Coastal marine and Great Lakes laboratories increasingly are asked to provide both advisory and educational outreach to the general (and often specific) public. To facilitate this interchange, basic and applied research must be more integrated with advisory services, with care taken to present facts and concepts, not opinions or advocacy. Moreover, outreach efforts should be proactive, not reactive. With the rapid expansion of telecommunications, such as electronic mail and teleconferencing, outreach can optimize the links between education and research. Public outreach also gives graduate students an opportunity to utilize practical applications and interpretations of marine science, thus providing valuable experience …

The purpose of this study was to examine how full-time female college administrators juggle the responsibilities in their professional lives with those of their nonprofessional lives.;A total of thirty female administrators were selected from both private and public four-year institutions in eastern Virginia. Snowball sampling was used to identify the women who met the criteria of the study. The women were all full-time college administrators who had at least one child still living at home and at least one living parent. They were all members of the "sandwich generation". This study analyzed the impact the Upward Bound program at Virginia Union University had on students' freshman year performance. The population selected for the study were those students who participated in Virginia Union University's Upward Bound program during the academic years 1984-85 through 1993-94 and entered Virginia Union University after completing the program.;The Upward Bound participants were compared to a comparable control group of non-Upward Bound students. The purpose of this study was to investigate the accuracy of a particular model for collaboration when applied to a successful school-university partnership. A specific framework for establishing and maintaining successful school-university partnerships, proposed by Frank Wilbur of Syracuse University, was identified in the literature. Wilbur's model was selected as the conceptual framework for this study since it contains critical elements supported by at least four other researchers studying and writing on collaborative endeavors and was, in fact, the most comprehensive of any of the suggested conceptual frameworks. A steady rise in the number of nontraditional students combined with high attrition has raised questions about whether postsecondary institutions have been effective in creating environments that facilitate adult student success. This concern led to the current study which investigates whether adult undergraduate perceptions of environmental support and responsiveness to student needs affects persistence patterns.;Tinto's (1993) Academic and Social Integration Model and Schlossberg, Lynch, and Chickerings' (1989) ecological perspective have guided this study. Full-time community college faculty moonlight to a much greater extent than does the general workforce. The number of faculty who work second jobs outside of their full-time teaching contract can be projected to exceed 40 percent with a strong possibility that more than half have employment outside of their primary faculty jobs. The purpose of this case study was to examine the degree to which those managing change for a distance learning initiative followed David Nadler's (1989) four action steps designed to reduce resistance in making the transition from the former operational state to a newly-created state.;The four action steps include providing opportunities for participation among employees, allowing employees to identify current operations that will not work in the new organizational state, rewarding behavior that assists in the transition, and allowing sufficient time for the change to take place.
