Students with emotional and behavioral disabilities experience less school success than any other subgroup of students. The educational system is the only institution mandated to serve children and youth with emotional disabilities; however, for approximately 51% of these students, the educational experience ends with the decision to drop out of school. For novice teachers, an early experience with a disruptive student can end their career, while even experienced teachers may feel daunted by student behavior. For over a decade, the Rochester City School District (RCSD) has reported substandard test scores and graduation rates. In 2007, in response to negative press regarding academic achievement, Rochester Mayor Robert Duffy launched a city wide campaign designed to eradicate illiteracy in the city of Rochester. Part of Mayor Duffy’s literacy initiative involved engaging the community in this effort. In conjunction with the Mayor’s campaign, the Rochester Education Foundation (REF), a non-profit organization whose primary goal is to improve learning and success among Rochester city schoolchildren, began its Give Back, Give Books program. The purpose of this study was to determine factors that influence the readiness of frontline workers toward a nursing home’s planned organizational change. Individual levels of readiness toward change were assessed to determine if there were differences in levels of readiness and: organizational commitment, relationship with direct supervisor, and perceived organizational support. Demographic variables were also assessed to determine whether a relationship existed with change readiness. Employer-sponsored wellness programs have emerged as programs which seek to improve overall employee health and to reduce health care costs. Integrating benefit delivery and providing employee benefits can be directly correlated to the effectiveness of a wellness program, as measured by the total return on investment for shareholders (Wolff, 2008). This study was a quantitative, non-experimental, cross-sectional national survey that examined the relationship between leadership style of the nurse manager (NM) and horizontal violence (HV) and the impact of that relationship on staff nurse turnover in the emergency department. Leadership researchers and authors cite creativity as an important leadership skill. Creativity researchers and authors cite leadership skills developed as the leader internalizes cognitive, rational and semantic problem solving skills. In this study, eight faculty members at Buffalo State College who uniquely teach creativity and leadership together were interviewed regarding their opinions about how and why creativity and leadership are taught in the same program and they were invited to explore the connections between the two subjects. This quantitative study collected information to determine how elders living at the nursing home studied perceived their quality of life, determined if there are differences in quality of life among neighborhoods, and if there are differences experienced by those living in private rooms compared to shared rooms. A descriptive, correlational, and cross-sectional design was applied. An instrument that focused on enhanced quality of life, the Quality of Life Scales for Nursing Home Residents, was used to guide 155 structured interviews. A Mixed Methods Study Of Community College Students On Academic Probation: The Limiting Effect Of Academic Doublespeak, Kristine D. Duffy

A mixed methods study of students placed on academic probation at Onondaga Community College (OCC) in Syracuse, New York, revealed that voluntary participation in an intervention program yielded limited change in participants’ grades when compared to probationary students who did not participate. Only 29% of participants and nonparticipants improved their grades to return to good academic standing. Grades were compared between the program participant group and the non-participant group and a statistical analysis applying an independent sample t -test (comparing the mean GPAs), as well as an Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) (comparing the means of three groupings) resulted in no …

This qualitative study explores teachers’ and administrators’ experiences with the strategy looping in middle school settings. Whereas schools should seek to match ageappropriate, research-based strategies to the needs of students, introducing and sustaining change in public school settings is challenging. Urban communities are challenged by increasing numbers of young people dropping out of school. The small school movement's focus on personalization represents a response to social, economic, and political forces that require new approaches to educating students. Small size may nurture relationships; however, it cannot guarantee academic achievement. This exploratory quantitative study examined the predictive capacity for AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Elective (advisory) students' sense of membership, coupled with academic press, to influence academic achievement. This qualitative interview study used data from in-depth semi-structured interviews, field notes, documents. and participant demographic information sheets to understand novice urban elementary school principals' experiences with socialization into the 21 51 century principalship. The primary research question guiding this study asked what resources novice urban elementary school principals drew upon to navigate the first three years of the principalship. A research subquestion asked what influenced the participants' socialization into the principalship.
