Effectiveness Of Problem-Based Learning In Middle School Science, Alan Bandstra

Middle school science students appear to lack motivation when learning under teaching methods which reduce the subject of science to a body of facts. This study attempted to examine the effectiveness of problem-based learning as an alternative teaching method in sixth grade science. The participants were generally homogeneous representing mostly Caucasian children, and the classrooms were typical classrooms containing the normal range of abilities. Three variables were tested in a quasi-experimental pre-test/post-test control group design: attitude toward science, problem-solving ability, and knowledge. Results showed no significant effect for any of the variable as a result of the intervention. However, certain …

This project investigated literature related to the developmental concerns of middle school youth and the use of bibliotherapy. The purpose of this investigation was to gain a theoretical understanding of these developmental concerns and the related use of bibliotherapy as well as to discover instructional strategies for the use of bibliotherapy in the middle school classroom. The product of this investigation is a resource guide for the use of bibliotherapy with selected developmental concerns of middle school youth. Numerous students and reports document the fact that parental involvement in education is positively related to higher student achievement. A review of the literature also reveals that educators regard parental involvement in a variety of ways, ranging from a traditional concept of inviting parents to back-to-school night, to more participatory efforts such as parental membership on decision-making committees and executive councils. Studies also show that parental involvement relates to enhanced community satisfaction with education and to better physical facilities.
