What Information From Pisa Is Useful For Teachers? How Can Pisa Help Our Students To Become More Proficient?, Juliette Mendelovits, Dara Searle, Tom Lumley Sep 2013

What Information From Pisa Is Useful For Teachers? How Can Pisa Help Our Students To Become More Proficient?, Juliette Mendelovits, Dara Searle, Tom Lumley

Juliette Mendelovits

A frequent objection to large-scale testing programs, both national and international, is that they are used as an instrument of control, rather than as a means of providing information to effect change. Moreover, concerns about large-scale testing often take the form of objection to the specific characteristics of the assessments as being prescriptive and proscriptive, leading to a narrowing of the curriculum and the spectre of 'teaching to the test' to the exclusion of more important educational content. Taking PISA reading literacy as its focus, this paper proposes, on the contrary, that a coherent assessment system is valuable in so …

What Code-Mixed Dps Can Tell Us About Gender, Elena Valenzuela, Joyce Bruhn De Garavito, Ewelina Barski, Maria De Luna Villalón, Ana Faure, Yolanda Pangtay, Alma Ramírez Trujillo, Sonia Reis

Ewelina Barski, PhD

There has been a growing interest in the examination of the steady state of simultaneous bilinguals. An understanding of what leads to the possible weaknesses in the grammar of early bilinguals can contribute to our understanding of the possible causes of the apparent characteristic ‘failures’ in second language acquisition (Montrul 2008). Spanish has a gender feature for nouns (Carroll 1989) and gender agreement for determiners and adjectives. Problems with the acquisition of gender marking on the noun and/or with gender agreement are well-known in the L2 literature (Hawkins 1998; Fernández–Garcia 1999; Franceschina 2001; Bruhn de Garavito and White 2002; White …

Communiqué For Elders On Reconciliation, Reunification And Peace In Cyprus: An Inter-Communal Civic Initiative, Nicos Trimikliniotis Nov 2009

Communiqué For Elders On Reconciliation, Reunification And Peace In Cyprus: An Inter-Communal Civic Initiative, Nicos Trimikliniotis

Nicos Trimikliniotis

The visit of Elders in December 2009 is coinciding with a critical moment in the negotiation process, which is gradually entering into its final crucial phase. The two leaders appear determined to move forward with a settlement, despite the inherent difficulties; the Elders’ visit can assist the process by encouraging the leaders to show courage and boldness so as to press on with an agreement as soon as possible. Unlike in 2004, where both process and outcome were in the end delegitimized as ‘externally imposed’ and ‘not properly balanced’, this time the process is entirely owned and controlled by the …

Second Language Learners' Motivation And Their Perceptions Of Teachers' Motivation, Masanori Matsumoto Nov 2009

Second Language Learners' Motivation And Their Perceptions Of Teachers' Motivation, Masanori Matsumoto

Masanori Matsumoto

International students learning English as a second language in Australia were studied to find how their perception of teachers’ level of commitment to teach them English affects their own motivation to study English. A questionnaire survey was administered on the learners at three different levels of proficiency to also identify the relationship between the levels of study and the learners’ perception of teacher as a factor affecting the learners’ motivation. The results showed that there is a positive correlation between the learners’ motivation and their perception of teachers’ commitment to teach, and the intermediate level is the most problematic stage …

Konnichiwa From Australia, Masako Gavin, Masanori Matsumoto

Masanori Matsumoto

Extract:

Although many Japanese grammar books are available to Australian students, we have found that there are only a few thorough workbooks which provide communicative and written activities to reinforce grammar elements covered in class.

Konnichiwa from Australia has been prepared to supplement this need and this is volume one to four. Although primarily designed for 1st and 2nd year university students leading to Intermediate Japanese, it is also suitable for a wider scope of other learners in the community- secondary schools, Japanese courses in language schools, colleges, technical institutes and other tertiary institutions.

