Enacting Social Justice: Perceptions Of Educational Leaders, Linda R. Vogel
Enacting Social Justice: Perceptions Of Educational Leaders, Linda R. Vogel
Administrative Issues Journal
This qualitative study examines how educators who are either currently enrolled or who have completed an educational leadership preparation program in the past five years at one Rocky Mountain university understand social justice—as a concept and operationally—and the role of multicultural education in promoting social justice in P-12 school settings. Less than half (44%) of the educational leaders in this study were familiar with the concept of social justice, with those leaders who were familiar with the concept identifying full and equal participation (17%) and equal distribution of resources (11%) as the focus of school programs. Less than one third …
To Be Or Not To Be...A School Leader: Motivators Of Educational Administration Candidates, Gerald Beach, Kay Anne Keiser
To Be Or Not To Be...A School Leader: Motivators Of Educational Administration Candidates, Gerald Beach, Kay Anne Keiser
Educational Leadership Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
Leading a school presents unique opportunities and obstacles to the individuals who may aspire to become a principal. The balance between incentives and disincentives to seek building leadership is currently shifting as the pool of qualified candidates willing to assume positions in school leadership is growing smaller (Browne-Ferrigno, 2003; Carr & Million, 2010; Sava, 1998). At the same time, record numbers of school administrators are now reaching retirement age; so many school districts are finding it increasingly difficult to fill vacancies (Howley, Andrianaivo, & Perry, 2005).
Strong leadership by the principal is a crucial ingredient in school improvement (Berry, 2009; …

Assessing Edad Candidate's Leadership Growth And Perceptions: Ethical Principles And Acting Fairly, Jeanne L. Surface
Educational Leadership Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
Moral and ethical leadership has evolved over the years, and while early standards were often religious in nature, many standards remain. Every year principals are terminated for immoral activities, failure to assume leadership obligations, or breaches of ethics. Because of the critical role that principals play in school and community leadership, preparation programs should teach and assess principal candidates' dispositions such as fairness and integrity. This paper is an analysis of educational administration student growth using an electronic portfolio system to measure self-perceptions of readiness to implement the Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium (ISLLC) Standards and self-perceptions of dispositions of …
Communicative Functions Of Repair On Nigerian Students’ Participation In Computer Studies, Alaba Agbatogun
Communicative Functions Of Repair On Nigerian Students’ Participation In Computer Studies, Alaba Agbatogun
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal
Doctorate programs in educational leadership have been criticized in recent years for failing to prepare their graduates to effectively serve as instructional leaders in the nation’s schools. Criticisms have included ambiguity of purpose and research foci, weak admission and graduation requirements, irrelevant curriculum, and the lack of applied practice. The purpose of this study was to analyze specific characteristics of thirteen highly ranked applied doctorate programs in educational leadership. Findings revealed that touchstone doctorate programs display many of the features that have been criticized, and that they are largely similar in structure and foci to lower ranked programs.

A Comparison Of Four Frameworks Of Teacher Leadership For Model Fit, Corey Alan Dehart
A Comparison Of Four Frameworks Of Teacher Leadership For Model Fit, Corey Alan Dehart
Doctoral Dissertations
Research has shown that effective school leadership has a positive influence on school effectiveness and student achievement. Current reform efforts include teachers, both formally and informally, as leaders of schools. However, there are currently no widely-accepted measurements or models to assess both formal and informal teacher leadership in schools. The purpose of this study was to compare model fit for the four-factor model of teacher leadership to model fit for three alternative models. The four-factor model was developed during the second administration of the Teacher Leadership Inventory (TLI), and the three alternative models were developed from the results and recommendations …

