Between the end of August and November, 1996, the Western Washington University Office of Survey Research conducted a survey of school principals and superintendents' offices in the Olympic ESD. The survey was initiated by Western Washington University Extended Programs with the goal of exploring the kinds of inservice training needed by science teachers in the Olympic ESD.

Report 1996-02: Development, Progress, and Accomplishments of Institutional Assessment at Western Washington University-1990 to 1996 The fall of 1996 marked six years of assessment efforts at Western. In December, 1996, the Office of Institutional Assessment and Testing produced a six-year retrospective of its work. The original purpose of the Washington State's assessment movement was to improve the quality of programs and provide performance accountability. These basic tenets have changed little in six years. Moreover, assessment did not just begin at Western in 1990. This report is about student-workers. The youthful part-time workers encountered in supermarket delicatessens, hot bread shops and fast food stores throughout Australia in the 1990s are very likely to also be full-time secondary school students. Over the past two to three decades, the increasing number of students who combine study at school with part-time employment outside of school hours has been widely observed, although estimates of how many school students have jobs vary greatly. Furthermore, while the trend has been well recognised, its implications have frequently been overlooked. Consideration of the student-worker phenomenon gives rise to a number of questions …

Western has an access problem. While more students than ever want to come to Western, more students than ever are having to be turned away. There simply isn't the space. Fueled by the University's continued emphasis on academic excellence, regular placement among regional "best" in national publications, and the population influx known as the baby boom echo, Western has been inundated with the state's college-bound population. The Washington State Legislature, the Higher Education Coordinating Board, the Office of Financial Management-these bodies plus average citizens are hopeful that Western can address the access issue and let more students in. Western's recreational facilities, espe¬cially indoor facilities, fall notably short of those of the other regional universities and of that which is typical of well-funded private universities. On the other hand,"Western students have selected to attend Western, we know them to be very active in intramurals, and they express extremely high satisfaction with Western and with Western/Bellingham as a place to live. That is, we have reason to expect both that students may be satisfied and that they may be dissatisfied with the current recreational facilities at Western. The goal of this brief issue of Focus is.to report our findings concerning the relative student demand for various possible extensions of library hours. Western's libraries have received requests and suggestions concerning the extension of library hours. The need to balance service to Western students against the cost of extending Wilson Library's operating hours called for additional information. At the request of the Acting Director of Libraries, Marian Alexander, the Office of Institutional Assessment and Testing and the Office of Survey Research undertook a brief survey to examine the likely value to students of various possible additions to library hours. …

To help examine the recent downturn in school completion rates in Australia this report makes use of two sources of data. The first is from the Schools Australia series published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). The figures provided by this series are compiled from enrolment information collected from schools by individual state and territory departments of education as well as by the Commonwealth Department of Employment, Education, Training and Youth Affairs. The figures provide aggregate information on school retention and participation by state and school system. The second set of data is from the Australian Youth Survey which …

In May, 1995, the National College Health Risk Behavior Survey-developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)-was mailed to 1,000 randomly selected Western Washington University students. The final tally of completed forms was 482, a 48.2% survey response rate. The National College Health Risk Behavior Survey was established by the CDC to monitor the prevalence of behaviors most influencing the health of college students. In addition to Western students, the survey was administered to over 10,000 representative college students nationwide. (Baseline data from that administration was not available at the time of the publication of this report). The …

The purpose of this study was to examine how undergraduate students interpret the items on a faculty evaluation instrument. Most research on faculty evaluation is quantitative (Marsh and Bailey 1993). Our first study was also quantitative. After we produced a profile of quantitative ratings of faculty by students across all departments in our university in an earlier study, we wanted to go beneath the numbers to their meaning. We designed the present qualitative study to investigate what the items on that form meant to students.

This thesis concerns how changes in the assessment of writing mirror the historical changes in the purposes and methodologies in education. We have witnessed a dramatic shift from the viewing and testing of writing as a series of sub-skills, with emphasis on error-avoidance and correctness of form, to viewing both the process of writing and its assessment as a means of discovery, reflection, and learning. New practices in the evaluation of writing reflect knowledge of how writing occurs and how it is taught. During the spring, 1995, Western students who had taken the fall, 1991, Freshman Survey (technically, the Cooperative Institutional Research Program Student Information Survey) were sent a follow-up questionnaire, the College Student Survey (CSS)--referred to in this report as the Senior Survey. (As with the CIRP Survey, the CSS instrument was developed by the Higher Education Research Institute. a part of the Graduate School of Education at the University of California, Los Angeles.) During the Winter quarter, 1996, nearly three-quarters of the faculty (70.4%) responded to a questionnaire concerning the advisability of expanding the WWU Summer Session to constitute "year-round" operation. Generally, the faculty supports the idea, although only if the program is high-quality and fully supported, if the program operates with few temporary Summer-only faculty, and if pay for Summer Session increases. Most faculty, 71.7%, say Western "definitely" or "probably" should pursue an enlarged Summer Session, while only 16.4% oppose such a move. Support for expanding Summer Session is, however, limited by two concerns. First, only about 45% of academic year faculty …

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: During Winter quarter, 1996, students responded to a questionnaire concerning the expansion of Western's Summer Session to "year-round operation." They were asked how likely they were to attend Summer Session in 1996, and then how likely they would have been to attend if Western had an expanded Summer Session in place for 1996. Survey findings indicated that expanding to year-round operation would significantly increase the size of enrollments during the Summer, though Summer would remain substantially smaller than during the academic year. The increase in student demand was estimated at 1315 students, a 51% increase in Summer Session …
