Restructuring For Mathematical Power: Techniques For Teaching Thinking In Algebra, Barbara D. Nelson Dec 1992

Restructuring For Mathematical Power: Techniques For Teaching Thinking In Algebra, Barbara D. Nelson

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

Recent critiques of mathematics education have resulted in proposals to restructure learning and teaching for mathematical power. The new vision pictures the classroom as a community of learners where mathematics come alive as a useful tool in our technological society. However, many high school mathematics teachers are struggling to understand and implement the fundamental instructional change inherent in the vision. Written from the perspective of a high school teacher for experienced high school mathematics teachers, this thesis attempts to bridge vision and practice. To clarify the vision, current literature on reform in mathematics education is synthesized into a framework of …

"Who Is A Scientist?": Effects Of An Intervention To Change Students' Ideas About Science And Scientists, Lauren A. Foley

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

Advocates for improving science literacy have focused much attention on the negative impressions about science and scientists held by many Americans. The image of scientists as 'nerdy' bespectacled men in laboratories has been related by some researchers to people's lack of interest in pursuing science. This thesis analyzes one component of a program aimed at changing that stereotype. The Science-By-Mail (tm) program at the Museum of Science in Boston was designed to give students a more inclusive image of scientists. Central to the program was the creation of pen-pal relationships between students in grades 4-9 with scientists who did not …

Science Education And The External Perspective On Science, William W. Cobern May 1992

Science Education And The External Perspective On Science, William W. Cobern

Scientific Literacy and Cultural Studies Project

In Kuhnian terms, science education has been a process of inducting students into the reigning paradigms of science. While it may never have been explicit, the goals of science education clearly have been to persuade students that science provides a fairly constant, highly justified, and sufficient understanding of physical phenomena. In 1984, Duschl noted that science education had not kept pace with developments in the history and philosophy of science. Positivism was dethroned years ago and it turns out that factors surrounding discovery are at least as important as the justification of knowledge. Indeed, the entire concept of justification has …

A Thematic Unit For Integrating Social Studies And Science In The First Grade, Lin Marjorie Lasater Jan 1992

A Thematic Unit For Integrating Social Studies And Science In The First Grade, Lin Marjorie Lasater

All Graduate Projects

A thematic unit for integrating social studies and science with other curriculum areas was developed for first grade students. The theme for the unit centered around farms. The unit was divided into five subunits: farms, farm animals, orchards/vineyards (to include fruits of the Yakima Valley and apples), crops (to include vegetables of the Yakima Valley, pumpkins, and wheat), and nutrition/four food groups. The literature was reviewed to establish a theoretical foundation for the unit and for activities that focused on reading, writing, and language development.

Thematic Approach To Teaching Science In Kindergarten For Use With First And Second Language Students, Gerene Marie Sadberry Jan 1992

Thematic Approach To Teaching Science In Kindergarten For Use With First And Second Language Students, Gerene Marie Sadberry

All Graduate Projects

Thematic Science units were established for the Wapato kindergarten in both Spanish and English. Approximately three hundred students are participants in the program for which this curriculum was designed. This study suggests how selected science objectives may be implemented using the thematic approach. Each theme contains a media resource list of Items available from the Wapato Primary Media Center and suggested activities which will help to integrate the science unit with other subject areas. The Intent of the curriculum design ls that children learn language and science naturally when they are developed in a meaningful context.

Annual Reports

On behalf of the board of trustees, faculty, staff, students, parents and alumni of this pioneering educational community, it is our privilege to share with you the sixth annual report of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy. The 1991-92 year was indeed a remarkable one for the Academy; we are pleased to report some of the highlights.

Externally, programs for other school systems, teachers and students in Illinois continued to expand. IMSA's impact on the state included helping 23 Illinois school districts restructure their mathematics and science programs, awarding teachers IMPACT II grants to exchange innovative classroom programs, and sponsoring …

2: "The Mapping Of Chromosome 16", Norman A. Doggett, Raymond L. Stallings, Carl E. Hildebrand, Robert K. Moyzis

Genomics: Past & Future

Human chromosome 16 is the main focus of the mapping efforts at Los Alamos. The large photomicrograph on these opening pages illustrates the starting point for those mapping efforts, the evaluation of our chromosome-16-specific library of cloned fragments. Among the 23 pairs of human chromosomes, one pair, chromosome 16, is identified by fluorescence in-situ hybridization. Thousands of yellow fluorescent probes derived from the clone library have hybridized to both copies of chromosome 16. The high density and uniform coverage of the fluorescent signals were a strong indication that we could use the library to construct a map of overlapping cloned …

Different Perspectives On The Natural World: Biology Professors And Their Students, William W. Cobern Jan 1992

Different Perspectives On The Natural World: Biology Professors And Their Students, William W. Cobern

Scientific Literacy and Cultural Studies Project

The science classroom is the location of complex interactions between students, teacher, curriculum, and environment. These interactions can lead to conflict where the various factors pertaining to students, teacher, curriculum, and environment are at odds. Interest in these types of conflicts has led to numerous studies of classroom processes including those concerned with gender, ethnicity, religion, and language (e.g., Fraser, 1989). Worldview is a factor of more recent interest to researchers and is at an early stage of methodological development and nascent investigation (Cobern, 1991c). Pertaining to the classroom, worldview research focuses on the fundamental beliefs held by teachers and …

Chaos And Order, Mystery And Knowledge, The Beautiful And Mundane: College Student Conceptualizations Of Nature, William W. Cobern Jan 1992

Chaos And Order, Mystery And Knowledge, The Beautiful And Mundane: College Student Conceptualizations Of Nature, William W. Cobern

Scientific Literacy and Cultural Studies Project

What do students believe about the world around them? Hawkins (1983) suggested that young students can have a difficult time understanding heliocentrism because their personal experience is literally geocentric. What this illustrates is that meaningful learning in the science classroom presupposes students who enter with beliefs about the world compatible with science as it is taught in the classroom. The study of student beliefs (or for that matter, teacher beliefs) at fundamental levels is the study of worldview (Cobern, 1991a). The research reported here was an interpretive study of beliefs about nature, a delimitation of worldview, held by women college …

Teaching The Logic Of Falsification: A Classroom Excercise, David Lopatto Jan 1992

Teaching The Logic Of Falsification: A Classroom Excercise, David Lopatto

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Every science teacher soon discovers that the intuitions students use to solve problems are frequently at variance with the critical thinking skills required by science. 1be exercise presented here focuses on the value of making scientific hypotheses and then attempting to falsify rather than confirm them. When challenged to test a hypothesis, intuitive thinkers tend to show a confirmation bias, i.e., they will propose a test in which the results will be a positive instance of the hypothesis (Einhorn and Hogarth, 1978; Wason, 1960). Scientists, on the other hand, know that tests are specific instances that cannot inductively ''prove" the …

Adding Fizz To Your Science Classroom, Andrea L. Skrukrud, Angela B. Sharpe, Wendy M. Stevens Jan 1992

Adding Fizz To Your Science Classroom, Andrea L. Skrukrud, Angela B. Sharpe, Wendy M. Stevens

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Have you found that your science classes just skip from unit to unit? Do you want to get away from science lessons that stress vocabulary and memorization of facts? Are you pondering how to get your students more involved in science? These were some of the questions we thought about when we designed hands-on experiences in science for upper elementary students. According to the National Research Council in Fulfilling the Promise, Biology Education in the Nation's Schools, future curriculum goals for both elementary and secondary science teaching will emphasize hands-on exploration by the students, the development of skills in observation, …
