I have a passion and a bias. I am passionate about the important role of the Cooperative Extension System (CES) in civic renewal. My bias is that extension workers (also known as agents or educators) are the key to civic renewal throughout the United States. As part of the Higher Education for a New Century Conference held at the University of Southern California, we convened an invited one-day seminar for community college presidents and chancellors. The invitation list included the chancellors from Los Angeles and Orange County as well as all of the campus presidents from Los Angeles, Orange County, and San Bernardino County. Evaluation of the first year implementation of the Museums and Public schools (MAPS) initiative is reported. In so doing, this partnership will enhance teacher knowledge and skills, enrich student educational experiences and advance the educational attainment of all children in Chicago’s public schools. Despite the country's general shortage of science, mathematics and engineering (SME) professionals (Holden, 1994), undergraduate education in these fields continues to be more of a "weeding-out" than a cultivation process (Miller, 1993). It may therefore come as little surprise that these fields are predicted to remain dominated by one gender (males) and one race (White) (Grandy, 1997). Students given study skills course intervention required significantly fewer academic interventions beyond normal classroom instruction and significantly higher end-of-course averages than student who were not trained in study skills. Additionally, students trained in study skills graduated at a higher rate than students who did not receive the training.

Exploring The Impact Of Historically Black Colleges In Promoting The Development Of Undergraduates' Self-Concept, Joseph B. Berger, Jeffrey F. Milem
Joseph B. Berger
The purpose of this study was to increase understanding of how institutional context affected the development of self-concept in a sample of 273 African American college students, 67% of whom were female. The findings from this study suggest that students attending church affiliated historically Black colleges develop significantly higher self-ratings in three domains of self-concept--psychosocial wellness, academic, and achievement orientation--than do students attending similar predominantly White institutions.

The "Heeding New Voices" study, a year-long series of structured interviews with new faculty and graduate students aspiring to be faculty members around the country, sought both to give voice to those who are just beginning their academic careers and to provide guidance for the senior faculty, chairs, deans, and others in higher education responsible for shaping the professoriate of the future.