La Efectividad De Un Modelo Metodológico Mixto Para La Enseñanza-Aprendizaje De Español Como Le, Kerwin A. Livingstone, Anita A. Ferreira Cabrera

Kerwin A. Livingstone

Persistence In Japanese Language Study And Learners’ Cultural/Linguistics Backgrounds, Masanori Matsumoto Sep 2009

Persistence In Japanese Language Study And Learners’ Cultural/Linguistics Backgrounds, Masanori Matsumoto

Masanori Matsumoto

Motivational characteristics of students learning Japanese as a foreign language at universities in Australia were investigated to find out what affecting factors are closely related to their intentions for continuing/discontinuing their study. The results showed that students’ cultural/linguistic backgrounds have a significant impact on their performance in learning the language, and sustaining motivation, which is closely related to their interest in aspects of Japanese culture, is an important determinant for persistence in their study. Developing intrinsic cultural interest is an important factor for sustaining motivation, which is more likely to occur when learners have distant cultural/linguistic backgrounds from Japanese. Closer …

Preventing Racism, Xenophobia And Related Intolerance In Sport Across The European Union - Raxen Thematic Study On Cyprus, Nicos Trimikliniotis Sep 2009

Preventing Racism, Xenophobia And Related Intolerance In Sport Across The European Union - Raxen Thematic Study On Cyprus, Nicos Trimikliniotis

Nicos Trimikliniotis

This is a staudy on racism in sport in Cyprus, part of the the RAXEN Network.

There is no comprehensive study, nor is there any systematic system of recording racist incidents and discriminatory practices in sport in Cyprus. To collect the necessary evidence for the purposes of this report the NFP relied on various secondary sources (books, media reports). Additionally, the report draws on interviews as well as extensive information gathering from the persons interviewed (see interview list). There is however some ‘concrete’ evidence in the form of specialised body reports and sanctions against particular clubs imposed by the tribunal …

Exceptions, Soft Borders And Free Movement For Workers, Nicos Trimikliniotis Sep 2009

Exceptions, Soft Borders And Free Movement For Workers, Nicos Trimikliniotis

Nicos Trimikliniotis

This chapter deals with issues of exceptions, soft borders and free movement for workers as illustrated in the Case of Cyprus. The chapter attempts to unravel some exceptional considerations aiming to restrict free movement for workers essentially on the grounds political and economic conditions that fall outside the edges of the law. The ECJ has repeatedly ruled that the scope of exceptions, derogations, issues relating to the territorial scope of treaties as well as various public policy and security considerations restricting free movement, are severely limited by the operation of the fundamental principles of the EU acquis. On the other …

The Mirror Effect, The Law Of Attraction, And "Points Of Attraction" That Can Nurture The Evolution Of Human Consciousness, Carroy U. Ferguson

Carroy U "Cuf" Ferguson, Ph.D.

This message has several purposes. First, I want to express my immense joy that Chip Baggett and I are serving as Co-Presidents of AHP since August 16, 2009. In my view, Chip and I are long-time friends, who have a transcendent connection and synergistic energies. My desire and intent is for our co-presidency to mirror the effect(s) of synergistic collaboration as a “point of attraction” that can assist in the evolution of human consciousness across often “perceived personal and societal boundaries” (e.g., race, culture, ethnicity, class, individual and collective belief systems, and dogma). More generally, however, this message is intended …

Teaching And Learning Issues In The Multicultural Classroom, Mieke Witsel May 2009

Teaching And Learning Issues In The Multicultural Classroom, Mieke Witsel

Mieke Witsel

As the Western educational system becomes more geared to multicultural society, and a need to find funding outside the usual paddock of local students and research projects emerges, more pressure is being exerted on tertiary institutions to open their doors to foreign students. This paper explores the intercultural communication issues facing the lecturer teaching in the multicultural classroom. The original research draws on studies of Dutch lecturers and ancillary staff upon teaching (in English) within the multicultural tertiary classroom, in locations across the Netherlands, Belgium and Indonesia. However, additional findings emerged which allow for an interpretation of the impact of …
