American students graduate with diplomas and degrees that presume mastery of the disciplines they study. But mounting evidence suggests that these students also graduate with thinking characterized by stereotypes, misconceptions, unexamined assumptions, and rigidly applied algorithms. Although most students can demonstrate an ability to complete assignments and pass examinations in the content, vocabulary, and methodology of the disciplines, they fail to achieve genuine understanding. Such understanding enables individuals to apply knowledge, skills, and dispositions to new situations and to acquire and assess new information and ideas.

1991-92 Annual Report, Illinois' Investment, Illinois Mathematics And Science Academy

Annual Reports

On behalf of the board of trustees, faculty, staff, students, parents and alumni of this pioneering educational community, it is our privilege to share with you the sixth annual report of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy. The 1991-92 year was indeed a remarkable one for the Academy; we are pleased to report some of the highlights.

2: "The Mapping Of Chromosome 16", Norman A. Doggett, Raymond L. Stallings, Carl E. Hildebrand, Robert K. Moyzis

Genomics: Past & Future

Human chromosome 16 is the main focus of the mapping efforts at Los Alamos. The large photomicrograph on these opening pages illustrates the starting point for those mapping efforts, the evaluation of our chromosome-16-specific library of cloned fragments. Among the 23 pairs of human chromosomes, one pair, chromosome 16, is identified by fluorescence in-situ hybridization. Thousands of yellow fluorescent probes derived from the clone library have hybridized to both copies of chromosome 16. The high density and uniform coverage of the fluorescent signals were a strong indication that we could use the library to construct a map of overlapping cloned …

IMSA Fund Reports

As president of the IMSA Fund board of directors, it is my privilege to share with you, our shareholders, a copy of the 1991-92 annual report of the IMSA Fund for Advancement of Education.

This has been a record year for the IMSA Fund—an achievement all the more noteworthy in light of the recessionary economy and uncertain futures for many corporations and individuals. In a time when many people are having to make difficult choices, we are grateful you chose IMSA as a sound investment in the future.

The IMSA Fund raised nearly $1 million in 1991-92. The $963,245 total …

Imsa 1992-93 Profile, Office Of College And Academic Counseling

IMSA Profile

"IMSA stands as an example that excellence truly is possible. The combination of outstanding students, innovative curriculum and dedicated faculty ensures that many IMSA graduates will become leaders not only in science and technology but also in other fields. That is important because we need people in all walks of life who are comfortable with science - people who can evaluate evidence and make sensible judgments whether in a laboratory or elsewhere." Dr. Frank Press, President, National Academy of Sciences*
