Human existence (or be-ing) is profoundly relational. Yet educational environments often assume that learning happens individually. Though many educators are trying to rectify this problem by introducing community into the learning process, these efforts are too often simply overlaid onto a system that works through competition and rewards individual achievement. Therefore, an alternative perspective for who we are as humans and how we should be together is needed. In this dissertation, I examine what it means to be fundamentally related and show how such an understanding might impact learning. We often think of “community” as a place, but I also …

Psychological Sense Of Community And Retention: Rethinking The First-Year Experience Of Students In Stem, Melissa Dagley Falls

This investigation looks at the relationship between a STEM learning community's co-curricular activities and students' perceived sense of community (SOC)to determine which activities most influence SOC and, in turn, retention. This investigation shows that SOC can be impacted by a multitude of factors found within the college environment. The most influential of these factors are open acceptance, student academic support services, and residential experiences. Most importantly there were significant differences for African American students participating in the STEM learning community on the measures of SOC, retention, and being on-track in mathematics. La clase de español como L2: Una comunidad de práctica donde se puede promover el diálogo colaborativo sobre temas interculturales El diálogo colaborativo es una actividad que promueve la producción oral a través del compromiso activo y la participación constructiva. A partir del modelo World Café (2008), que tiene como objetivo promover el diálogo colaborativo, se pretende crear una atmósfera acogedora donde los estudiantes se puedan sentir cómodos para poder escuchar, comprender, pensar y hablar en español creativamente.