Kandel (1881–1965) is the most widely recognized leader and founder of modern comparative education. He asserted that the direction of education in democratic nations ought to be “borrowed and adjusted” within the cultural context of each nation. He further argued that, “so many of the problems in education are today common to most countries; in their solution certain common principles . . . are involved; the practical outcomes may, however, differ because of differences in tradition, in social and political principles, and in cultural standards”(Kandel, 1936, p. 401). As Kandel (1933) suggested, the problems and purposes of education have in …
The Concept Of Educational Leadership: Exploring Macro-Level Facets, Chetan Sinha
The Concept Of Educational Leadership: Exploring Macro-Level Facets, Chetan Sinha
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal
At the dawn of the twenty first century, there is anticipation for better educational reforms both at the structural and functional level. Heck and Hallinger (2005) have observed that although various disciplinary and interdisciplinary movements, in their attempt to understand the history of educational leadership, have critically approached the issue; at a practical level all efforts still reside in the same individualistic resort. Authors have cited ample research dictating the processes of leadership in organizations both at individual and collective level (Bass, 1990; Knipe & Maclay, 1972; Heine, 1971; Hogg, 2001; Sinha, 1980; Yukl, 1998, 2002) however, in the arena …
Educational Leadership And School Culture: A Study Of The Perceptions Of Effective Leadership, Pearly Milton
Educational Leadership And School Culture: A Study Of The Perceptions Of Effective Leadership, Pearly Milton
All Dissertations
Effective leadership has been cited as essential for creating and sustaining effective schools. Selecting, assigning, and retaining such leaders is a difficult task at best. Characteristics and/or skills deemed essential for effective leaders have been identified by researchers; however, many of our schools continue to produce results that are less than desirable. In addition, leaders who may be effective in one setting may not be in another. Research indicates organizational/school culture may be a contributing factor to the success of these leaders. Moreover, research indicates culture may have an impact on the characteristics perceived as effective/ineffective leadership attributes within these …
Self-Directed Learning And The Impact Of Leadership: Analyzing Keys For Success From A Covenental Perspective, David Duby, Kahlib J. Fischer
Self-Directed Learning And The Impact Of Leadership: Analyzing Keys For Success From A Covenental Perspective, David Duby, Kahlib J. Fischer
Faculty Publications and Presentations
The current state of education seems to beg for visionary changes to truly impact students and prepare them for the future. Self-directed learning models purport to do just that, by preparing students to be self-motivated, lifelong learners. While many educators seek to apply self-directed practices, research reveals that there are several obstacles that can hinder self-directed learning. Duby’s 2006 study of schools employing self-directed learning investigated how leaders successfully overcome these hindrances via specific leadership attitudes and behaviors that not only effectively overcame these obstacles, but are also reflected in the covenantal perspective of leadership. Using content analysis, this paper …

Teacher Reflection Among Professional Seminary Faculty In The Seminaries And Institutes Department Of The Church Educational System, Ryan S. Gardner
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This qualitative study aimed at exploring and explaining the practices and processes of teacher reflection among a group of professional secondary-level religious educators in the Church Educational System of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as well as seeking to understand the perceived impact of those reflective practices on the professional development of these teachers. The researcher described, analyzed, and interpreted the data to develop a mid-range grounded theory for explaining the process of teacher reflection in a way that could lead to the improvement of teacher reflection among these teachers as an integrated function of professional development. …
It's A Matter Of Principal: Examining Relationships Between Leaders' Change Facilitator Style And Students' Academic Progress, Diane Lewis
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
At no other time in the history of American education have school principals been faced with as many challenges as today. The era of accountability has increased the daily pressures of leading a school, while responsibility for student achievement is at an all time high.
Some studies have examined a leaders’ impact on teacher behaviors. Fewer studies have examined the possible impacts that principals have on student learning. In this study, leadership research was reviewed; not only in education, but in business, sports, and other fields. The traits and styles of leaders were explored in an attempt to define the …
Resilient Leadership In High Poverty Schools, Edward P. San Nicolas
Resilient Leadership In High Poverty Schools, Edward P. San Nicolas
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Children in high poverty schools often receive inadequate services in dilapidated facilities while enduring inexperienced and unprepared educators (Darling-Hammond, 2004). Communities with a dense impoverished population in turn create school wide poverty, which is ultimately more detrimental than individual family poverty (Books, 2004). With most teachers leaving impoverished urban schools within the first five years, it is no surprise of the difficulty to retain qualified and professional school leaders. As suggested by Haberman (2005), attracting educators with specific qualities to fill these critical roles may be the best route to lasting success. Equally important is the possibility to transform existing …

We describe the lived experiences of a Black Woman educational leader who has studied and worked in the academy and in the field of K-12 education. This partial life history, excavated through the tenets of Critical Race Theory (CRT), illuminates the social construction of race and the pervasiveness and permanence of racism. We determined through a series of interviews that the participant's resilient resistance is guided by critical spirituality so that circumstances and people who challenge her also confront this source of power. Her lived experience, from student to faculty member, conveys the challenges and opportunities she faces and adds …

School leaders must be fully prepared to respond to all types of threats that occur. In order to respond to threats most appropriately the school needs to have a systematic approach that combines education, prevention, intervention, discipline, security and crisis preparedness measures. All threats must be assessed carefully and swiftly balancing the First Amendment rights of the student making the threat and the safety of the school. All threats are not equal but, all must be dealt with.

