What Information From Pisa Is Useful For Teachers? How Can Pisa Help Our Students To Become More Proficient?, Juliette Mendelovits, Dara Searle, Tom Lumley

Juliette Mendelovits

A frequent objection to large-scale testing programs, both national and international, is that they are used as an instrument of control, rather than as a means of providing information to effect change. Moreover, concerns about large-scale testing often take the form of objection to the specific characteristics of the assessments as being prescriptive and proscriptive, leading to a narrowing of the curriculum and the spectre of 'teaching to the test' to the exclusion of more important educational content. Taking PISA reading literacy as its focus, this paper proposes, on the contrary, that a coherent assessment system is valuable in so …

The Effect Of Technology Education On Student's State Standardized Test Scores, Maurice Torrez Frazier

STEMPS Theses & Dissertations

The intent of this dissertation was to determine if technology education program completers score higher on academic standards assessments than do students who do not enroll in technology education courses. Many states have developed academic standards for public school students to measure the quality of the educational system. States and local school systems adopted these standards and their accompanying tests to establish a level of academic competency for all of their students. One of the goals of technology education courses was to provide practical applications to reinforce the content of the core subject areas. The purpose of this study was …

Using The Read (Reference Effort Assessment Data) Scale© To Assess Reference Work, Maira Bundza Mar 2009

Using The Read (Reference Effort Assessment Data) Scale© To Assess Reference Work, Maira Bundza

Maira Bundza

Surveys have shown that librarians are not completely satisfied with the statistics used for reference services, so Bella Karr Gerlich at Dominican University developed the READ (Reference Effort Assessment Data) Scale, which has now been tested by 14 academic libraries. In October 2008 the Central Reference Department at Western Michigan University Libraries started using the READ Scale to record reference transactions. Instead of just writing down tick marks for each question answered, each question was rated on a six-point scale, based on the difficulty of the question and the time it took to answer. This low-tech tool was easy to …

Research Regarding The Development Of Dance Performance Measurement Instruments: A Review., Aspasia Dania, Koutsouba Maria, Hatziharistos Dimitrios, Tyrovola Vasiliki

Aspasia Dania

Despite the fact that dance programs in the public schools are housed within the physical education curricu-lum, the documents that include dance teaching instructions do not provide information regarding of processes of valid and reliable recording of student performance. Undeniably, the establishment of dance performance as-sessment instruments would give dance teachers and researchers the opportunity to share, compare and study the results of student learning and teaching methods. The purpose of the present research is the presentation of inquiring efforts with regard to the development of valid and reliable assessment instruments of movement gen-erally and specially dancing movement, as a …

Analysis Of Factors Influencing West Virginia Secondary Biology And Science Teacher Attrition Rates, Seth Perry

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The high rate of attrition for beginning teachers has been blamed on many factors. Nationally these include low pay, urban versus rural school settings, age, with younger teachers leaving sooner, and other variables making a complex problem with no clear component responsible for the loss of teachers. This study examined the self reported variables that contribute to high school teachers in West Virginia leaving their profession. An electronic survey instrument was distributed to current secondary teachers across the state. Teachers were asked to respond to questions related to professional satisfaction, perceived value from students and parents, administrative support, content versus …

The observations, opinions, and conclusions reported herein are based on committee work carried out by the author at Dongguk University during the fall semester of 2007. Members of the committee were first asked to define areas of assessment and evaluation of students that either interested them, or that they found problematic. Through methods described in this paper (journaling, committee meetings, materials sharing, observation and feedback), each team member had opportunities to actively reflect on their own practices, to both articulate and challenge …

Grading Changes After A Writing Faculty Workshop, Glenna M. Andrade, Judith Platania Jan 2009

Grading Changes After A Writing Faculty Workshop, Glenna M. Andrade, Judith Platania

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

After a workshop on student outcomes for the first-year writing course, the 28 faculty participants discussed the implications of “Development” for critical thinking. This case study of one college’s participatory exercise in improving writing found that although the RWU faculty lacked consensus on the definition, simply discussing topic of “Development” may have had the unintended effect of fewer A grades in the following semester. Unfortunately, the percentage of A grades ascended in the subsequent semesters to suggest that without reinforcement, faculty returned to grade inflation.
