Students Who Are The First Generation Of Their Family To Attend College: A Comparative Study Of Western Washington University Frosh, Sarah Dittman, Gary (Gary Russell) Mckinney, Joseph E. Trimble

Executive Summary: Information for this report was obtained from a study conducted to determine the relative level of adjustment to college of first-generation and second-generation freshmen at Western Washington University. The study utilized the Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire (SACQ), a 67 item self-report adjustment measure. The SACQ is composed of a full-scale and four subscales: academic adjustment, social adjustment, personal-emotional adjustment, and attachment to the school the student is attending. The SACQ was administered to a randomly selected sample of 250 first and second- generation freshman students. Executive Summary: Since 1971, Western Washington University has utilized the Cooperative Institutional Research Program (CIRP) Student Information Survey to profile the characteristics, attitudes, values, educational achievements, and future goals of its in-coming freshmen. Participants in the 1989 CIRP are the focus of this report. During Spring Quarter, 1993, the OIAT sent 482 current students who had taken the CIRP survey in the Fall Quarter, 1989, College Student Surveys (CSS). In February 1994, the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA) was featured in USA Weekend and on NBC-TV's Dateline in reports on gender equity in education. The reports centered on the work of David and Myra Sadker, professors of education at American University. The Sadkers' new book, Failing at Fairness: How America's Schools Cheat Girls, was published in February

The February 4-6 USA Weekend, the nationwide weekend newspaper insert, cited IMSA in a cover story by the Sadkers. Three IMSA students were pictured on the cover. The Dateline report by anchorwoman Jane Pauley aired February 8.
