In Virginia, the Charlottesville Volunteer Tutorial is a one-on-one tutorial program that encourages the literacy development of young children and involves a wide range of community volunteers. The program, which resulted from a partnership between the Charlottesville City Schools, the McGuffey Reading Center of the University of Virginia, and the Charlottesville community, aims to improve the reading and writing skills of at-risk children and to set up and maintain community involvement in and responsibility for the education of all children. The number of students, including graduate students, who study abroad is on the rise. Although many studies have addressed the political, financial, and organizational dimensions of studying abroad, the learning needs and
adaptation problems of individuals have received little attention. In this article, the five co-authors present their
views, based on their own experiences as foreign graduate students. Along with the findings of other research
studies, they offer recommendations for policy and practice related to graduate study by foreign students.