This study focuses on early adolescent motivation in school. It is an inquiry that seeks to understand the factors that contribute to students’ engagement in their learning through student and teacher perceptions. I examined significant research often cited as impacting motivation, including early adolescent development, middle school structures, transitions, student/teacher relationships, and parental involvement. I surveyed 345 sixth grade students on their perceptions of their own learning, thoughts, and behaviors. Participating students attended schools with various middle school age configurations, including K-8, K-12, 5-8, and 6-8. Schools represented public and charter public schools and were located in urban, suburban, and …

Parents’ Education, Occupation And Real Mother’S Age As Predictors Of Students’ Achievement In Mathematics In Some Selected Secondary Schools In Ogun State, Nigeria., K.O. Muraina, Kassim Ajayi
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal
Educational leaders are responsible for the academic success of all students. As greater numbers of students exhibit disruptive behaviors, educational leaders are challenged with the task of maintaining high academic standards while simultaneously managing problem behaviors that interrupt the learning environment. Many schools have implemented character development programs aimed to decrease student disruptive behavior by increasing student prosocial skills. Character can be defined as “the emotional, intellectual and moral qualities of a person or group as well as the demonstration of these qualities in prosocial behavior” (United States Department of Education, 2008, p.1). Character education is “an inclusive term encompassing …
Factors That Motivate And Inhibit Educators To Apply For The Principalship, William Morton
Factors That Motivate And Inhibit Educators To Apply For The Principalship, William Morton
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The national principal shortage caused by the competing factors of an aging workforce, along with recent changes to the role expectations of the principalship making the position less desirable to potential candidates have been well documented in recent years. Effective schools research shows that principals are second only to classroom teachers in having a positive impact on student achievement. Traditionally, new principals come from the ranks of current teachers. This study explores the motivating and inhibiting factors that educators consider when deciding to pursue the principalship.
A web-based survey was administered to teachers in a large school district with urban, …

Keeping True To The Cathedral Within: A Case Study Of Wheaton Academy And The Initiation, Development, And Fulfillment Of Its Christian Saga Of Social Justice, Barbara Dill-Varga
Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on a case study of Wheaton Academy, a nondenominational Christian high school in West Chicago, Illinois. This study seeks to understand, through a study of its organizational saga, how and why this antebellum academy has survived for over 157 years and to what extent it has been able to maintain its founding fathers' Christian vision of social justice. Robert Benne's framework, focused on Vision, Ethos, and People as detailed in Quality with Soul, provides a useful lens to organize the study through three phases of the life of the school's saga: initiation, development, and fulfillment.

Organizations are ever-present feature of a modern society. We look toward organization for food, education, employment, entertainment, healthcare, transportation and protection of basic rights. Nearly every aspect of modern life is influenced in one way or another by organization. Organizations are social entities that enable people to work together to achieve objectives. Job satisfaction refers to certain experiences and qualities that are related to the ways a person thinks and feels. The feeling of worthwhileness, which an individual has in particular in an occupational position, can be called job satisfaction.
Circles Of Culture And Cognition : A Sociocognitive Study Of Collaboration Within And Among Academic Groups Of Teachers In A Rural School District, Linda L. Baker
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This ethnographic case study examined the roles of district and school macro-culture and teacher sub-group micro-culture in influencing the nature and extent of teachers' professional collaboration. Informed by the sociocognitive theory that learning is rooted in social relationships and develops through interpersonal discourse and activity, the study focused on educators in a middle and high school in one small, rural district. The 41 educators who participated in the study included three administrators, 24 high school faculty members, and 17 middle school teachers. Data collection methods incorporated a general questionnaire, field notes, observations of meetings and gatherings, and extensive interviews. Most …
