This research investigated the “learning ecology” of the virtual world, Second Life. Study goals were to: (a) determine how the design and social dynamics of one virtual world support as well as constrain various types of learning, and (b) suggest implications for the use of virtual worlds in adult education.

This article presents the functional family therapy of James Alexander, focusing on his work with high risk youth who are high risk, delinquent, and who abuse substances. The interview addresses evidence-based interventions, indivudalizing treatment, and prevention of violence. Training efforts and recent developments in functional family therapy are discussed.

Do online students feel isolated and alone or does a sense of community and connectedness develop in online class environments? The poster presents the results of a survey that was conducted to determine if online “facelessness” blocks online students’ abilities to connect to their fellow online students and if being disconnected from their fellow students lessens their satisfaction with online courses.

Since both of my grandmothers were teachers in one-room schools and both my mother and my father attended one-room schools through the eighth grade, I grew up listening to stories about what it was like to teach and to go to school in these rural educational settings. I think it was these stories, along with the knowledge that I would be carrying on a family tradition, that largely motivated me to choose teaching as my profession. Teaching students entrepreneurial skills and the utility of cross-disciplinary teams is difficult if only classroom exercises are employed. In this program, university students worked together with commercial artists and business-persons residing in our declining downtown region to assist in the organization, planning and management of an established regional arts festival and to launch a new feature of the festival based on digital animation. Through experiential learning, students gained an appreciation for “real-life” budgets, deadlines, responsibilities and an appreciation of working on cross-disciplinary teams while the community observed first-hand the benefits of students trained in digital media, entrepreneurship and project management.

This booklet contains a documentation of the first round of Acting for the Future which uses participative drama workshops and a professional theatre performance to promote positive mental health and suicide prevention. The first round was implemented by Smashing Times Theatre Company from January to December 2005 and funded by Area Development Management and Dormant Account Fund Disbursement Board. The project is still on going. The booklet also contains a full curriculum for two drama workshop models used to promote positive mental health and suicide prevention, along with terms of reference and lists of recommended reading and support organisations. On Wednesdays, when the last period of the school day is finished, the students trickle out of room 412 of Burnham High School and the young women enter who have been waiting outside. They immediately push all the desks to the side or back walls, leaving a large open space. Then each carries a chair toward the front of the room, creating a circle. Someone closes the door, and they begin to talk with one another. Given the current diversity of communication tools at an educator's disposal, what role (if any) does the discussion forum play in the development of a strong sense of community among students? This study sought to investigate the relationship between discussion forum interaction and perceived student sense of community. The results of the study demonstrate that while mere quantity of discussion forum postings is not an indicator of community development, a significant relationship is observed when contributions are codified into the various discussion interaction types (learner -learner; learner - content; system), An implication emerging from these findings is the ability for …

Educators are examining many aspects of schools as they find ways to help students improve their performance on standardized tests in order to meet both federal and state standards. This study examined the relationship between organizational climate and student achievement on the Virginia Standards of Learning tests. A total of 1,061 teachers in 47 schools across the Commonwealth of Virginia responded to the climate survey. The survey instrument was the Organizational Health Inventory for Elementary Schools (OHI-E). This brief survey instrument examined five aspects of school climate. They were Teacher Affiliation, Collegial Leadership, Resource Influence, Institutional Integrity, and Academic Emphasis. …
