and social role valorisation. This study reported the design and implementation of an interpersonal cognitive problem-solving intervention to increase the social skills of people with intellectual disabilities whose community placement was considered vulnerable because they exhibited challenging behaviours. The study used a single subject multiple baseline methodology to assess the impact of the intervention. However, a novel feature of the intervention was the emphasis on generalisation to the community setting and maintenance over time. As part of the assessment procedures pre- and post-test measures were taken on self esteem, problem-solving self-concept, locus of control and real life behaviours related to socialisation and self-direction. Hiv/Aids Identity Incorporation And The Temporal Context, Lisa M. Baumgartner

The purpose of this study was to examine how the temporal context affected the incorporation of the HIV/AIDS identity into the self. In-depth interviews were conducted with 36 individuals living with HIV/AIDS. Chronological age shaped the initial reaction to the diagnosis whereas historical time did not. Social time affected immersion in the HIV/AIDS community and the passage of time influenced the integration of the HIV/AIDS identity into the self. These findings have implications for health educators.

This paper presents a work-in-progress exploring how learners can manage their own cognitive load through the use of computer-based tools. Cognitive load refers to the amount of mental processing undertaken in working memory by a learner. Cognitive Load Theory (CLT) has identified evidence-based design principles that inform the development of instructional materials to support the efficient use of working memory. Much of the CLT research has focused on how to present learners with optimally designed learning materials. Rationale: Australian asthma rates are high by international standards causing greatest mortality amongst older adults.

This paper looks at the relationships between perceived self-efficacy (belief in oneself) to manage the physical discomfort or pain caused by asthma and also the emotional distress caused by asthma and: reported health status; asthma quality of life for both mood and breathlessness; asthma management practices; and emergency health care use for asthma in adults aged 55 years and over.

Methods: A 20 page survey exploring the health beliefs, behaviours and attitudes of older Australians, was mailed to 9,000 people, (response rate = 46.8%). Participants …
