Development, Progress, And Accomplishments Of Institutional Assessment At Western Washington University 1990 To 1996, Joseph E. Trimble, Gary (Gary Russell) Mckinney, Richard Frye, Carl Simpson

Office of Institutional Effectiveness

Report 1996-02: Development, Progress, and Accomplishments of Institutional Assessment at Western Washington University-1990 to 1996 The fall of 1996 marked six years of assessment efforts at Western. In December, 1996, the Office of Institutional Assessment and Testing produced a six-year retrospective of its work. The original purpose of the Washington State's assessment movement was to improve the quality of programs and provide performance accountability. These basic tenets have changed little in six years. Moreover, assessment did not just begin at Western in 1990. Before the statewide mandate for assessment, Western was already carrying out assessment activities: for instance, end-of-program assessment …

Klipsun Magazine, 1996, Volume 27, Issue 01 - December, Collin Coyne

Klipsun Magazine

The cover of Klipsun magazine has a legacy including but not limited to cartoon characters, school administrators, clowns, cars, peculiar folks and tulips. This issue, it seems our subject matter has taken a serious turn. Ann Yow, our photo advisor, best summed it up after she saw the image of illegal activity emblazoned on our computer screen.

Trying to breathe evenly she said, “This isn’t tulips.”

Klipsun is your campus magazine. It isn’t about tulips or heroin. It’s about you.

The editors of this quarter’s Klipsun struggled with the decision to use the arresting cover photo. We feel that hard-to-swallow …

The Graduation Efficiency Index: An Alternative Measure Of Time-To Degree Progress, Gary (Gary Russell) Mckinney, Joseph E. Trimble, Jacqueline M. Andrieu-Parker

Western has an access problem. While more students than ever want to come to Western, more students than ever are having to be turned away. There simply isn't the space. Fueled by the University's continued emphasis on academic excellence, regular placement among regional "best" in national publications, and the population influx known as the baby boom echo, Western has been inundated with the state's college-bound population. The Washington State Legislature, the Higher Education Coordinating Board, the Office of Financial Management-these bodies plus average citizens are hopeful that Western can address the access issue and let more students in. One solution …

Student Demand For Enhanced Recreational Facilities, Carl Simpson, Linda D. (Linda Darlene) Clark, Gary (Gary Russell) Mckinney

Office of Institutional Effectiveness

Western's recreational facilities, espe¬cially indoor facilities, fall notably short of those of the other regional universities and of that which is typical of well-funded private universities. On the other hand,"Western students have selected to attend Western, we know them to be very active in intramurals, and they express extremely high satisfaction with Western and with Western/Bellingham as a place to live. That is, we have reason to expect both that students may be satisfied and that they may be dissatisfied with the current recreational facilities at Western. The purpose of this survey is to bring evidence to bear on those …

Making "Connections" And Shifting The Educational Paradigm: One School's Struggle To Empower Students Through Transforming The Educational Process, Brad (Bradley) Lewis Oct 1996

Making "Connections" And Shifting The Educational Paradigm: One School's Struggle To Empower Students Through Transforming The Educational Process, Brad (Bradley) Lewis

WWU Honors College Senior Projects

According to Elliot W. Eisner of Stanford University, education reform efforts for American schools have not exactly been ”a novel enterprise." In the late 1950s, the Space Race pressured Congress to turn to American education to help regain and maintain our technological superiority. The result was the curriculum reform movement of the 1960s. In the 1970s "accountability" became the central focus of reformers. Then, in April of 1983, A Nation at Risk was published only to give way, by the close of that century, to America 2000, the reform agenda of the Bush Administration, which aimed to do what all …

Klipsun Magazine, 1996, Volume 26, Issue 06 - September, Stephanie Thomson

Klipsun Magazine

n the past few years, Klipsun has offered issues with assorted themes, such as politics, consumerism, women’s issues and relationships. When the other editors and I sat down to select which articles we wanted to run in this issue, we realized three stories shared a common theme — they all related to the performing arts.

Jeremy Stiles gives us a sample of an ordinary open mic night at a downtown Bellingham bar, where performers with visions of stardom come together with performers who don’t have the same aspirations but do share a love for music.

