The objective of this paper is to describe a problem based learning module, called the “Energy Cube”, offered by Dublin Institute of Technology that is designed to teach mechanical, building services and manufacturing engineering concepts to first year engineering students. The Energy Cube project gives students hands-on experience in areas ranging from heat transfer, lighting and energy efficiency to industrial and product design. In the Energy Cube, students design and construct (using cardboard, clear plastic, and glue) a model of a building that admits as much daylight as possible while being energy efficient and aesthetically pleasing. The Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Village combines a group living experience with resident, upper-class mentors who assist in the transition to university life. Programs for the WISE community are designed to promote academic success, foster the formation of lasting relationships with fellow students, professors and mentors, and provide out-of-classroom experiences. The College of Engineering at North Carolina State University has a strong track record in providing distance education to the citizens in North Carolina through credit-based courses and degree programs. The needs for re-adaptable presentations of supervision information are more necessary in the context-awareness environment whose environmental characteristics change frequently and the control data must be updated regularly into the Graphic User Interface (GUI), in order to provide efficiently to operators an accurate picture of the state of the system being supervised. We present an approach to designing intelligent tutoring systems, termed the Difficulty Factors Approach. In this approach, the designer investigates, at each iteration of the design cycle, which skills and concepts are difficult for students, and what factors underlie those difficulties. We show that this approach complements existing design principles, producing data that helps designers apply principles in context. We also show that by continuing to investigate student difficulties throughout the design process, it is possible to discover difficulty factors initially obscured by other difficulty factors. A lot of work & research has been done in HCI supervision-type industrial context, but mostly relative to control rooms and local supervision. However, many multi-site or extended and complex organisations are faced with some new challenges and trends such as supervisory systems integration and unified access of the different actors which have not been much considered so far. A service oriented solution is outlined and explained in the context of industrial supervision oriented towards to a unified and integrated supervisory HCI design. A representative supervisory scenario taken from a real case study which illustrates the approach is then described.