Wendy Gross spent time at …

Student Demand For Extended Library Hours, Carl Simpson, Linda D. (Linda Darlene) Clark, Gary (Gary Russell) Mckinney

Office of Institutional Effectiveness

The goal of this brief issue of Focus is.to report our findings concerning the relative student demand for various possible extensions of library hours. Western's libraries have received requests and suggestions concerning the extension of library hours. The need to balance service to Western students against the cost of extending Wilson Library's operating hours called for additional information. At the request of the Acting Director of Libraries, Marian Alexander, the Office of Institutional Assessment and Testing and the Office of Survey Research undertook a brief survey to examine the likely value to students of various possible additions to library hours. …

National College Health Risk Behavior Survey Of Western Washington University Students, Spring, 1995, Gary (Gary Russell) Mckinney, Patricia M. Fabiano, Joseph E. Trimble

Office of Institutional Effectiveness

In May, 1995, the National College Health Risk Behavior Survey-developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)-was mailed to 1,000 randomly selected Western Washington University students. The final tally of completed forms was 482, a 48.2% survey response rate. The National College Health Risk Behavior Survey was established by the CDC to monitor the prevalence of behaviors most influencing the health of college students. In addition to Western students, the survey was administered to over 10,000 representative college students nationwide. (Baseline data from that administration was not available at the time of the publication of this report). The …

Klipsun Magazine, 1996, Volume 26, Issue 05 - June, Stephanie Thomson

Klipsun Magazine

Articles that feature ordinary people living extraordinary lives are some of my favorite to read, and two stories in this issue of Klipsun illustrate this theme. The people in these stories are admirable not because they have fame or power or money, but because they have been confronted with countless horrors and tragedies, and their ability to keep everything in perspective remains. Their experiences reiterate a valuable lesson: The power of the human spirit to overcome adversity cannot be underestimated.

Our center spread profiles a local woman who is a mother, a grand mother, a retired teacher — and a …

The 1995 Senior Survey: A Longitudinal Study Of 1991 Freshmen, Gary (Gary Russell) Mckinney, Joseph E. Trimble

Office of Institutional Effectiveness

During the spring, 1995, Western students who had taken the fall, 1991, Freshman Survey (technically, the Cooperative Institutional Research Program Student Information Survey) were sent a follow-up questionnaire, the College Student Survey (CSS)--referred to in this report as the Senior Survey. (As with the CIRP Survey, the CSS instrument was developed by the Higher Education Research Institute. a part of the Graduate School of Education at the University of California, Los Angeles.) The Senior Survey was designed both to parallel the Freshman Survey, and to supply elemental information on college students after they have attended an institution of higher education …

Faculty Judgments Concerning Expanding Western Washington University's Summer Session, Linda D. (Linda Darlene) Clark, Joseph E. Trimble, Gary (Gary Russell) Mckinney, Carl Simpson May 1996

Faculty Judgments Concerning Expanding Western Washington University's Summer Session, Linda D. (Linda Darlene) Clark, Joseph E. Trimble, Gary (Gary Russell) Mckinney, Carl Simpson

Office of Institutional Effectiveness

During the Winter quarter, 1996, nearly three-quarters of the faculty (70.4%) responded to a questionnaire concerning the advisability of expanding the WWU Summer Session to constitute "year-round" operation. Generally, the faculty supports the idea, although only if the program is high-quality and fully supported, if the program operates with few temporary Summer-only faculty, and if pay for Summer Session increases. Most faculty, 71.7%, say Western "definitely" or "probably" should pursue an enlarged Summer Session, while only 16.4% oppose such a move. Support for expanding Summer Session is, however, limited by two concerns. First, only about 45% of academic year faculty …

Student Demand For An Expanded Summer Session, Carl Simpson, Linda D. (Linda Darlene) Clark, Gary (Gary Russell) Mckinney, Joseph E. Trimble

Office of Institutional Effectiveness

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: During Winter quarter, 1996, students responded to a questionnaire concerning the expansion of Western's Summer Session to "year-round operation." They were asked how likely they were to attend Summer Session in 1996, and then how likely they would have been to attend if Western had an expanded Summer Session in place for 1996. Survey findings indicated that expanding to year-round operation would significantly increase the size of enrollments during the Summer, though Summer would remain substantially smaller than during the academic year. The increase in student demand was estimated at 1315 students, a 51% increase in Summer Session …

Klipsun Magazine, 1996, Volume 26, Issue 04 - April, Kristi Kiteley

Klipsun Magazine

During the last production of Klipsun, one of our editors brought in what was then the newest issue of Rolling Stone. To say the least, we were disappointed. We weren’t shocked that Jennifer Aniston was featured nude on the cover. We weren’t shocked that Rolling Stone would use sex appeal to draw in readers. We all were, however, disappointed in Rolling Stone's blatant portrayal of women as sex objects. This time it was just too obvious and too extreme.

We discussed the trend of Rolling Stone placing scantily-clad women on the front cover, while showing men in T-shirts …

A Quarter In Lynden’S Esl 40: Process And Product, Justin T. (Justin Taylor) Maggart

WWU Honors College Senior Projects

As is indicated in the title, the hard copy of my Senior Project breaks down into two parts: process and product. The 'process' is represented by my Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) Practicum Journal. This journal reflects the thoughts and feelings that I experienced during my first longterm exposure to an ESL setting. The Journal is by no means formal; instead of deciding on a particular format for my entries, I let them form themselves. I chose to approach the journal in this way so that my reflections could be seen in the clearest light, without the interference …
